What IF?  A Good Question???   A Word from THE WORD!!! #266

I am among those who are earnestly praying for revival, and I know only God can send it.  Yet God set out some parameters for restoration, forgiveness and healing.  And I’d like to share a few brief thoughts on this very thing from a verse that many know, and hopefully I can shed some light on it that we may consider the truth of where we really are and what we need to do!

IF: a supposition; uncertain possibility… a condition, requirement, or stipulation…

Keep this in mind as we consider God’s promise to Solomon.

“Thus Solomon finished the house of the LORD,

and the king’s house:

and all that came into Solomon’s heart

to make in the house of the LORD,

and in his own house,

he prosperously effected.

12 And the LORD appeared to Solomon by night,

and said unto him,

I have heard thy prayer,

and have chosen this place to myself

for an house of sacrifice.

13 If I shut up heaven

that there be no rain,

or if I command the locusts

to devour the land,

or if I send pestilence

among my people;

14 If

my people,

which are called by my name,

shall humble themselves,

and pray,

and seek my face,

and turn from their wicked ways;

then will I hear from heaven,

and will forgive their sin,

and will heal their land.”  2 Chronicles 7:11-14

I want to simply make a few comments on things that we so often miss in this passage, and may we draw near to God, willing to do the things that will lead us to real revival from God.

First and foremost is that great big “if”!  This is a term of condition—God is saying that there are some things that are expected from “my people”, those who are “called by my name”!  God isn’t talking to the world, but to those who claim His name and are truly His children.  As I so often remind us, Jesus told us in Matthew 7 that in the day of judgment there will be those who “say Lord, Lord”, yet He will tell them, “I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”  So, it seems to me that God is talking about those who have truly been born again, by responding to Him in repentance and faith in Jesus’ substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for sin—your sin and mine!

God goes on to tell us what it is that His people need to do.

Humble themselves—

to bow before God to ask Him as thePsalmist prayed, “search me O God…know my heart…. try me…see if there be any wicked way in me…lead me..”  Recognize that God is right, and I need to adjust to His way, not the other way around.

       Pray—

to truly pursue intimate, concerted, conversation with God.  Not just a check-off list, but truly an earnest and open communion with God The Father, and Jesus The Son, seeking His will for me, my family, and the culture in which I live.

       Seek MY Face—

to keep our eyes on Jesus, and desire toknow Him better through His Word—the love letter that God has written that we might be “approved unto God…rightly dividing the word of truth…”!  The Word of God is to be our daily bread, that as Job said, “I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.”  Job 23:12

As we take these things into our heart and mind, may we will be able, ready and willing to complete this quartet from God’s Word.

Turn from their wicked ways—

even we who are God’s Own, often fail and fall for the lies of the devil.  We live in a culture that not only fails to keep God’s commands and His Word, but is blatantly guilty of doing as Isaiah said,

“Woe unto them that call evil

good,

and good

evil;

that put darkness

for light,

 and light

for darkness;

that put bitter

for sweet,

and sweet

for bitter!

21 Woe unto them that are wise

in their own eyes,

and prudent

in their own sight!”  Isaiah 5:20-21

Only when we understand and are willing to hear God’s truth and yield to His demands, will we have any hope of seeing revival.  May we truly humble ourselves, pray, seek God’s face, and turn from our own sin!  Oh, Father, hear our prayer and bring us to repentance that we might see you revive and heal our land.

Amen and Amen!!!

A Friday Destination??? A Word from THE WORD!!! #265

 A Friday Destination???    A Word from THE WORD!!! #265

What value do we place on success?  Define success?  I think Jesus gives us the greatest commentary on not only our destination, but our journey along the way.  So many today are missing the joy of the journey because they can’t see past the goal!  As believers in Jesus, we have a call, and I simply want to share Jesus’ simple but profound message of truth for us today—for us all—every day!

“No man can serve two masters:

for either he will hate the one,

and love the other;

or else he will hold to the one,

and despise the other.

Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

25 Therefore I say unto you,

Take no thought for your life,

what ye shall eat,

or what ye shall drink;

nor yet for your body,

what ye shall put on.

Is not the life

more than meat,

and the body

than raiment?

26 Behold the fowls of the air:

for they sow not,

neither do they reap,

nor gather into barns;

yet your heavenly Father

feedeth them.

Are ye not much better than they?

27 Which of you by taking thought

can add one cubit unto his stature?

28 And why take ye thought for raiment?

Consider the lilies of the field,

how they grow;

they toil not,

neither do they spin:

29 And yet I say unto you,

That even Solomon in all his glory

was not arrayed like one of these.”   Matthew 6:24-29

As the old cowboy movies used to say, we can speak “with forked tongue”!  Western speak for lie!  But how many of us not only lie with our tongue, but we are walking a forked road!  And while we won’t look at it today Matthew 7, goes on to remind us that we must choose either the “broad way which leads to destruction” or the “straight gate which leads to life”; and as it goes on to tell us, there is a difference between the “many” and the “few”!  Read Matthew 7 and see the contrasts that Jesus makes about roads, and foundations, and fruit.  While I post it often, I’ll leave it to you to check out for yourself today and we’ll go on with chapter 6.

Please don’t miss what Jesus says about the flowers of the field; He said that Solomon, the wealthiest man to ever live, couldn’t clothe himself in more beauty than God clothed the lilies with!  Wow!  What are you focused on?  Jesus isn’t saying that we aren’t to take care of physical and material needs, but He is telling us to choose wisely where we are attempting to go, and what we want to find when we get there.  Jesus had more to say; let’s take a look at it.

“Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field,

which to day is,

and to morrow is cast into the oven,

shall he not much more clothe you,

O ye of little faith?

31 Therefore take no thought, saying,

What shall we eat?

or, What shall we drink?

or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32 (For after all these things

do the Gentiles seek:)

for your heavenly Father knoweth

that ye have need of all these things.

33 But seek ye first

the kingdom of God,

and his righteousness;

and all these things

shall be added unto you.

34 Take therefore no thought

for the morrow:

for the morrow

shall take thought for the things of itself.

Sufficient unto the day

is the evil thereof.”  Matthew 6:30-34

I’m not saying I am always living in a way that is seeking “first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness” but, my friends, it is my top priority, and Jesus and Father God have never failed me yet!  And I know He never will.  We are called to be faithful stewards of what God entrusts to us as we work (which He also calls us to do) to be faithful servants of our King, seeking HIS Kingdom and righteousness!  As Jesus said, “your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things…”!

Are you struggling with a need?  Are you questioning what and where God wants you to be?  Get into His Word and He will reveal to you what His kingdom work is and as you grow in His righteousness, you will find peace, joy and fulfillment in His provision and direction.  Here’s a good place to start!  Be blessed my friends as you walk on God’s path, you will find life!

“Trust in the LORD, and

do good;

so shalt thou dwell in the land,

and verily thou shalt be fed.

4 Delight thyself also in the LORD;

and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

5 Commit thy way unto the LORD;

trust also in him;

and he shall bring it to pass.

6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness

as the light,

and thy judgment

as the noonday.

7 Rest in the LORD,

and wait patiently for him:

fret not thyself

because of him who prospereth in his way,

because of the man who bringeth wicked devices

to pass.

8 Cease from anger,

and forsake wrath:

fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

9 For evildoers shall be cut off:

but those that wait upon the LORD,

they shall inherit the earth.” Psalm 37:3-9

All this because of God’s gracious salvation; provided by His Son’s substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for our sin on a cross.  Blessings on your day my friends.

Amen and Amen!!!

Changing Truth??? A Word from THE WORD!!! #264

 Changing Truth???    A Word from THE WORD!!! #264

I would like to spend some time this morning considering what God says about truth; and like it or not our world is steadily changing what they consider truth.  As one who follows Jesus and The Word of God, I believe that God’s truth is truth, and we must remember that the enemy of our soul is the great liar—Jesus said so!  As the old folks used to say, Jesus told the leaders “how the cow ate the cabbage”!

