Bible Ballistics: BBs #769   Christmas Ponderings!!! #4

Why Christmas?  Why do we really get excited about Christmas?  Why do other get depressed, or sad, or just feel that there is no hope?  Partly, I think, because we are human creatures of emotions, fears and hopes, and we choose each day, sometimes moment by moment how we will walk in this world; we decide if we will choose to believer and receive the hope that is in this great story of the love of God!  While others may fail us, they may disappoint our greatest expectations, or the loss of ones held dear drains us of the desire to press on—I’m here to remind us all, myself included, that God is still ruling today—whether we choose to recognize it or not.  And Jesus IS the greatest gift ever given to mankind!

“And I heard as it were

the voice of a great multitude,

and as the voice of many waters,

and as the voice of mighty thunderings,

saying,

Alleluia:

for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”   Revelation 19:6

And HE was reigning when Jesus willingly took on the form of a human in Mary’s womb—yes, Jesus was incarnate God in her womb—all for you and me.  And He’s still calling people to Himself.

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock:

if any man hear my voice,

and open the door,

I will come in to him,

and will sup with him,

and he with me.”   Revelation 3:20

It’s why HE came—“save His people from their sins” (see Matthew 1:21)—it’s why HE still delays HIS return.

“For

God

so loved

the world,

that he gave

his only begotten Son,

 that whosoever believeth

in him

should not perish,

but have everlasting life.

17 For God

sent not his Son

into the world

to condemn the world;

but that the world

through him

might be saved.

18 He that believeth

on him

is not condemned:

but he that believeth

not

is condemned already,

because he hath

not

believed in the name

of the only begotten

Son of God.”   John 3:16-18

The choice has been given to every person, and refusing to choose, is choosing; even while God is calling to you today, because HE loves you and wants you to come to HIM in repentance and faith and find the abundant life that Jesus can and will give to HIS own.  He wants YOU!

“The Lord is not slack

concerning his promise,

as some men count slackness;

but is longsuffering

to us-ward,

not willing that any should perish,

but that all

should come to repentance.”  2 Peter 3:9

Oh, how I sit here amazed that God could love me that much—me, a sinner who couldn’t save herself, any more than you can, but HE reached down some 45+ years ago and called me to Himself and made me face my sin—not my supposed goodness that I had done!  Oh, how I praise HIM for HIS truly amazing GRACE to reach down to an angry, selfish, disobedient child (woman) and save my soul, and set my feet on a new path.  And, no, I didn’t get it all right after that, but all that I have done (both good and bad), HE has taken and used it to grow me more into the likeness of Jesus and allowed me to help others see Jesus.  If you don’t know HIM today, I invite you to reach out to Jesus—He is truly knocking at your door right now.  Don’t turn HIM away?

“Forasmuch then

as the children

are partakers of flesh and blood,

he also himself

likewise took part of the same;

that through death

he might destroy him

that had the power of death,

that is,

the devil;

15 And deliver them

who through fear of death

were all their lifetime

subject to bondage.

16 For verily he took

not on him

the nature of angels;

but he took

on him

the seed of Abraham.

17 Wherefore in all things

it behoved him

to be made like unto his brethren,

that he might be

a merciful

and faithful

 high priest

in things pertaining to God,

to make reconciliation

for the sins of the people.

18 For in that he himself

hath suffered being tempted,

he is able to succour

them that are tempted.”  Hebrews 2:14-18

“For we have not

an high priest

which cannot be touched

with the feeling of our infirmities;

but was in all points tempted

like as we are,

yet without sin.

16 Let us therefore come boldly

unto the throne of grace,

that we may obtain mercy,

and find grace to help

in time of need.”  Hebrews 4:15-16

And one last thought in closing for today:

“Pilate therefore said unto him,

Art thou a king then?

Jesus answered,

Thou sayest that I am a king.

To this end was I born,

and for this cause

came I into the world,

that I should bear witness

unto the truth.

Every one that is of the truth

heareth my voice.”  John 18:37

WHO “is of the truth”?  Only those who have come to God through Jesus Christ, The SON!!!

