Contentment Or Greed??? A Word from THE WORD!!! #185

We live in a “grab it while you can” world, and it doesn’t even matter what you’re talking about; if I see it, if I want it, then I am “entitled” to it!  As I used to hear when I was young, “Taint necessarily so!”  Not good grammar but you get the point.  We have created at least two generations who have been brought up with this mentality, and we have forgotten that scripture says different, but then we have written scripture off as “fairy tales” rather than the truth of God!  It breaks my heart, so I simply want to share some truth from God’s Word that may remind us to reevaluate our ideas, our mindset, and our attitude toward material gain—or you could say material greed!

Paul warned his son-in-the-ministry to beware of the dangers of the “pursuit” of wealth rather than the “pursuit” of godliness.  While this is a bit of a lengthy passage, I pray that it will call us all to reassess our focus, our desires, and our stewardship, especially toward our Lord.

“If any man teach otherwise,

and consent not to wholesome words,

even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ,

and to the doctrine which is according

to godliness;

4 He is proud,

knowing nothing,

but doting about questions

and strifes of words,

whereof cometh

envy,

strife,

railings,

evil surmisings,

5 Perverse disputings

of men of corrupt minds,

and destitute of the truth,

supposing that gain is godliness:

from such withdraw thyself.

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

7 For we brought nothing into this world,

and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8 And having food and raiment

let us be therewith content.

9 But they that will be rich

fall into temptation

and a snare,

and into many foolish and hurtful lusts,

which drown men in destruction

and perdition.

10 For the love of money is the root of all evil:

which while some coveted after,

they have erred from the faith,

and pierced themselves through

with many sorrows.

11 But thou, O man of God,

flee these things;

and follow after

righteousness,

godliness,

faith,

love,

patience,

meekness.”  1 Timothy 6:3-11

What is greed? Not just wanting what we don’t have, we can have desires that aren’t greed, but appreciation and desire to have beautiful things around us; but greed is setting up our desires as the “prime directive”, or in biblical terms, “idolatry”—making “my desires” being fulfilled the great goal and pursuit of our lives (and remember Paul didn’t say that money was evil, but “the love of money”—be careful what steals your “love”).  And often once we get it, we find that “all that glitters is not gold” (from William Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice)!  For one of the saddest episodes in all of scripture, we can look to the story of Tamar, Absalom, and Amnon in 2 Samuel 13.  I would encourage you to spend some time in this story, for it contains some important lessons that we can all learn from.

Paul also wrote some things in regard to possessions and our regard for them—people, places, or things!  And in light of eternity and the fact that we will leave all of this world’s goods behind, it would seem that our focus ought to be heavenward and laying up treasure in heaven rather than totally focused on earthly things.

“When Christ, who is our life, shall appear,

then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth;

fornication,

uncleanness,

inordinate affection,

evil concupiscence,

and covetousness, which is idolatry:

6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God

cometh on the children of disobedience:

7 In the which ye also walked some time,

when ye lived in them.” Colossians 3:4-7

The new life in Jesus is not to be a match to the life we lived in the flesh—as Paul also told the Galatians we are called to “walk in the Spirit…not the flesh”.  I just want to share some other scriptures for you to consider.  My words mean little without God’s own words to rely on, and base our life on.

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about

with so great a cloud of witnesses,

let us lay aside every weight,

and the sin which doth so easily beset us,

and let us run with patience

the race that is set before us,

2 Looking unto Jesus

the author and finisher of our faith;

who for the joy that was set before him

endured the cross,

despising the shame,

and is set down

at the right hand of the throne of God.”                   Hebrews 12:1-2

And Jesus’ own admonition to us to be heavenly minded rather than earth bound, keeping our eyes on Jesus not our flesh, greed or earthly pleasures, and yes, there is “pleasure in sin for a season”—but that season is short-lived and the bill will come due, and we will never find it agreeable, for “sin will take you farther than you wanted to go, keep you longer than you wanted to stay, and cost you more than you wanted to pay” (attributed to R. Zacharias).

“Lay not up for yourselves

treasures upon earth,

where moth and rust

doth corrupt,

and where thieves

break through and steal:

20 But lay up for yourselves

treasures in heaven,

where neither moth nor rust

doth corrupt,

and where thieves

do not break through nor steal:

21 For where your treasure is,

there will your heart be also.”  Matthew 6:19-21

So where’s your heart?  May we remember Paul’s simple words to Timothy:

       “But godliness with contentment is great gain.”

Amen and Amen!!!