“Jesus said unto them,

If God were your Father,

ye would love me:

for I proceeded forth and came from God;

neither came I of myself,

but he sent me.

43 Why do ye not understand my speech?

even because ye cannot hear my word.

44 Ye are of your father the devil,

and the lusts of your father ye will do.

He was a murderer from the beginning,

and abode not in the truth,

because there is no truth in him.

When he speaketh a lie,

he speaketh of his own:

for he is a liar,

and the father of it.

45 And because I tell you the truth,

ye believe me not.”  John 8:42-45

We have been called to “speak the truth in love”, but when it is not received, we cannot force people to believe only call them to the Savior Jesus!  Jesus never changes, and He never chased after anyone to follow Him.  We must all choose, but remember we are to be fishers of men and sowers of the seed—the cleaning and harvesting is in God’s hands!  Truth never changes!

“Jesus Christ the same

yesterday,

and to day,

and for ever.”  Hebrews 13:8

This same Jesus made it clear that the choice belongs to each person, and that we who follow Him will never be in the majority in this world!

“Enter ye in at the strait gate:

for wide is the gate,

and broad is the way,

that leadeth to destruction,

and many there be which go in thereat:

14 Because strait is the gate,

and narrow is the way,

which leadeth unto life,

and few there be that find it.

15 Beware of false prophets,

which come to you in sheep’s clothing,

but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

16 Ye shall know them by their fruits…”.  Matthew 7:13-16a

Notice the difference between the “strait” and the “broad” roads, and between the “many” and the “few”; it is one of the most significant things in understanding truth and realizing that not everyone wants truth!  Or Jesus!  And believe it or not, scripture tells us what the standard is—Jesus, the living Word, and the breath of the written Word!

“For the word of God is

quick,

and powerful,

and sharper than any twoedged sword,

piercing even to the dividing asunder

of soul and spirit,

and of the joints and marrow,

and is a discerner

of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

13 Neither is there any creature

that is not manifest in his sight:

but all things

are naked and opened unto the eyes of him

with whom we have to do.

14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest,

that is passed into the heavens,

Jesus the Son of God,

let us hold fast our profession.

15 For we have not an high priest

which cannot be touched

with the feeling of our infirmities;

but was in all points

tempted like as we are,

yet without sin.

16 Let us therefore

come boldly unto the throne of grace,

that we may obtain mercy,

and find grace to help

in time of need.”  Hebrews 4:12-16

I give testimony that Jesus has never failed, and I know He never will.  I’ve walked with Him for some 50 years; and no I didn’t always get it right, but when I failed it was usually because I was going my way and not His.  So, I praise God for not only His truth, but for his forgiveness, mercy and grace that can always be found at that “throne of grace”!  Don’t forget that God is always on call!  He neither slumbers nor sleeps (See Psalm 121:4)!

So as we go from day to day in this lost and dying world remember that there is truth, and it will stand!  We must choose what kind of nation we desire to see and stand fast for truth.  It’s of urgent importance.

“Righteousness exalteth a nation:

but sin is a reproach to any people.” Proverbs 14:34.

Amen and Amen!!!

 In His Glory???    A Word from THE WORD!!! #263

“Be careful for nothing;

but in every thing by prayer and supplication

with thanksgiving

let your requests be made known unto God.

7 And the peace of God,

which passeth all understanding,

shall keep your hearts and minds

through Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brethren,

whatsoever things are true,

whatsoever things are honest,

whatsoever things are just,

whatsoever things are pure,

whatsoever things are lovely,

whatsoever things are of good report;

if there be any virtue,

and if there be any praise,

think on these things…

…. 13 I can do all things

through Christ

which strengtheneth me…

… 18 But I have all,

and abound:

I am full,

having received of Epaphroditus

the things which were sent from you,

an odour of a sweet smell,

a sacrifice acceptable,

 wellpleasing to God.

