I Was? I Am? I Will Be???  A Word from THE WORD!!! #433

The question I would like us to consider today is “who” was I; who am I, who will I be?  Yes, good questions, yet the condition that we must not forget, is to remember that it is all about Jesus!  If I don’t know Him, then my past, present and future will rely mostly on the choices that I make, and the Proverbs tell us how that turns out!  (See Matt. 7:13-14)

“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man,

but the end thereof are the ways of death.”  Proverbs 14:12

If I do know Jesus, if I have come to Him for salvation in repentance and faith, trusting in His substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for my sin—it’s the key–coming to Jesus!  I must first and foremost hear the voice of the precious Holy Spirit who convicts of sin—I must see, hear and receive the truth of my condition—sinner.  As I have often said, only desperate people come to Jesus; desperate in the sense of seeing my own sin, knowing that there is nothing I can do about it, and that only by grace through faith can I become God’s child, coming into HIS kingdom.  How about you?

“He was in the world,

and the world was made by him,

and the world knew him not.

11 He came unto his own,

and his own received him not.

12 But as many as received him,

to them gave he power

to become the sons of God,

even to them that believe on his name:

13 Which were born,

not of blood,

nor of the will of the flesh,

nor of the will of man,

but of God.”  John 1:10-13

 Jesus came to save us from our sin—not just the penalty of our sin, but from our sin.  Paul reminds us that Jesus came to redeem us from sin, not just save us from hell, but to save us from sin—its power, its penalty, and eventually from its very presence!

“I beseech you therefore, brethren,

by the mercies of God,

that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice,

holy,

acceptable unto God,

which is your reasonable service.

2 And be not conformed to this world:

but be ye transformed

by the renewing of your mind,

that ye may prove what is that

good,

and acceptable,

and perfect,

will of God.”  Romans 12:1-2

Paul calls us to live a life yielded to Jesus’ rule in my living—which Paul says is my “reasonable service”, because I have been redeemed and transformed by the work of Calvary—the blood of Jesus which cleanses us from sin!

“If we say that we have fellowship with him,

and walk in darkness,

we lie,

and do not the truth:

7 But if we walk in the light,

as he is in the light,

we have fellowship one with another,

and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son

cleanseth us from all sin.”   1 John 1:6-7

It goes all the way back to the promise to Joseph about who Jesus was!

“And she shall bring forth a son,

and thou shalt call his name JESUS:

for he shall save his people

from their sins.”  Matthew 1:21

Notice that the angel didn’t say “he shall save people from the penalty of sin” (which He does); but his reference was to the truth that Jesus saves us from our sins!  If we claim Jesus’ name and continue to live in sin, something is wrong; and I’m not talking about slipping and falling into a sin, but a continuous life of sin, calls us to question who saved us and from what?  Sin should mark who we were, what we were—not what we are after being redeemed by Jesus’ blood!

Peter calls this to the attention of the recipients of his first letter to the scattered believers, and we need to take note of his admonition to us today!

“As obedient children,

not fashioning yourselves

according to the former lusts

in your ignorance:

15 But as he which hath called you is holy,

so be ye holy

in all manner of conversation;

16 Because it is written,

Be ye holy;

for I am holy.

17 And if ye call on the Father,

who without respect of persons

judgeth according to every man’s work,

pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:

18 Forasmuch as ye know

that ye were not redeemed

with corruptible things,

as silver and gold,

from your vain conversation

received by tradition

from your fathers;

19 But with the precious blood of Christ,

as of a lamb without blemish

and without spot:” 1 Peter 1:14-19

And Peter goes on to remind us of Jesus’ example of holy living in an unholy world—no excuse!

“For what glory is it, if,

when ye be buffeted for your faults,

ye shall take it patiently?

but if,

when ye do well, and suffer for it,

ye take it patiently,

this is acceptable with God.

21 For even hereunto were ye called:

because Christ also suffered for us,

 leaving us an example,

that ye should follow his steps:

22 Who did no sin,

neither was guile found in his mouth:

23 Who, when he was reviled,

reviled not again;

when he suffered,

he threatened not;

but committed himself

to him that judgeth righteously:

24 Who his own self

bare our sins

in his own body

on the tree,

that we, being dead to sins,

should live unto righteousness:

by whose stripes ye were healed.

25 For ye were as sheep going astray;

but are now returned

unto the Shepherd and Bishop

of your souls.”  1 Peter 2:20-25

Jesus left us an amazing standard of faith, obedience and perseverance; Jesus obeyed His father, and we are to do likewise.  We have been called to not only trust our salvation to Jesus, but also to recognize the example that He set before us, knowing that what we were was “sheep going astray”; but we are now “returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls”!  We were strays—but now we are sons of God, born again children of God—all because of the blood that “cleanseth us from all sin…”; and having returned to our shepherd we are called to follow HIM—to be followers of Jesus, that we might show others the way to The Lord—to heaven—to a holy, transformed and redeemed life—those who are called to endure suffering patiently?  Ouch!  We have bought into the lies that Christians are to have blessing without suffering.  We are healed from the disease of sin, not eternal, perpetual healing in this flesh!  Jesus told us we would suffer with Him when we are following HIM!

“If the world hate you,

ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

19 If ye were of the world,

the world would love his own:

but because ye are not of the world,

but I have chosen you

out of the world,

therefore the world hateth you.

20 Remember the word that I said unto you,

The servant is not greater than his lord.

If they have persecuted me,

they will also persecute you;

if they have kept my saying,

they will keep yours also.

