Bible Ballistics: BBs #677  Some Things Haven’t Changed???

We are living in a world that changes every day, and for the most part the changes aren’t necessarily good.  So often we face an opposition that just wants us to be quiet and/or ‘go away’ (and when Jesus Christ calls us out of this world they will surely get their wish) but we have been called to share the truth of the Gospel of Jesus—that the cross brings new life to those who come to Jesus in repentance and faith!

“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying,

All power is given unto me

in heaven

and in earth.

19 Go ye therefore,

and teach all nations,

baptizing them

in the name of the Father,

and of the Son,

and of the Holy Ghost:

20 Teaching them to observe all things

whatsoever I have commanded you:

and, lo, I am with you alway,

even unto the end of the world.

Amen.”  Matthew 28:18-20

Our commission from our Lord is to spread the Good News that Jesus saves!  Only Jesus can save—and He will save all who will come to Him in repentance and faith—the truth that the Apostles shared after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus, and the impartation of the Holy Spirit to the believers.

“Be it known unto you all,

and to all the people of Israel,

that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,

whom ye crucified,

whom God raised from the dead,

even by him

doth this man stand here

before you whole.

11 This is the stone which was set at nought

of you builders,

which is become the head of the corner.

12 Neither is there salvation in any other:

for there is none other name under heaven

given among men,

whereby we must be saved.”  Acts 4:10-12

In fact, Jesus Himself made it clear that there is only one way to God the Father—through HIS substitutionary, atoning sacrifice on Calvary!

“Jesus saith unto him,

I am the way,

the truth,

and the life:

no man

cometh unto the Father,

but by me.”  John 14:6

And this same Jesus IS the same—always!  And HIS Word hasn’t changed either

“Jesus Christ the same

yesterday,

and to day,

and for ever.” Hebrews 13:8

“In hope of eternal life,

which God,

that cannot lie,

promised before the world began;

3 But hath in due times

manifested his word

through preaching,

which is committed unto me

according to the commandment

of God our Saviour;”  Titus 1:2-3

Jesus is the only way—the only truth—the only way to have eternal life—past, present, and forever.  Jesus not only gives us the answers—HE IS the answer, and when we lift HIM up, HE will accomplish HIS purpose.

“And as Moses lifted up the serpent

in the wilderness,

even so must the Son of man

be lifted up:

15 That whosoever believeth in him

should not perish,

but have eternal life.

16 For God so loved

the world,

that he gave

his only begotten Son,

that whosoever believeth

in him

should not perish,

but have everlasting life.”  John 3:14-16

Jesus came to save “his people from their sins”, but the price was HIS life for our sin!  And this is His message to us who are His followers, we are to lift HIM UP—not self, not programs, not popular fads, not entertainment, but JESUS!

“Now is the judgment of this world:

now shall the prince of this world

be cast out.

32 And I,

if I be lifted up from the earth,

will draw all men unto me.

33 This he said, signifying what death

he should die.”  John 12:31-33

And Jesus should be our only priority, and I will stand with Paul and proclaim it unendingly!

“And I, brethren, when I came to you,

came not with excellency of speech

or of wisdom,

declaring unto you the testimony of God.

2 For I determined not to know any thing

among you,

save Jesus Christ,

and him crucified.

…5 That your faith should not stand

in the wisdom of men,

but in the power of God.”   1 Corinthians 2:1-2, 5

My prayer for each of us, is that we will see Jesus Christ clearly and trust to His Word to do HIS work!  We don’t have to compromise to do God’s work.  Even as Jesus said, may we be faithful in doing The Father’s work!

“But he said unto them,

I have meat to eat that ye know not of.

33 Therefore said the disciples one to another,

Hath any man brought him ought to eat?

34 Jesus saith unto them,

My meat is to do the will

of him that sent me,

and to finish

 his work.”  John 4:32-34

May it ever be!  Amen and Amen!!!

His Grace Reaches Me??? Bible Ballistics: Vol. 14 No. 11

Bible Ballistics: Vol. 14 No. 11        His Grace Reaches Me???

I love the old songs, and there is one that is a special message to my heart, and it resounds with truth—deep truth—written by Augustus Toplady in 1763.  How could such an old song still be pertinent?  Because the good news of the Gospel hasn’t changed!  Never has, never will!

Rock Of Ages  (Augustus Toplady 1763)

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy riven side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Cleanse me from its guilt and power.

Not the labour of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Saviour, or I die!

While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgement throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

I love the third verse and the simplicity of its message:

“Nothing in my hand I bring,

Simply to Thy cross I cling…”

Our hope is in the sufficiency of God’s grace that is full and powerful enough to save us from sin.