“Jesus saith unto him,

I am

the way,

the truth,

and the life:

no man

cometh unto the Father,

but by me.”  John 14:6

Won’t you open your ears and your heart today!!!  Remember, that baby didn’t stay in the manger, HE went to Calvary for you and me:

“Behold,

I stand

at the door,

and knock:

if any man hear my voice,

and open the door,

I will come in to him,

and will sup with him,

and he with me.”

Amen and Amen!!!

Bible Ballistics: Vol. 18 No. 06   Christmas Ponderings #3???

As we looked earlier at Joseph, the earthly father to Jesus, a builder—the carpenter–, we find that while Joseph was a builder of various objects for life in has day, objects that might last a lifetime, some longer, some not so long; but Jesus built a bridge with HIS life, death and resurrection—a bridge that delivers us from sin, death and hell and opens the way into God’s presence.  This babe who was born in a barn and put to bed in a manger (a feeding trough), visited by shepherds and wisemen became the means of salvation for all who will believe in HIS substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for salvation!

“Therefore being justified by faith,

we have peace with God

through our Lord Jesus Christ:

2 By whom also we have access by faith

into this grace

wherein we stand,

and rejoice

in hope of the glory of God.

3 And not only so,

but we glory in tribulations also:

knowing that tribulation

worketh patience;

4 And patience,

experience;

and experience,

hope:

5 And hope maketh not ashamed;

because the love of God

is shed abroad in our hearts

by the Holy Ghost

which is given unto us.

6 For when we were yet without strength,

in due time Christ died

for the ungodly.”  Romans 5:1-6

We receive the “Holy Ghost” (or Holy Spirit) of God, the Spirit that HE shared with Adam and Eve before sin—the part of them that died because of sin—the part that Jesus restored at Calvary—for you and me:

“…the blood of Jesus Christ his Son

cleanseth us

from all sin…”.   1 John 1:7b

One of the things that amazes me, is that God had this plan in place before HE created us; HE knew we would fail, that Adam would sin, and yet HE “so loved the world”—you and me, every sinner ever born (and the two who were directly created by God’s own hand!)—that HE had already provided for our redemption (to buy us back) from this sin of ours, and the death and hell that it leads to if unchecked by the blood of Jesus.  Why would I say this?  Because God said it in HIS Word by more than one author, and as we prepare to celebrate (or like me just plain celebrate Jesus every day!) Jesus’ birth, we need to understand that HE wasn’t ‘plan B’—HE was always the exact plan!  Let’s consider some scriptures to see what we find.

“In the beginning

God created

the heaven and the earth.”  Genesis 1:1

“And I will put enmity

between thee and the woman,

and between thy seed and her seed;

it shall bruise thy head,

and thou shalt bruise his heel.”  Genesis 3:15

“And from Jesus Christ,

who is the faithful witness,

and the first begotten of the dead,

and the prince of the kings of the earth.

 Unto him that loved us,

and washed us from our sins

in his own blood,”  Revelation 1:5

Just as God “created” all things, (and remember the reference to “beginning”, means “our” beginning NOT God’s) HE knew that we would fail—that we would sin—yet HE had already prepared a plan to ‘buy us back out of sin, death and hell’, oh, praise HIS dear name.  Do you know Jesus?  Have you come in repentance and faith to the cross where HIS precious blood was spilled out for you and me?  This precious Lamb of God who, as John the Baptizer declared:

“Behold the Lamb of God,

which taketh away

the sin of the world.”  John 1:29b

And when was this plan established?  Not when we sinned, but before “the foundation of the world”!

“And it shall come to pass,

that whosoever shall call

on the name of the Lord

shall be saved.

22 Ye men of Israel,

hear these words;

Jesus of Nazareth,

a man approved of God among you

by miracles

and wonders

and signs,

which God did by him

in the midst of you,

as ye yourselves also know:

23 Him,

being delivered

by the determinate counsel

and foreknowledge

of God,

ye have taken,

and by wicked hands

have crucified

and slain:

24 Whom God hath raised up,

having loosed the pains of death:

because it was not possible

that he should be holden of it.”  Acts 2:21-24

The “determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God” tells us that God had already established the plan before Jesus came.  And even before that!