19 But my God shall supply all your need

according to his riches

in glory

by Christ Jesus.

20 Now unto God and our Father

be glory for ever and ever.

Amen.”  Portions of Philippians 4:6-20

While these are some of my favorite passages, I want to take a little bit of a different spin on them.  God laid something on my heart recently that I had never thought about; for we see so many things in scripture that refer to the “glory” of God—and I think that we may not be thinking about this in its fulness.  We often think of God’s glory as the bright shining light, the beauty that is so aptly described in much of The Revelation about our God and Jesus, The Son, but I think often we get so caught up in the “bling” that we miss something simple—God IS glory—it is His nature, His character as well as the exhibition of His power toward us; especially those things that scripture ties with Jesus’ ministry to His own.  Even as Jesus talks about in the letter to the Laodicean church.  His glory isn’t something we purchase with money, good works, or virtue, but by God’s grace, bought and paid for at Calvary, for whosoever will come to Jesus in repentance and faith/belief in His substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for my sin and yours—for all have sinned!  Note what Jesus says to this “church”!

“Because thou sayest,

I am rich,

and increased with goods,

and have need of nothing;

and knowest not

that thou art

wretched,

and miserable,

and poor, and blind,

and naked:

18 I counsel thee to buy of me

gold tried in the fire,

that thou mayest be rich;

and white raiment,

that thou mayest be clothed,

and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear;

and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve,

that thou mayest see.

19 As many as I love,

I rebuke

and chasten:

be zealous therefore,

and repent.”  Revelation 3:17-19

This is the work of God, to buy without money!  It comes by faith in His Son; even as Isaiah painted God’s picture of this.

“Ho, every one that thirsteth,

come ye to the waters,

and he that hath no money;

come ye,

buy,

and eat;

 yea, come,

 buy wine

and milk

without money

and without price.

2 Wherefore do ye spend money

for that which is not bread?

and your labour

for that which satisfieth not?

hearken diligently unto me,

and eat ye that which is good,

 and let your soul delight itself in fatness.

3 Incline your ear,

and come unto me:

hear,

and your soul shall live;

and I will make an everlasting covenant with you,

even the sure mercies of David.”  Isaiah 55:1-3

Jesus reminds us that even within the church we can become so self-satisfied and consumed with the world.  We can become so deceived that Jesus could say of us:

 “Because thou sayest,

I am rich, and increased with goods,

and have need of nothing;

and knowest not

that thou art

wretched, and miserable,

and poor, and blind, and naked…”

An unexpected message to a self-sufficient church, counting on all their “stuff” as their sufficiency.  Yet Jesus gave them an unexpected, but true, description of their spiritual state; calling them to see their real condition and be zealous to repent.  Isaiah tells us how they can buy without funds?  We must come to God in our abject spiritual poverty seeking what only He can give.  We must come as the tax-collector that Jesus spoke of.

“Two men went up into the temple to pray;

the one a Pharisee,

and the other a publican.

11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself,

God, I thank thee,

that I am not as other men are,

extortioners, unjust,

adulterers,

or even as this publican.

12 I fast twice in the week,

I give tithes of all that I possess.

13 And the publican,

standing afar off,

would not lift up so much as his eyes

unto heaven,

but smote upon his breast, saying,

God be merciful to me a sinner.

14 I tell you,

this man went down to his house justified

rather than the other:

for every one that exalteth himself

shall be abased;

and he that humbleth himself

shall be exalted.”  Luke 18:10-14

As long as we think we have our own glory, we have no need of God, and we will never understand the glory of God that comes to those who bow, like this publican, and ask for His mercy and saving grace in Jesus’ substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for our sin.  He who has no sin, has no need of a Savior (in his own mind)!  God’s glory is His very nature, and He pours out of His grace and mercy so that we can recognize His glory when we bow.  And just a few scriptures to bring this into focus.  Sin is the issue, and if you haven’t seen your sin, you may need to listen to Jesus’ message to the Laodicean church.   Remember Jesus is God and exhibits this very glory in all He does for us!

