Bible Ballistics: BBs #503 What Color Are You Painting In???

We live in a world of color—beautiful colors that God created for our pleasure as well as utility! Yet many are tempted today to paint God’s message in worldly colors, and we can’t do that without diminishing the truth of God’s message.

“For after that in the wisdom of God

the world by wisdom knew not God,

it pleased God

by the foolishness of preaching

to save them

that believe.

22 For the Jews require a sign,

and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

23 But we preach Christ crucified,

unto the Jews a stumblingblock,

and unto the Greeks foolishness;

24 But unto them which are called,

both Jews and Greeks,

Christ

the power of God,

and the wisdom of God.

25 Because the foolishness of God

is wiser than men;

and the weakness of God

is stronger than men.” 1 Corinthians 1:21-25

God’s wisdom—that is the only true wisdom! The Book of Proverbs speaks of godly wisdom throughout its entirety, let’s look at just a few verses today (And remember “fear of the Lord” is referring to reverential awe.)

“The fear of the LORD

is the beginning of knowledge:

but fools despise

wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7

“The fear of the LORD

is the beginning of wisdom:

and the knowledge of the holy

is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10

“A true witness delivereth souls:

but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.

26 In the fear of the LORD

is strong confidence:

and his children shall have a place

of refuge.

27 The fear of the LORD

is a fountain of life,

to depart from the snares of death.”   Proverbs 14:25-27

Oh, to rest in the “fear of the Lord”! Oh, that we could truly see through the lies of the enemy, the deceit of the world, and the illusions and distractions of a world denying God on every hand!!! We must come to understand and accept that God’s way aren’t the ways of the world, and HIS Word will never appeal to the masses—it never has and it never will. Not because God doesn’t love the world, but because the world doesn’t love or desire to know The God Almighty who sent “His only begotten Son” to die for them—for all who will come to Him in repentance and faith.

“The Lord is not slack

concerning his promise,

as some men count slackness;

but is longsuffering

to us-ward,

not willing that any should perish,

but that all should come

to repentance.”   1 Peter 3:10

Every person has the choice whether he/she will receive the truth of God and be saved by coming to Jesus, or whether we will choose the pleasures of “sin for a season” (See Hebrews 11:25)? Just remember there is a consequence to every choice, and while God has given every person the privilege to choose—we can NOT choose the consequences for our sin!

“For the wages of sin is death;

but the gift of God is eternal life

through Jesus Christ our Lord.”    Romans 6;23

And in closing a paramount insight into the difference between the world’s ways and God’s is found in Paul’s letter to the Corinthians; I pray that you will ponder it today, and examine your own “color palette”! What colors are you painting before the world? Are you receiving The Spirit’s direction in your life choices, or the world’s? Choose wisely—there is a test at the end!

“For what man knoweth the things of a man,

save the spirit of man

which is in him?

even so the things of God

knoweth no man,

but the Spirit of God.

12 Now we have received,

not the spirit of the world,

but the spirit which is of God;

that we might know the things

that are freely given to us

of God.

13 Which things also we speak,

not in the words

which man’s wisdom teacheth,

but which the Holy Ghost teacheth;

comparing spiritual things

with spiritual.

14 But the natural man

receiveth not the things

of the Spirit of God:

for they are foolishness

unto him:

neither can he know them,

because they are spiritually discerned.

15 But he that is spiritual

judgeth all things,

yet he himself is

judged of no man.

16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord,

that he may instruct him?

But we have the mind of Christ.”    1 Corinthians 2:11-16

May the “mind of Christ” pervade our heart, and mind, and choices in every step today and each day!!!

Amen and Amen!

“By My Spirit, Saith The Lord”??? Bible Ballistics: BBs #502

Bible Ballistics: BBs #502   “By My Spirit, Saith The Lord”???