“And the Word was made flesh,

and dwelt among us,

(and we beheld his glory,

the glory as of the only begotten

of the Father,)

full of grace and truth.

15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying,

This was he of whom I spake,

He that cometh after me

is preferred before me:

for he was before me.

16 And of his fulness

have all we received,

and grace for grace.

17 For the law was given by Moses,

but grace and truth

came by Jesus Christ.”  John 1:14-17

“In the beginning

was the Word,

and the Word

was with God,

and the Word

was God.

2 The same was

in the beginning

with God.

3 All things were made

by him;

and without him

was not any thing made

that was made.

4 In him was life;

and the life

was the light of men.”  John 1:1-4

Jesus, God the Son, was always God, always with God, and part of the very creation of all that we know!  Yet not only was Jesus before creation, but He was also the redeemer before “the beginning” all began.

“Father,

I will that they also,

whom thou hast given me,

be with me where I am;

that they may behold my glory,

which thou hast given me:

for thou lovedst me

before the foundation

of the world.”  John 17:24

Not only was Jesus “before the foundation of the world”, and we were in the heart and mind of God for salvation then as well.

“Blessed be the God and Father

of our Lord Jesus Christ,

who hath blessed us

with all spiritual blessings

in heavenly places

in Christ:

4 According as he hath chosen us

in him

before the foundation of the world,

that we should be holy

and without blame

before him in love:”  Ephesians 1:3-4

“Forasmuch as ye know

that ye were not redeemed

with corruptible things,

as silver and gold,

from your vain conversation

received by tradition

from your fathers;

19 But with the precious blood of Christ,

as of a lamb

without blemish

and without spot:

20 Who verily was foreordained

before the foundation of the world,

but was manifest

in these last times

for you,

21 Who by him

do believe in God,

that raised him up

from the dead,

and gave him glory;

that your faith

and hope

might be in God.”   1 Peter 1:18-21

So, as we consider the “incarnation” of the babe in the manger, the savior of the world, the creator of all things, may we be grateful and mindful that HE came for us, not as a second thought but because HE chose us and prepared for our salvation before the foundation of the world.  Thank you, LORD, —Father, Son and Holy Spirit—for loving me/us and preparing the sacrifice for my/our salvation.  May my/our life be a true reflection of your glory, in all things—before, during and after this Christmas celebration!!!

“Grace be to you

and peace from God the Father,

and from our Lord Jesus Christ,

4 Who gave himself for our sins,

that he might deliver us

from this present evil world,

according to the will of God

and our Father:

5 To whom be glory

for ever and ever.

Amen.” Galatians 1:3-5

“Looking for that blessed hope,

and the glorious appearing

of the great God

and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

14 Who gave himself for us,

that he might redeem us

from all iniquity,

and purify unto himself

a peculiar people,

zealous of good works.”   Titus 2:14

And the greatest celebration that we could have is to share the truth of Jesus’ eternal plan to save us unto Himself by grace through faith. May you truly know HIM.

“For by grace are ye saved

through faith;

and that not of yourselves:

it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works,

lest any man should boast.

10 For we are his workmanship,

created in Christ Jesus

unto good works,

which God hath before ordained

that we should walk in them.”   Ephesians 2:8-10

May you find the hope that the “Babe” brought to all who will believe!  He came for you and me! Take heart my dear friends.  Jesus still saves and changes lives today!

Amen and Amen!!!

Christmas Ponderings #2!!! Bible Ballistics: BBs #768

Bible Ballistics: BBs #768   Christmas Ponderings!!! #2

Let’s look today at “the carpenter”, Joseph, the builder, whether he worked in wood, stone, or other materials, he was still a builder!  Why Joseph?  Why a carpenter?  Only God really knows but I would like to give us some food for thought.  For in reality, we are all ‘builders’ of one sort or another.

“And he went out from thence,

and came into his own country;

 and his disciples follow him.