How Fast Are You Going???  A Word from THE WORD!!!  #25

As I just sat down after watering my flowers before the temperatures soar, I can’t help but thank God for HIS amazing grace, mercy, and love towards us. It’s so easy (muchly because Satan is always nudging that jealousy and discontent button when we see our friends and loved ones in cooler places—in less stressful situations than we are in—doing things we’d like to do, but can’t—you fill in the blank) to grovel in discontent when God calls us to exercise the fruit (no ‘s’) of The Spirit not just once a week as a ‘workout’, but moment by moment as we walk through each day; be it in the heat, in the sorrow of loss, in concern over economic issues, or just the demands of ‘LIFE’!  It’s not an easy task, but it is a doable way of life through Jesus!

“But godliness

with contentment

is great gain.

7 For we brought nothing into this world,

and it is certain

we can carry nothing out.

8 And having food and raiment

let us be therewith content.

9 But they that will be rich

fall into temptation

and a snare,

and into many foolish and hurtful lusts,

which drown men

in destruction

and perdition.

10 For the love of money

is the root of all evil:

which while some coveted after,

they have erred from the faith,

and pierced themselves through

with many sorrows.

11 But thou, O man of God,

flee these things;

and follow after

righteousness,

godliness,

faith,

love,

patience,

meekness.”  1 Timothy 6:6-11

And as Paul put so aptly in many ways and places, I want us to ponder all the things that we speed through rather than taking each moment as God leads, directs, prompts, and directs; determining not to be rushed by the enemy of our souls.

“I can do all things

through Christ

which strengtheneth me.”  Philippians 4:13

“But my God shall supply

all your need

according to his riches in glory

by Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4:19

“Abide in me,

and I in you.

As the branch cannot bear fruit

of itself,

except it abide in the vine;

no more can ye,

except ye abide in me.

5 I am the vine,

ye are the branches:

He that abideth in me,

and I in him,

the same bringeth forth much fruit:

for without me

ye can do nothing.”  John 15:1-5

Also, in my opinion, one of the most neglected passages of Paul’s today; for instead of “name it and claim it”, God responded to Paul’s prayer with “my grace is sufficient”!  Remember, “not my will but thine by done….”!

“And lest I should be exalted above measure

through the abundance of the revelations,

there was given to me a thorn in the flesh,

the messenger of Satan

to buffet me,

lest I should be exalted

above measure.

8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice,

that it might depart from me.

9 And he said unto me,

My grace is sufficient for thee:

for my strength is made perfect in weakness.

Most gladly therefore will I rather glory

in my infirmities,

that the power of Christ

may rest upon me.

10 Therefore I take pleasure

in infirmities,

in reproaches,

in necessities,

in persecutions,

in distresses

for Christ’s sake:

for when I am weak,

then am I strong.”  2 Corinthians 12:7-10

Is God’s grace sufficient for you and me?  We can find power to be spiritually successful in JESUS’ power and the work of The Holy Spirit producing the “Fruit of The Spirit” working in and through us, as we yield to HIS work, and HIS power in all we do “Moment by Moment”—no matter the circumstances!!!

“But the fruit of the Spirit is

love,

joy,

peace,

longsuffering,

gentleness,

goodness,

faith,

23 Meekness,

temperance:

against such there is no law.”  Galatians 5:22-23

In closing, here’s a great old Hymn that says it way better than I can, I pray that it will encourage you today and point your heart and mind toward Jesus—every moment of every day!  Amen!!!

Moment By Moment by Daniel W. Whittle

1 Dying with Jesus, by death reckoned mine;
Living with Jesus, a new life divine;
Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine,
Moment by moment, O Lord, I am thine.

Refrain:
Moment by moment I’m kept in his love;
Moment by moment I’ve life from above;
Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine;
Moment by moment, O Lord, I am thine.

2 Never a trial that he is not there,
Never a burden that he doth not bear,
Never a sorrow that he doth not share,
Moment by moment, I’m under his care. [Refrain]

3 Never a weakness that he doth not feel,
Never a sickness that he cannot heal;
Moment by moment, in woe or in weal,
Jesus, my Savior, abides with me still. [Refrain]

Amen and Amen!!!

Bible Ballistics: BBs #714   Why Here? Why Now? Why Me?

I would like to share some thoughts with you this morning about God’s faithfulness and His totally trustworthy sovereignty!  We’ve all asked these questions at various time—particularly “Why Me?”!  But scripture assures us that if we will learn to depend fully on our God, our Lord and Savior, we will walk in victory; even when we don’t understand we can take Jesus at HIS Word, for no matter where, or when trials come, we are NEVER alone!  So, let’s start there, and remember ‘conversation’ is a reference to ‘life-style’ not just our speech!