“Then he answered and spake unto me, saying,

This is the word of the LORD

unto Zerubbabel, saying,

Not by might,

nor by power,

but by my spirit,

saith the LORD of hosts.”    Zechariah 4:6

This message from God to Zerubbabel is one of the verses that I ponder and call to mind frequently, for so often in our journey of life we become weary, tired, frustrated, or disappointed, and this powerful word of encouragement is a “strong tower” to the weary soul! It is a sure “word” that we can “take to the bank” of spiritual resources and encouragement, for it is by God’s power that we press on, not our own! Even as Paul told us in Philippians 4:13:

“I can do all things

through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

Peter also reminds us that God’s Word is THE sure rock in this world of sinking sand! And while men of flesh and blood recorded down, it was truly God’s breath that moved their pen!

“We have also a more sure word of prophecy;

whereunto ye do well

that ye take heed,

as unto a light that shineth

in a dark place,

until the day dawn,

and the day star arise

in your hearts:

20 Knowing this first,

that no prophecy of the scripture

is of any private interpretation.

21 For the prophecy came not

in old time

by the will of man:

but holy men of God

spake

as they were moved

by the Holy Ghost.”    2 Peter 1:19-21

So regardless of what you face on your journey today, just look up, walk forward and press on for and with Jesus, trusting to HIS wisdom, direction and provision in every way—every day, and diving into HIS Word!

And one final reminder that is truly a life verse for us all, as well as a timely reminder that we can depend on God’s Word and His wisdom no matter what we are facing; and that we don’t have to depend on our own limited understanding.

“Trust in the LORD

with all thine heart;

and lean not

unto thine own understanding.

6 In all thy ways

acknowledge him,

and he shall direct thy paths.

7 Be not wise

in thine own eyes:

fear the LORD,

and depart from evil.

8 It shall be health

to thy navel,

and marrow

to thy bones.”   Proverbs 3:5-8

Amen and Amen!

That They Might Know??? Bible Ballistics: Vol. 12 No. 09

Bible Ballistics: Vol. 12 No. 09   That They Might Know???

I’m sometimes asked why I teach inductive Bible Study, or why I write a blog, and my answer is usually the same; I teach and write because it is what God called me to do, and for the most part I love doing it. Which is not to say that I don’t get tired, weary, or sometimes discouraged just like you do, but I know that the gifts and calling that God has extended to me are a joy and delight to my soul. But there is another purpose that goes beyond my comfort or even my assurance that I am walking in personal obedience, it is the clear scriptural teaching that God wants the world to “know” Him! Jesus, His disciples and the prophets, remind us again and again that God is at work “that the world may know”!

“These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said,

Father,

the hour is come;

glorify thy Son,

that thy Son also may

glorify thee:

2 As thou hast given him power

over all flesh,

that he should give eternal life

to as many as thou hast given him.

3 And this is life eternal,

that they might know thee

the only true God,

and Jesus Christ,

whom thou hast sent.” John 17:1-3

This beautiful prayer is Jesus’ petition to The Father for Himself and the cross that lay before Him, as well as for us who are His own; as well as for those would come to “know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent”! While the ‘model prayer’ that Jesus taught His disciples in Matthew 6 is often called “The Lord’s Prayer”, this prayer of Jesus’ in John 17 is truly “The Lord’s Prayer”, and what God wants us to “know” IS Him, and The Son whom He sent to die for our sin (See John 3!). God wants us all to know Him personally, to come into an intimate love relationship with Him both now and for all eternity!

When Solomon dedicated the Temple that he had built for God he prayed:

“Hear thou in heaven

thy dwelling place,

and do according to all

that the stranger calleth to thee for:

that all people of the earth

may know thy name,

to fear thee,

as do thy people Israel;

and that they may know

that this house,

which I have builded,

is called by thy name.” 1 Kings 8:43

While Solomon had his issues later in life, he was committed to build the Temple that God had promised his father, David, that he would be privileged to build. He also understood that “this” house was built unto God not for his own glory, and his prayer was that “all people of the earth may know” who God was and that this was “His” house. We also need to learn that our ‘work’ and ‘service’ for God The Father and Jesus The Son, is His work through the power of The Holy Spirit in us, not for our promotion, advancement or wealth! Some today are often far afield when it comes to serving God for HIS glory and not their own!

The Psalmist reminds us powerfully of our purpose, much as the Apostle Paul told us to “press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus”!