2 And when the sabbath day was come,

he began to teach in the synagogue:

and many hearing him

 were astonished, saying,

From whence hath this man

these things?

and what wisdom is this

which is given unto him,

that even such mighty works

are wrought by his hands?

3 Is not this the carpenter,

the son of Mary,

the brother of James,

and Joses,

and of Juda,

and Simon?

and are not his sisters here with us?

And they were offended at him.”  Mark 6:1-3

It seems apparent that Joseph was not in the picture, most likely not alive at the time, but his part in God’s plan is often overlooked in our attention to the story of the birth of Jesus Christ the Lord!  Let’s spend some time this morning (or whatever time you’re reading this…) looking at this humble man of faith and obedience.

“Is not this the carpenter’s son?

is not his mother called Mary?

and his brethren,

James, and Joses,

and Simon, and Judas?”  Matthew 13:55

Jesus was called a “carpenter” and “the carpenter’s son”, and it was customary for the son to follow in his father’s trade, so we can surmise that Joseph was building into his son the skills of life and livelihood, as well as modeling a life of faith and obedience.  And while we don’t know much about Joseph after Jesus’ childhood, we can see that he was known as the carpenter by those of his community, and his life of obedience is so clear in Matthew’s account of the incarnation.

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise:

When as his mother Mary

was espoused to Joseph,

before they came together,

she was found with child

of the Holy Ghost.

19 Then Joseph her husband,

being a just man,

and not willing

to make her

a publick example,

was minded to put her away privily.

20 But while he thought on these things, behold,

the angel of the Lord appeared unto him

in a dream, saying,

Joseph, thou son of David,

fear not to take unto thee Mary

thy wife:

for that which is conceived in her

is of the Holy Ghost.

21 And she shall bring forth a son,

and thou shalt call his name JESUS:

for he shall save his people

from their sins…

24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep

did as the angel of the Lord

had bidden him,

and took unto him his wife:

25 And knew her not

till she had brought forth

 her firstborn son:

and he called his name JESUS.”   Matthew 1:18-21 & 25

I don’t think we can imagine what this man of God thought of all these things, but he obediently obeyed the direction of God.  Just consider:

 a just man—being a “just” man–

 a compassionate man—considered Mary–

a diligent man—thought about what to do–

a thoughtful man—“he thought on these things”–

an obedient man—HE DID AS THE ANGEL SAID—

a self-controlled man—he knew her not….until…–

 “he called his name JESUS”!!!

I am amazed at this simple man, a carpenter-a builder, was so receptive to God’s direction, and did things that were totally outside the realm of human reason.  Yet today, we think God has to explain Himself, show us the outline, draw us a map, and line it out for our future!  Oh, Lord, help me be more like Joseph who was willing to step out in faith (literally) and follow your direction, not just this once but again when the “wise men came” as he took Mary and the babe to Egypt.

“When they saw the star,

they rejoiced

with exceeding great joy.

11 And when they were come into the house,

they saw the young child

with Mary his mother,

and fell down,

and worshipped him:

and when they had opened their treasures,

they presented unto him gifts;

gold,

and frankincense,

and myrrh.

12 And being warned of God in a dream

that they should not return to Herod,

they departed into their own country

another way.

13 And when they were departed,

behold,

the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph

in a dream, saying,

Arise, and take the young child

and his mother, and flee into Egypt,

and be thou there

until I bring thee word:

for Herod will seek the young child

to destroy him.

14 When he arose,

he took the young child

and his mother by night,

and departed into Egypt:

15 And was there

until the death of Herod:

that it might be fulfilled

which was spoken of the Lord

 by the prophet, saying,

Out of Egypt

have I called my son.”  Matthew 2:10-15

This precious man was willing to forsake his own way, and go God’s way: he took his (in our terms fiancée’) promised wife who was pregnant, but not by him; he refused to accuse her of infidelity (which meant he was taking the blame for her pre-wedding pregnancy) and took her into his home; he cared for her without benefit of connubial bliss; he took her with him to Bethlehem to register with the government where Mary delivered baby Jesus;  he hosted shepherds who also had an amazing story of angelic announcements of this child.  He apparently took up residence in Bethlehem and provided for his little family; he had to have been flabbergasted at the presence and story of the ‘wise men’ who had traveled long and far to bring gifts to this young child/infant (in the house not the stable).  Then he obeyed the message from another angelic messenger to leave Bethlehem by night and take his family to Egypt (probably financed by the gifts of the wise men)!  And waited until God told him to return, which he did with great concern for the safety of his family, and faithful obedience and concern to obey and protect the child!