“Be it known unto you all,

and to all the people of Israel,

that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,

whom ye crucified,

whom God raised from the dead,

even by him doth this man stand here

before you whole.

11 This is the stone

which was set at nought of you builders,

which is become

the head of the corner.

12 Neither is there salvation in any other:

for there is none other name under heaven

given among men,

whereby we must be saved.”  Acts 4:10-12

This precious ‘corner stone’ is Jesus and He came that we might have life—real life in and through HIM!  Peter who was speaking in the account above, to answer the opposition there, also mentioned this ‘corner stone’ in his first Epistle to the scattered believers.

“Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture,

Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone,

elect,

precious:

and he that believeth on him

shall not be confounded.

7 Unto you therefore which believe

he is precious:

but unto them which be disobedient,

the stone which the builders disallowed,

the same is made the head of the corner,

8 And a stone of stumbling,

and a rock of offence,

even to them which stumble

at the word,

being disobedient:

whereunto also they were appointed.”  1 Peter 2:6-8

I am so grateful that no matter where I am, or what is going on around me (or around those that I love), I have confidence in the truth that I can always “simply to Thy cross I cling”!  Jesus IS my all-in-all!

“For in him dwelleth all the fulness

of the Godhead bodily.

10 And ye are complete

in him,

which is the head of all principality

and power:”   Colossians 2:9-10

And another part of the letter that Paul wrote to the Colossians, reminds us how to look to HIM in all things, because HE is the One who sustains all things.  But before we look at the Colossians passage, we can see HIS power, grace and provision in Hebrews.

“God,

who at sundry times

and in divers manners

spake in time past

unto the fathers

by the prophets,

2 Hath in these last days spoken

unto us

by his Son,

whom he hath appointed heir

of all things,

by whom also he made the worlds;

3 Who being the brightness

of his glory,

and the express image

of his person,

and upholding all things

by the word of his power,

when he had by himself

purged our sins,

sat down

on the right hand

of the Majesty on high;”   Hebrews 1:1-3

Jesus is God’s final Word; and the book of the Revelation is the “unveiling” of all that God will accomplish through “His only begotten Son”!  Jesus is the creator, the sustainer, the redeemer, the very One who IS/WAS the substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for our sin—yours and mine!  Oh, how grateful I am for His unfailing grace—His all-sufficient grace—His supreme sovereign control—through which we can have victory in our daily lives.  Oh, how grateful I am that HIS grace reached down for me, saving and delivering me from my own sin, doing HIS continual work of that grace in me—conforming you and me  into the “image of His son” (Romans 8:28-29, in fact the whole chapter is an amazing word picture of all that we have in HIS amazing grace!). Now let’s take a look at Colossians 3 and see what this amazing grace looks like working through our hands, our feet, and our mouth—yes, you and I who have His Spirit within!

“Lie not one to another,

seeing that ye have put off the old man

with his deeds;

10 And have put on the new man,

which is renewed in knowledge

after the image of him

that created him:

11 Where there is neither Greek

nor Jew,

circumcision

nor uncircumcision,

Barbarian,

Scythian,

bond

nor free:

but Christ is all,

and in all.

12 Put on therefore,

as the elect of God,

holy and beloved,

bowels of mercies,

kindness,

humbleness of mind,

meekness,

longsuffering;

13 Forbearing one another,

and forgiving one another,

if any man have a quarrel

against any:

even as Christ forgave you,

so also do ye.

14 And above all these things

put on charity,

which is the bond of perfectness.

15 And let the peace of God

rule in your hearts,

to the which also ye are called

in one body;

and be ye thankful.

16 Let the word of Christ

dwell in you richly

in all wisdom;

teaching

and admonishing

one another

in psalms

and hymns

and spiritual songs,

singing with grace

in your hearts

to the Lord.

17 And whatsoever ye do

in word

or deed,

do all in the name of the Lord Jesus,

giving thanks to God

and the Father by him.”   Colossians 3:9-17

And all this by our Lord’s grace and power which we received.

“As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord,

so walk ye in him:

7 Rooted and built up in him,

and stablished in the faith,

as ye have been taught,

abounding therein

with thanksgiving.”   Colossians 2:6-7

May we ever walk “in him”, remembering who we are, all because of whose we are; all because of His far-reaching, out-reaching grace that brings abundant life!  Amen and Amen!

“The thief cometh not,

but for to steal,

and to kill,

and to destroy:

I am come that they might have life,

and that they might have it

more abundantly.”  John 10:10. Amen!