“Help me,

O LORD

my God:

O save me

according to thy mercy:

27 That they may know

that this is thy hand;

that thou, LORD,

hast done it.” Psalm 109:26-27

Our goal ought to be to reflect the glory, work, grace and love of our Lord—not seeking to claim the credit for God’s work in us, but being more focused on our own “glory” than on God’s glory; for as Jesus reminds us:

“I am the vine,

ye are the branches:

He that abideth in me,

and I in him,

the same bringeth forth

much fruit:

for without me

ye can do nothing.”   John 15:5

Isaiah is replete with references to God’s wanting people to “know” HIM—all people! Our goal ought to be that others will come to know Him as Savior (and not have to face Him as Judge when there is no recourse for salvation, for every “knee will bow”—either to the Lord and Savior in this life, or before Judge Jesus when He returns!)! Are you sharing what YOU know? Do you know HIM? Don’t keep it a secret!

“I will plant in the wilderness

the cedar,

the shittah tree,

and the myrtle,

and the oil tree;

I will set in the desert

the fir tree,

and the pine,

and the box tree together:

20 That they may see,

and know,

and consider,

and understand

together,

that the hand of the LORD

hath done this,

and the Holy One of Israel

hath created it.” Isaiah 41:19-20

Oh that we would share the burden of God—that “they may know” the wonder and beauty of the cross. The God who not only loved us so much that “He gave His only begotten son”, but who wants people to know that very love and salvation!

Isaiah had told the people that idols were futile, for they “see not, neither do they hear” yet God wanted them to see that HE IS the only true, sovereign, Almighty God of the universe.

“I am the LORD,

and there is none else,

there is no God beside me:

I girded thee,

though thou hast not known me:

6 That they may know

from the rising of the sun,

and from the west,

that there is none beside me.

I am the LORD,

and there is none else.”   Isaiah 45:5-6

No matter “who” or “what” we set up as our ‘god/idol’—God Almighty is telling Isaiah, his audience and us that “I am the LORD, and there is none else”—no matter whether that is the popular message of the day or not—it is the truth and we will never bring people to genuine, life-changing salvation apart from the Gospel of Jesus, which clearly proclaims that there is no other way.

“Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? 6 Jesus saith unto him,

I am the way,

the truth,

and the life:

no man cometh unto the Father,

but by me.” John 14:5-6

Jesus IS the only way, and when we go back to His ‘High Priestly’ prayer in John 17, we find the same message repeated again by our Lord Jesus as He faced the cross!

“Neither pray I for these alone,

but for them also which shall believe

on me

through their word;

21 That they all may be one;

as thou, Father,

art in me,

and I in thee,

that they also may be one

in us:

that the world may believe

that thou hast sent me.

22 And the glory which thou gavest me

I have given them;

that they may be one,

even as we are one:

23 I in them,

and thou in me,

that they may be made perfect

in one;

and that the world may know

that thou hast sent me,

and hast loved them,

as thou hast loved me.”    John 17:20-23

When we are born again by the Spirit of God, we become a testimony to the world (good or bad!):

“that the world may know

that thou hast sent me,

and hast loved them,

as thou hast loved me”!

We are HIS witnesses—witnesses with ONE message—for we have only ONE Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ The Lord! And prayerfully the world we see that we have “been with Jesus”

“Be it known unto you all,

and to all the people of Israel,

that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,

whom ye crucified,

whom God raised from the dead,

even by him doth this man stand here

before you whole.

11 This is the stone

which was set at nought

of you builders,

which is become the head

of the corner.

12 Neither is there salvation in any other:

for there is none other name

under heaven

given among men,

whereby we must be saved.

13 Now when they saw the boldness

of Peter and John,

and perceived that they were

unlearned

and ignorant men,

they marvelled;

and they took knowledge of them,

that they had been with Jesus.”   Acts 4:10-13

Jesus IS the only way! We have only One message and Jesus is HIS name—Jesus and His substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for our sin is the only way to God!!!

“For I delivered unto you first of all

that which I also received,

how that Christ

died for our sins

according to the scriptures;

4 And that he was buried,

and that he rose again the third day

according to the scriptures:

5 And that he was seen of Cephas,

then of the twelve:” 1 Corinthians 15:3-5

We are changed by His saving power—“the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin”!!! Amen and Amen. And when we are truly born again, cleansed “from all sin”, it ought to be seen in our living.