“But when Herod was dead, behold,

an angel of the Lord appeareth

in a dream

to Joseph

in Egypt,

20 Saying,

Arise, and take the young child

and his mother,

and go into the land of Israel:

for they are dead

which sought the young child’s life.

21 And he arose,

and took the young child and his mother,

and came into the land of Israel.

22 But when he heard that Archelaus

did reign in Judaea

in the room of his father Herod,

he was afraid to go thither:

notwithstanding,

being warned of God in a dream,

he turned aside

into the parts of Galilee:

23 And he came

and dwelt in a city called Nazareth:

that it might be fulfilled

which was spoken by the prophets,

He shall be called a Nazarene.”   Matthew 2:19-23

Joseph spent a lifetime (however long his life was, for we don’t know when he died, except that it appears that he wasn’t present during the public ministry of Jesus) building an example of faith, obedience, and trust in God’s leading for his life and the life of his family.  He trusted God when he couldn’t really understand what was going on.  He built a house of faith, not doubt!  He built a heritage and so should we.  In fact, we are building a heritage no matter what!  Our children will follow our example more than our words.  We must remember that we are building—building up or tearing down—our choices affect those around us—up or down, and we don’t always know which way it will go; but we must be vigilant to be builders who are pleasing to God.

When we live lives of faithful love, devotion, and obedience to our Lord and Savior, then our children will see our hearts lived out in our actions!  While they may not always do that which pleases us, they can’t deny that we tried to lead them to the Savior!  I think Joseph sets an amazing example of yieldedness to God—of total obedience in the face of worldly misunderstanding—of faith over fear—of wisdom, grace, and steadfastness regardless of his circumstances.

Let’s face it, most of us would be questioning “a barn” for a delivery room—shepherds as birthday greeters—foreigners as gift bearers—yet Joseph stood fast through trails, trials, threats, and danger.  Oh, that we can learn to be so faithful.  I pray that this will encourage your heart today, and may we truly remember that “JESUS” IS the reason for every season.

“O the depth of the riches

both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!

how unsearchable

are his judgments,

and his ways

past finding out!

34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord?

or who hath been his counsellor?

35 Or who hath first given to him,

and it shall be recompensed unto him again?

36 For of him,

and through him,

and to him,

are all things:

to whom be glory

 for ever. Amen.”   Romans 11:33-36

Amen and Amen!!!

Bible Ballistics: BBs #767   Christmas Ponderings!!! #1

As we are entering the month of December, I would like to spend this month considering Jesus, His birth, His impact and just some things that have been on my heart and mind of late.  May we spend this time together focusing on The Lord Jesus and what HIS incarnation means to those who are believers as well as to a lost and dying world who needs HIS truly amazing grace, mercy, and love.  But are we making a difference and reflecting HIS glory?  We need to!

God’s love was expressed in Jesus’ birth, His life and His substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for sin which provides eternal life to all who will believe!  I’d like to start this series by looking at the shepherds.  Why were they chosen to receive the news of The Messiah’s birth; I have a few simple thoughts on the subject, and I believe they call us to consider how great a gift The Father gave as HE “gave His only begotten Son”!  God sent The Son, Jesus, using two simple people of faith to be the parents of this precious Son of God, Messiah, Redeemer, and soon coming King. Yet what the messenger told Joseph was not just about His titles, but JESUS’ purpose.

“But while he thought on these things,

behold, the angel of the Lord appeared

unto him in a dream, saying,

Joseph, thou son of David,

fear not to take unto thee Mary

thy wife:

for that which is conceived

in her is of the Holy Ghost.