“Let your conversation

be without covetousness;

and be content

with such things as ye have:

for he hath said,

I will never leave thee,

nor forsake thee.

6 So that we may boldly say,

The Lord is my helper,

and I will not fear

what man shall do unto me.”  Hebrews 13:5-6

Are you walking in contentment or are you allowing the enemy to lead you into disruption, distrust, and subtle dissatisfaction?  When we walk in contentment and the confidence of knowing “our God reigns”, we will find that “peace…..which passeth all understanding”!

“But godliness with contentment

is great gain.

7 For we brought nothing into this world,

and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8 And having food and raiment

let us be therewith content.”  1 Timothy 6:6-8

And while it seems that “contentment” is the antithesis of the American dream, it isn’t and even if it were, it’s what God has called us to!  In fact, discontent is one of the chief factors that drive us into bad situations (by our own bad choices, more often than not!).  Even as Jesus’ message to John in The Revelation, we must consider our ways in light of God’s Word—and to do that we must be IN The Word.

“Blessed is

he that readeth,

and they that hear

the words of this prophecy,

and keep those things

which are written therein:

for the time is at hand.”   Revelation 1:3

The blessing isn’t promised to those who simply read or peruse the ‘words’ that are written in this message, but to those who read it—hear it (regarding what they hear)—and keep it!  We must heed all of God’s Word and pursue our relationship with Jesus, knowing that like Esther we are here for God’s purposes!

“and who knoweth

whether thou art come to the kingdom

for such a time as this?”  Esther 4:4b

And, my dear friends, if there ever were “such a time as this”—it is now, and we must, absolutely must, “stand fast in the evil day” which is upon us!  But stand in God’s power, wisdom and ways not our own.

“Then he answered and spake unto me, saying,

This is the word of the LORD

unto Zerubbabel, saying,

Not by might,

nor by power,

but by my spirit,

saith the LORD of hosts.”   Zechariah 4:6

It’s the how and why of Paul’s encouragement to the Philippian believers.  It’s how we live, walk and have victory in all we do!

“I can do all things

through Christ

which strengtheneth me…

… 19 But my God

shall supply all your need

according to his riches in glory

by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:13 & 19

Are you wrestling with blame, confusion, uncertainty, or just plain fear of the future?  God has a better way for you!

“For God hath not given us

the spirit of fear;

but of power,

and of love,

and of a sound mind.”  2 Timothy 1:7

Don’t succumb to the enemy of your soul, but stand fast in the truth that truly, “our God reigns”!  And Satan is a defeated foe!  Jeremiah is often referred to as the ‘weeping prophet’ because his task was difficult and God told him beforehand that it would be—but God supplied his every need and his burden for truth and God’s people was beyond comprehension, and perhaps these words of Jeremiah’s that mean so much to me in making it through some difficult struggles will also speak to you today.

“Therefore thus saith the LORD,

If thou return,

then will I bring thee again,

and thou shalt stand before me:

and if thou take forth the precious

from the vile,

thou shalt be as my mouth:

let them return unto thee;

but return not thou unto them.

20 And I will make thee unto this people

a fenced brasen wall:

and they shall fight against thee,

but they shall not prevail against thee:

for I am with thee

to save thee

and to deliver thee,

saith the LORD.

21 And I will deliver thee

out of the hand of the wicked,

and I will redeem thee

out of the hand of the terrible.”   Jeremiah 15:19-21

Jesus gave us our marching orders and HIS way is always best, even when the way looks long and dreary (what Oswald Chambers refers to as “the mundane”), or even scary– our God is ever by us, before us, behind us and is causing our steps to glorify HIM!

“Having your conversation honest

among the Gentiles:

that, whereas they speak against you

as evildoers,

they may by your good works,

which they shall behold,

glorify God

in the day of visitation.”  1 Peter 2:12

Jesus’ own words direct our hearts, steps, and our choices:

“Therefore take no thought, saying,

What shall we eat?

or, What shall we drink?

or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32 (For after all these things

do the Gentiles seek:)

for your heavenly Father knoweth

that ye have need of all these things.

33 But seek ye first

the kingdom of God,

and his righteousness;

and all these things

shall be added unto you.

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow:

for the morrow shall take thought

for the things of itself.

Sufficient unto the day

is the evil thereof.”  Matthew 6:31-34

In closing, what do we think and do?  We guard our hearts and minds from the enemy of our souls; and think on the things of God, as someone once said— “Check the enemy at the door of your mind!”  Don’t let the “Father of lies” deceive you into less than GOD has for you!