Christmas Is What??? Bible Ballistics: Vol. 12 No. 16

1 Corinthians 15:3-5, Acts 16:29-32, Acts 2:22-24, Acts 4:10-12, Christmas IS?, Colossians 1:12-14, Do YOU Know HIM?, Ephesians 2:1-7, Ephesians 2:8-10, Following Jesus, Hebrews 2:14-18, JESUS, John 1:29, John 3:3-21, Matthew 1:21, Romans 2:23, Romans 6:23

Bible Ballistics: Vol. 12 No.16 Christmas Is What???

I love the glitter, and sparkle of the Christmas lights as much as any little tyke, and the joy and excitement in the eyes of the children (and adults!), as well as the goodies, the smiles and the opportunities to share the gospel that we have during this time of year, seemingly more than any other. Yet, we must be aware that in our world, the majority of people who celebrate the “season” know nothing of the “reason for the season”! Jesus has been relegated to some peripheral part of the ‘holiday’ without any significant importance to the “season”! We have come so far that I read some time ago of a person who was walking through a mall that had allowed a Christian nativity display to be put up and those who sponsored it were singing Christmas Carols, a couple was overheard walking by the display saying, “Would you look at that, those ‘Christians’ are even horning in on ‘Christmas’ now!” Sad but that is where our culture is!

So I’d like to spend a bit of time today rehearsing the truth of the reason that we ought to celebrate—and while the gifts, the lights, the parties, the Christmas programs and musicals, are most enjoyable, they are not the focus of what genuine believers in Jesus celebrate. We have the greatest gift that was ever given to mankind to celebrate!

“And she shall bring forth a son,

and thou shalt call his name JESUS:

for he shall save his people

from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

Joseph was given the significant purpose of the Messiah who Mary was carrying—she would bring forth the God-Man-Savior, who would save the world through His sacrifice on the cross of Calvary! All because God loved us then—and He loves us now–providing the One Way for us to be reconciled and redeemed to Himself (bought back from the curse of sin—which Adam chose for us all, see Genesis 3) to receive the intimate relationship, fellowship, and oneness with God Almighty that only Jesus can give to those who come to Him in repentance and faith in HIS saving, substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for sin—mine and yours! How? By the blood of Jesus, that’s how!

“Be it known unto you all,

and to all the people of Israel,

that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,

whom ye crucified,

whom God raised from the dead,

even by him

doth this man stand here before you

whole.

11 This is the stone which was set at nought

of you builders,

which is become the head

of the corner.

12 Neither is there salvation in any other:

for there is none other name

under heaven

given among men,

whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:10-12

It’s HIS name, the God-Man-Savior, Jesus that we celebrate—HIS coming that we might have real “life, and that they might have it more abundantly”! And that, my friends, is what we celebrate—His arrival on planet earth to “save his people from their sins”, and while sin is the issue; Jesus is the solution/cure for sin.

“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith,

Behold the Lamb of God,

which taketh away

the sin of the world.” John 1:29

John goes on in the the account of Nicodemus’ visit to Jesus in chapter 3, to give us Jesus’ own testimony!

“3 Jesus answered and said unto him,

Verily, verily, I say unto thee,

Except a man be born again,

he cannot see the kingdom of God……..

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent

in the wilderness,

even so must the Son of man

be lifted up:

15 That whosoever believeth in him

should not perish,

but have eternal life.

16 For God so loved the world,

that he gave

his only begotten Son,

that whosoever believeth in him

should not perish,

but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not his Son into the world

to condemn the world;

but that the world

through him

might be saved.

18 He that believeth on him

is not condemned:

but he that believeth not

is condemned already,

because he hath not believed

in the name

of the only begotten

Son of God.

19 And this is the condemnation,

that light is come into the world,

and men loved darkness

rather than light,

because their deeds were evil.

20 For every one that doeth evil

hateth the light,

neither cometh to the light,

lest his deeds should be reproved.

21 But he that doeth truth

cometh to the light,

that his deeds may be made manifest,

that they are wrought in God.”   John 3:3 & 14-2

When we belong to Jesus by faith, we do His works!

“For by grace are ye saved

through faith;

and that not of yourselves:

it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works,

lest any man should boast.

10 For we are his workmanship,

created in Christ Jesus

unto good works,

which God hath

before ordained

that we should walk

in them.”   Ephesians 2:8-10

This is why Jesus came—for you and me—to save us from our sins, and equip us for HIS good works, that others might come to HIM!