“I beseech you therefore, brethren,

by the mercies of God,

that ye present your bodies

a living sacrifice,

holy,

acceptable unto God,

which is your reasonable service.

2 And be not conformed

to this world:

but be ye transformed

by the renewing of your mind,

that ye may prove

what is that good,

and acceptable,

and perfect,

will of God.”   Romans 12:1-2

Our call is to seek HIS face, being transformed by renewing our hearts and minds in HIS Word, being a reflection of our Lord to a lost and dying world in need of the Gospel of The Savior who loves them.

So may we take it to heart and be HIS testimony?

“That they may know

from the rising of the sun,

and from the west,

that there is none beside me.

I am the LORD,

and there is none else”!!!

Amen and Amen!!!

What About Hospitality??? Bible Ballistics: BBs #501

1 Peter 4:8-10, 1 Timothy 3:2, Hebrews 13:1-2, Hospitality, Lead, Love, Matthew 22:36-40, Romans 12:12-15

Bible Ballistics: BBs #501   What About Hospitality???

Hospitality: “the friendly reception and treatment of guests or strangers; the quality or disposition of receiving and treating guests or strangers in a warm, friendly and generous way.”

I was raised in the South by a southern mother and father, and I am grateful for the things that they taught us children in word and deed, and one of those things was the gift of hospitality. We were raised in a time when people gathered together for food and fellowship; kids’ played outside together and developed life-long friendships and camaraderie; and we had such deep and beneficial interactions and relationship that came out of those gatherings. People shared with their neighbors from the gardens that we all had, and every child knew that our behavior was being observed by others who would “tell” our parents of any errant choices. It was a time that makes me smile to this day, and yet makes me sad that most children today have no idea of a culture or community of such common care, who exercised the beauty of hospitality.

Hospitality is simply opening our hearts and homes to those whom God sends our way.

“And above all things

have fervent charity

among yourselves:

for charity shall cover

the multitude of sins.

9 Use hospitality

one to another

without grudging.

10 As every man hath received the gift,

even so minister the same

one to another,

as good stewards

of the manifold grace of God.”   1 Peter 4:8-10

Jesus’ followers ought to extend hospitality as we have opportunity. It may take a little effort to get started but it brings with it a joy and delight in gaining new friends to share our hearts and lives with. Occasions to share and teach the younger generation to do the same thing, and we need it so desperately—homes full of Jesus spilling over into the lives of other believers as well as those who need Jesus! The author of Hebrews calls us to “entertain strangers” (the NASB translates it “practice hospitality”) for we don’t always know whom we may be reaching out to.

“Let brotherly love continue.

2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers:

for thereby some have entertained

angels unawares.” Hebrews 13:1-2

So often we in the church seem to relegate everything and every activity to the “church house”, rather than taking opportunity to open our homes to others that we might grow in our relationships and intimacy with one another. I have a very dear friend, who is now with the Lord, with whom we often visited after church when I was a child—a precious, godly lady who loved me unconditionally; a light in my life that was always glad to see me, even when I wasn’t very welcome in other places (I wasn’t always what God wanted me to be!). She helped make me the woman that I am today by her open home, her open heart and her godly care and love for me. I grieved more deeply at her death than any other person I’ve lost (other than my father) because her practice of love and “hospitality” made a difference in my life from a child! I pray that I can be a difference in the lives of those God has sent to me—God calls us to it!

“A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober,

of good behaviour,

given to hospitality,

apt to teach;”   1 Timothy 3:2

 Our leaders should be people who practice hospitality by and for an example, but it should be the practice of every believer, not only because we love Jesus, but because 1 we love people and ought to pursue every occasion that God opens for us to influence the lives of those He brings into our lives—it can be life changing for them and us, even as Paul told the Roman believers.

“Rejoicing in hope;

patient in tribulation;

continuing instant in prayer;

13 Distributing to the necessity of saints;

given to hospitality.

14 Bless them which persecute you:

bless, and curse not.