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him,

and given him a name

which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus

every knee should bow,

of things in heaven,

and things in earth,

and things under the earth;

11 And that every tongue should confess

that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.”                   Philippians 2:9-11

Jesus came because of our sin.  Have you dealt with yours?

“For all have sinned,

and come short of the glory of God;” Romans 3:23

“For the wages of sin is death;

but the gift of God is eternal life

through Jesus Christ our Lord.”  Romans 6:23

And Jesus’ own call to all will recognize what He is saying and come in response to His call.  Is He knocking at your heart’s door?  Won’t you invite Him in!  You will never regret it and then you will come to know His glory!

“Behold,

I stand at the door, and knock:

if any man hear my voice,

and open the door,

I will come in to him,

and will sup with him,

and he with me.”  Revelation 3:20

Amen and Amen!!!

 A Friday Prayer of Praise???  A Word from THE WORD!!! #262

“I will praise thee;

for I am fearfully and wonderfully made:

marvellous are thy works;

and that my soul knoweth right well.

15 My substance was not hid from thee,

when I was made in secret,

and curiously wrought

in the lowest parts of the earth.

16 Thine eyes did see my substance,

yet being unperfect;

and in thy book all my members were written,

which in continuance were fashioned,

when as yet there was none of them.

17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me,

O God!

how great is the sum of them!

18 If I should count them,

they are more in number than the sand:

when I awake,

I am still with thee.

19 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God:

depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.

20 For they speak against thee wickedly,

and thine enemies take thy name in vain.

21 Do not I hate them, O LORD,

that hate thee?

and am not I grieved with those

that rise up against thee?

22 I hate them with perfect hatred:

I count them mine enemies.”  Psalm 139:14-22

This Psalm of David is an amazing account of David’s recognition of the creator of all things, including us!  How often we forget that we are God’s creation, even as David reminds us in the 100th Psalm:

“Know ye that the LORD he is God:

it is he that hath made us,

and not we ourselves…”. Psalm 100:3a

As David rehearses the wonder of man’s creation and the worth of our God, not just because of what He does, but because of Who He Is!  Even as Paul told the Corinthian believers—because we are so apt to forget in our pride and arrogance as human beings—even as born-again human beings we can be distracted by our own flesh (and of course Satan is right there handing us the fuel!)

“Not that we are sufficient

of ourselves

to think any thing

as of ourselves;

but our sufficiency is of God;” 2 Corinthians 3:5

Jesus said it Himself as He spent the last hours of His life teaching His followers truth; even knowing that they wouldn’t get it until much later!  After His death, burial and resurrection they not only got it, but shared it unto their death.  And many of them died martyr’s deaths!

“I am the true vine,

and my Father is the husbandman.

2 Every branch in me

that beareth not fruit he taketh away:

and every branch that beareth fruit,

he purgeth it,

that it may bring forth more fruit.

3 Now ye are clean

through the word which I have spoken unto you.

4 Abide in me,

and I in you.

As the branch

cannot bear fruit of itself,

except it abide in the vine;

 no more can ye,

except ye abide in me.

5 I am the vine,

ye are the branches:

He that abideth in me,

and I in him,

the same bringeth forth much fruit:

for without me

ye can do nothing.”  John 15:1-5

The bottom line is relatively simple—we must abide in Jesus, praising Him through thick or thin, happy or sad, simple or difficult—for we are the sheep of His pasture.  I am His and He is mine—and He has never failed me!  Ever!!!  This brings us back to the ending of Psalm 139, a prayer that I pray often, and encourage you to pray it, memorize it (if you haven’t already) and ask God to bring it to your heart as often as necessary!  May our hearts be drawn to The Master!

“Search me, O God,

and know my heart:

try me,

and know my thoughts:

24 And see

if there be any wicked way in me,

and lead me

in the way everlasting.”  Psalm 139:23-24

Amen and Amen!!!