“Be careful for nothing;

but in every thing

by prayer

and supplication

with thanksgiving

let your requests be made known

unto God.

7 And the peace of God,

which passeth all understanding,

shall keep your hearts and minds

through Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brethren,

whatsoever things are true,

whatsoever things are honest,

whatsoever things are just,

whatsoever things are pure,

whatsoever things are lovely,

whatsoever things are of good report;

if there be any virtue,

and if there be any praise,

think on these things.”  Philippians 4:6-8

I pray that we will all march forward to victory in Jesus (that would make a great song!) each day, knowing that:

“And a voice came out of the throne, saying,

Praise our God,

all ye his servants,

and ye that fear him,

both small

and great.

6 And I heard as it were the voice

of a great multitude,

and as the voice of many waters,

and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying,

Alleluia:

for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

7 Let us be glad

and rejoice,

and give honour to him….”   Revelation 19:5-7a

May you have a blessed week and keep your eyes fixed on the prize—Jesus.  Don’t let the bend in the road distract you from God’s love and purposes!

“…God is love…”!

Amen and Amen!!!

Contentment Or Greed??? Bible Ballistics: BBs #511

Bible Ballistics: BBs #511 Contentment Or Greed???

It’s that time of year again—time when people’s attention turns to shopping, and spending and getting and giving, yet it’s so easy to forget the very “One” that we are supposed to be celebrating—Jesus’ incarnation and birth—and be caught up in the glitter, tinsel and greed around us. God calls us to a higher plain, not just at Thanksgiving and Christmas time, but also in our every day living. Yet in a world gone crazy with “designer” stuff—“techno” gizmos—and just more and more and more, we must truly make a conscious effort to keep our heart and mind in check to biblical living. So I’d like to simply share a few words from scripture to help us refocus on the important things; for we will find that the issues which we face today aren’t much different than those which have been around for a long time!!!

“If any man teach otherwise,

and consent not to wholesome words,

even the words

of our Lord Jesus Christ,

and to the doctrine

which is according to godliness;

4 He is proud,

knowing nothing,

but doting about questions

and strifes of words,

whereof cometh envy,

strife,

railings,

evil surmisings,

5 Perverse disputings

of men of corrupt minds,

and destitute of the truth,

supposing that gain is godliness:

from such withdraw thyself.

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.”    1 Timothy 6:6

Paul reminded Timothy that there were those who twist God’s Word then, and he is reminding us that the same is true today! We must be aware and strive to guard our hearts from these things, and focus on “godliness with contentment”, for in God’s eyes that “is great gain”! Yet most of what we see and hear today—especially on any kind of ‘media’—pushes us to get ‘this’ new thing, buy the ‘bigger’ thing, the ‘newer’ thing, or the ‘latest’ version of whatever it is! But God is calling us to contentment! Now there is nothing wrong with ‘new’ things, there’s nothing wrong with having ‘new’ and ‘nice’ “things”—the problem comes when the ‘things’ begin to have us! Then the great green monster of greed will try to move in and take over!

“For the love of money

is the root

of all evil:

which while some coveted after,

they have erred

from the faith,

and pierced themselves through

with many sorrows.

11 But thou,

O man of God,

flee these things;

and follow after

righteousness,

godliness,

faith,

love,

patience,

meekness.” 1 Timothy 6:10-11

Take note here, Paul didn’t say that “money” is the “root of all evil”, but the “love of money” IS! And that is the issue that we must guard our hearts against! It is the issue that will pull our hearts away from The Lord whom we belong to! I pray that you will take some time today and consider what is the “delight” of your heart—contentment in Jesus, or the continual longing for “more things”? May we give our hearts totally to God—and that is a full time work! But it is a work of glory and grace!

“Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth;

fornication,

uncleanness,

inordinate affection,

evil concupiscence,

and covetousness, (Greed)

which is idolatry:”   Colossians 3:5

May we truly seek to receive the words of Jesus?

“And Jesus answered him,

The first of all the commandments is,

Hear, O Israel;

The Lord our God

is one Lord:

30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God

with all thy heart,

and with all thy soul,

and with all thy mind,

and with all thy strength:

this is the first commandment.

31 And the second is like, namely this,

Thou shalt love thy neighbour

as thyself.

There is none other commandment

greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31

 So one of two things—either love will crowd out the greed from our hearts, or we will foster the greed and it will crowd out the love!!! What are you fostering in your heart today?