15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice,

and weep with them that weep.”   Romans 12:12-15

We must bring back to our churches the art of “hospitality”—we must! I am blessed to be part of a fellowship of believers who genuinely care for one another and try to practice genuine hospitality—may we lead others to pursue it! Peter reminded us (above) that we must “Use hospitality one to another without grudging” for God knows the motives in our heart as we reach out!

And in closing, just a few practical hints that might ease your hesitation that “I can’t do that, I can’t cook, clean…..!” I’m not talking about gourmet 9-course dinners; but I am saying we need to open our homes to others! If you don’t cook bake a frozen pie and invite someone over to share it with your family! Or pick up carryout and share it with someone less fortunate than you. Find an easy recipe for soup and serve it with chips and salsa—in fact if you live in OK/TX it’s perfectly acceptable to just serve chips and salsa or cheese dip!!! Ice cream and store-bought cookies is always a winner. It’s not what you serve but the fact that you are sharing your home with someone who may not have ever been invited anywhere!

I’d like to relate a testimony from my mother. When she married my father she didn’t know anything about making a “home”, as she had left home when she was 15 or 16 and never had anything to really take care of. She was welcomed by my father’s family and my aunt helped her learn to clean and cook as much by example as instruction, and while my mother never “liked housework”, she did what she learned to be important to have a good and orderly home. We never know whom we can help to learn to be a wiser homebuilder—and we all have those watching us, that we can teach by example as we share our lives and homes. Practicing hospitality as God brings others into our lives.

So go for it today—reach out and touch a life! You don’t know what God has in store for them or you!!!

“Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

37 Jesus said unto him,

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God

with all thy heart,

and with all thy soul,

and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it,

Thou shalt love thy neighbour

as thyself.

40 On these two commandments

hang all the law and the prophets.”   Matthew 22:36-40

Amen!!!

I Know That I Know!!! Bible Ballistics: BBs #500

2 Timothy 1:7-13, Faithful God, Fearless, I Know Whom I Have Beleived, Trusting God, Unafraid

Bible Ballistics: BBs #500   I Know That I Know!!!

I was asked recently how I always stayed so “perky”, and I responded that like anyone else I have my moments, but they are usually in private. I also shared something about knowing that God had it, and that anyone who thinks I’m some kind of “super” woman, or saint simply need to ask my husband and children about my “moments”! The truth is that I have walked with Jesus for a long time, and I have been through a lot of failure, crises, tragedy and confusion at various times, yet I have always found God faithful at every turn; and that experience and confidence in God, help me to remain “perky” and positive that God has never, nor will HE ever leave me to deal with anything alone, and I trust His sovereign will for me! Having said all of that, I’d like to share a passage that means a lot to me, and it contains several of my favorite verses in all of scripture.

I pray that this simple reminder of what God has done for us will encourage your heart today. Even as Paul wrote it to his ‘son-in-the-ministry’ as an encouragement, an update and a challenge to live faithfully for God, may it lift our hearts today? Even as my friend Jo always clings to verse 7 to remind her that we don’t have to be afraid, may you find the hope, faith, courage and encouragement that you need today in this precious word from God to you!

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear;

but of power,

and of love,

and of a sound mind.

8 Be not thou therefore ashamed

of the testimony of our Lord,

nor of me his prisoner:

but be thou partaker

of the afflictions of the gospel

according to the power of God;

9 Who hath saved us,

and called us

with an holy calling,

not according to our works,

but according to his

own purpose

and grace,

which was given us in Christ Jesus

before the world began,

10 But is now made manifest

by the appearing of our Saviour

Jesus Christ,

who hath abolished death,

and hath brought life

and immortality

to light through the gospel:

11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher,

and an apostle,

and a teacher of the Gentiles.

12 For the which cause I also suffer

these things:

nevertheless I am not ashamed:

for I know

whom I have believed,

and am persuaded

that he is able

to keep that which I

have committed unto him

against that day.

13 Hold fast the form of sound words,

which thou hast heard of me,

in faith

and love

which is in Christ Jesus.”    2 Timothy 1:7-13

Press on dear friend, we don’t have to fear but to hold fast—Jesus is coming soon! Amen and Amen!!!