21 And she shall bring forth a son,

and thou shalt call his name JESUS:

for he shall save his people

from their sins.

22 Now all this was done,

that it might be fulfilled which was spoken

of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

23 Behold, a virgin

shall be with child,

and shall bring forth a son,

and they shall call his name

Emmanuel,

which being interpreted is,

God with us.”  Matthew 1:20-23

A Son, who is, “God with us”—The “ONE” way to The Father (see John 14:6), yet also, as John the Baptizer declared HE was/is and ever shall be “the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”  To be that “ONE” way, it would cost His life’s blood on a cruel cross as the sacrificial Lamb!!!  I can’t help but think that is one of the reasons that God chose humble shepherds—some of the lowliest of people of their day—to receive the news of the “newborn KING”—a king born in a barn and laid in a manger—a feeding trough! Jesus our LORD!

“And there were in the same country shepherds

abiding in the field,

keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord

came upon them,

and the glory of the Lord

shone round about them:

and they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not:

for, behold, I bring you good tidings

of great joy,

which shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day

in the city of David

a Saviour,

which is Christ the Lord.

12 And this shall be a sign unto you;

Ye shall find the babe

wrapped in swaddling clothes,

lying in a manger.

13 And suddenly there was with the angel

a multitude of the heavenly host

praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth

peace,

good will

toward men.

15 And it came to pass,

as the angels were gone away

from them

 into heaven,

the shepherds said one to another,

Let us now go even unto Bethlehem,

and see this thing

which is come to pass,

which the Lord hath made known

unto us.

16 And they came with haste,

and found Mary,

and Joseph,

and the babe

lying in a manger.

17 And when they had seen it,

they made known abroad the saying

 which was told them

concerning this child.”  Luke 2:8-17

Simple men of faith received an amazing, unbelievable message from God, via the angels, and not only believed what they heard, but believed it enough to get up, leave their sheep, and go to see the object of this heavenly message. Then they shared the good news with others and left the convincing up to God!  I can’t help but think that God was telling them so much more than that a “baby had been born” but that a “LAMB” had arrived to be the substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for all who would believe.  As THE Lamb, that John identified clearly.

“The next day John seeth Jesus

coming unto him, and saith,

Behold the Lamb of God,

which taketh away

the sin of the world.

30 This is he of whom I said,

After me cometh a man

which is preferred before me:

for he was before me.

31 And I knew him not:

but that he should be made manifest

to Israel,

therefore am I come

baptizing with water…

…. 36 And looking upon Jesus

as he walked,

he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

37 And the two disciples heard him speak,

and they followed Jesus.”  John 1:29-31

This humble, man of the wilderness came obeying God and preaching a message that appealed to some, offended others, and puzzled most—much like the response to believers who want to share the message of Jesus’ saving grace today.  But we must remember in this time of celebrating the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ—the very Lamb of God who “taketh away the sin of the world”– that there is “nothing new under the sun” (see Ecclesiastes 1:9)!  We must remember that every person has the choice to receive HIM in repentance and faith or reject HIM and go their own way; in other words, we can accept by faith through grace the payment of sin that Jesus made at Calvary!  Or we can reject Jesus’ saving work of salvation, go our own way, and pay for our own sin.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ:

for it is the power of God

unto salvation

to every one that believeth;

to the Jew first,

and also to the Greek.

17 For therein is the righteousness of God

revealed

from faith

to faith:

as it is written,

The just shall live by faith.”   Romans 1:17-18

“For all have sinned,

 and come short

of the glory of God;”  Romans 3:23

“For the wages of sin

is death;

but the gift of God

is eternal life

through Jesus Christ

our Lord.”  Romans 6:23

It’s your choice, but choose wisely, there is a test.  So, please use this time of celebrating Jesus’ birth to “consider your ways” (See Haggai 1:5 & 7) and make sure that you are right with God; what the world thinks won’t matter when you stand before God (See Revelation 20:11-15)!  My prayer is that you will find HIM faithful and give your all to HIM!  He has never failed me—ever!  Blessings on you and yours!

Amen and Amen!!!