“For I delivered unto you first of all

that which I also received,

how that Christ died

for our sins

according to the scriptures;

4 And that he was buried,

and that he rose again

the third day

according to the scriptures:

5 And that he was seen of Cephas,

then of the twelve:” 1 Corinthians 15:3-5

Jesus came as a precious human baby—born a King—yet not born in a palace, but in a stable, and placed in a manger, a feeding trough in a barn/stable that sheltered Mary as she delivered the Messiah, The Savior of the world! The gift that Jesus told Nicodemus of “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son”, was this tiny baby whom we celebrate at Christmas time! But don’t leave the Savior in the manger—He grew into a man who willingly laid down His life that we might be saved by His sacrifice.

“Ye men of Israel, hear these words;

Jesus of Nazareth,

a man approved of God

among you by miracles

and wonders

and signs,

which God did by him

in the midst of you,

as ye yourselves also know:

23 Him, being delivered

by the determinate counsel

and foreknowledge of God,

ye have taken,

and by wicked hands

have crucified

and slain:

24 Whom God hath raised up,

having loosed the pains of death:

because it was not possible

that he should be holden of it.”  Acts 2:22-24

God sent “His only begotten Son” not to stay a ‘babe in the manger’ but to be the Savior of the world—to all who will believe in Him! Jesus came because men have a sin problem and only His perfect sacrifice would provide the means for us to be redeemed to God—redeemed from the death and darkness of sin and brought into God’s kingdom by HIS blood—the blood that HE was born to shed for your sin and mine.

“For all have sinned,

and come short

of the glory of God;” Romans 3:23

“For the wages of sin is death;

but the gift of God is eternal life

through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23

While Christmas is about the babe in the manger, HE didn’t stay in the manger, He grew into the perfect, sinless sacrifice that was the only solution for man’s lostness—for man’s salvation. He came to deliver us from darkness into the “kingdom of His dear son”!

“Giving thanks unto the Father,

    which hath made us meet

       to be partakers

              of the inheritance

                      of the saints in light:

           13 Who hath delivered us

                      from the power of darkness,

           and hath translated us

              into the kingdom

                      of his dear Son:

14 In whom we have redemption

                                    through his blood,

even the forgiveness of sins:”    Colossians 1:12-14

We who were lost are now “born…of God” (See John 1:12-14), forgiven, and “translated….into the kingdom” of Jesus! Praise God for that “tiny little baby” who came to die for you and me!

“And you hath he quickened,

who were dead in trespasses

and sins;

2 Wherein in time past ye walked

according to the course

of this world,

according to the prince

of the power of the air,

the spirit that now worketh

in the children

of disobedience:

3 Among whom also

we all had our conversation

in times past

in the lusts of our flesh,

fulfilling the desires

of the flesh

and of the mind;

and were by nature

the children of wrath,

even as others.

4 But God,

who is rich in mercy,

for his great love

wherewith he loved us,

5 Even when we were dead

in sins,

hath quickened us together

with Christ,

(by grace ye are saved;)

6 And hath raised us up together,

and made us sit together

in heavenly places

in Christ Jesus:

7 That in the ages to come

he might shew the exceeding riches

of his grace

in his kindness toward us

through Christ Jesus.”     Ephesians 2:1-7

And that my friends IS Christmas—quickened (made alive) in Jesus, the soon-coming King of all, He who took on flesh and blood to be God’s sacrifice for my salvation and yours. What will you do with the babe? Will you trust to His saving sacrifice for you, or leave Him in a manger and miss His Gift to you? He left heaven so you could live with Him there—don’t miss the salvation and power for living that He gives to those who will come to Him! He has never failed me in all the years that I have walked with Him—and you too will find Him a faithful Redeemer!

“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers

of flesh and blood,

he also himself likewise

took part of the same;

that through death

he might destroy him that had the power

of death,

that is, the devil;

15 And deliver them who through

fear of death

were all their lifetime

subject to bondage.

16 For verily he took not on him

the nature of angels;

but he took on him

the seed of Abraham.

17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him

to be made like unto his brethren,

that he might be a merciful

and faithful high priest

in things pertaining to God,

to make reconciliation

for the sins of the people.

18 For in that he himself

hath suffered being tempted,

he is able to succour

them that are tempted.” Hebrews 2:14-18

The important question of Christmas and every season is, “Do YOU know Jesus?” If you do know Him, then praise Him, and keep Him on the throne of your life every day of the year. If you don’t know Him, you can, by simply recognizing your own sin—that you have a problem you can’t fix, yet Jesus died to fix it and give you life—and then give HIM your life in repentance from your sin, and faith in His sacrifice for you.

“Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,

30 And brought them out, and said,

Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

31 And they said,

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ,

and thou shalt be saved,

and thy house.

32 And they spake unto him

the word of the Lord,

and to all that were in his house.”   Acts 16:29-32

May you truly know the “Christ” of Christmas and celebrate HIS wonderful gift to us—JESUS, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS”!

Amen and Amen!