21 But all these things will they do unto you

for my name’s sake,

because they know not

him that sent me.”  John 15:18-21

This Jesus, the sinless (See Hebrews 4:15) Son of God, came to die for our sin, and to leave us an example of the cost of aligning ourselves with Him and His Father!  He spoke the truth, and they hated Him without cause (See John 15:25), and He clearly said we will suffer the same for speaking truth, especially when it is an unpopular truth.  So what we see is that when we were without Jesus, we were lost in sin, we had no hope!  But when we come to Jesus, we are among those who have eternal life in this world, life by His power, grace and truth, in eternity in His very presence!  It’s what Jesus said He came to do—knowing it would cost Him His life on Calvary!  What price are we unwilling to pay to honor, thank and serve our Redeemer? Jesus changes what was into what is, and what is into what will be; just what John Newton shared in one of the world’s most beloved songs!  I “once was lost…but now, I’m found…”; and “when we’ve been there ten thousand years…”, we’ll have “no less days to sing God’s praise…”!  (From Amazing Grace, by John Newton).

So, are you ready to turn to Jesus and find new life, and press on to eternal joy? It’s why HE came.  Don’t let the great liar rob you of all that Jesus came to deliver—for YOU!

“I am the door:

by me if any man enter in,

he shall be saved,

and shall go in and out,

and find pasture.

10 The thief cometh not,

but for to steal,

and to kill,

and to destroy:

I am come that they might have life,

and that they might have it more abundantly.

11 I am the good shepherd:

the good shepherd giveth his life

for the sheep.”  John 10:9-11

And HE did!!!  For you and me!!!  It’s your choice, but choose wisely, there is a test!!!

Amen and Amen!!!

Clamor Or Calm??? A Word from THE WORD!!! #383

I must be honest, I am weary of all the clamor going on around us; who we hate, who we don’t hate, who’s right, who’s wrong, what are we supposed to be pursuing?  I would simply like to share a few things that we find in God’s Word, that I pray will help us bring calm to our lives, our hearts and the effect that we have on others.  Jesus didn’t need politics, and we need Jesus instead of anything else!

“These things have I spoken unto you,

being yet present with you.

26 But the Comforter,

which is the Holy Ghost,

whom the Father will send in my name,

he shall teach you all things,

and bring all things to your remembrance,

whatsoever I have said unto you.

27 Peace I leave with you,

my peace I give unto you:

not as the world giveth,

give I unto you.

Let not your heart be troubled,

neither let it be afraid.”  John 14:25-27

Jesus has promised us HIS peace, via the Holy Spirit—The Spirit of God/Jesus which He promised would bring “all things to your remembrance”!  Notice (as I often teach in my classes) that Jesus said The Spirit would bring things to our “Re’membrance”; and if you go back in mind to your childhood grammar classes, hopefully you’ll remember that the small prefix “re” means to ‘do over’—meaning that we must, I repeat must, “member” it first.  We must put The Word in us and then the Holy Spirit will help us to remember things at the appropriate time. While I won’t put it here, if you’ll go back and read Matthew chapter 4 where Jesus encounters the tempter, Satan, He, Jesus, faced and overcame each temptation with scripture telling the enemy, “It Is Written”. Even when Satan used scripture, Jesus brought him back to the actual context of God’s Word!  That is such a good principle and practice for us to apply to our lives today!

I can’t tell you the peace that I have experienced in life by knowing God’s Word—in its context!  It is such a joy and delight to know Jesus through His Word, and to use Jesus’ own words, it is imperative; for we will either be serving ourselves, the enemy of our souls, or The Lord Jesus Christ!  Jesus said it much better than I can.

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth,

where moth and rust

doth corrupt,

and where thieves

break through and steal:

20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,

where neither moth nor rust

doth corrupt,

and where thieves

do not break through nor steal:

21 For where your treasure is,

there will your heart be also.

22 The light of the body is the eye:

if therefore thine eye be single,

thy whole body shall be full of light.

23 But if thine eye be evil,

thy whole body shall be full of darkness.

If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness,

how great is that darkness!

24 No man

can serve two masters:

for either he will hate the one,

and love the other;

or else he will hold to the one,

and despise the other.

Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”  Matthew 6:19-24

We can choose to follow The Master who gives peace, grace, love and wisdom; or we can let the clamor of the world keep us in an upheaval, not knowing which way to turn or whom to believe.  When we know Jesus and what He has said in His Word, we will find an amazing peace that “passeth all understanding” (See Philippians 4:7.)

Let me just say, that scripture isn’t calling us to be negligent of our responsibilities, but He is calling us to have right priorities and be pursuing His kingdom priorities as we faithfully serve God and provide for our own families as He directs.  A couple of passages that direct us in putting God first will never direct us to neglect the physical needs of our family, but we will seek to do it God’s way!

“But when ye pray,

use not vain repetitions,

as the heathen do:

for they think that they shall be heard

for their much speaking.

8 Be not ye therefore like unto them:

for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of,

before ye ask him.

9 After this manner therefore pray ye:

Our Father

which art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy name.

10 Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done

in earth,

as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread…”  Matthew 6:7-11a

Paul had somewhat to say about this also!

“…Let not then your good be evil spoken of:

17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink;

but righteousness,

and peace,

and joy in the Holy Ghost.

18 For he that in these things serveth Christ

is acceptable to God,

and approved of men.”  Romans 14:16b-18

I know I wrestle with these things on occasion, and I just plain forget to keep my eyes on the prize—Jesus!  It is so easy to be distracted with all the clamor around us; with all the things seemingly demanding our time, our focus, and attention—things of the world and not of our Lord Jesus!  It’s one of the reasons we are to keep our eyes “fixed on Jesus”!  Isaiah reminded me of God’s faithful provision not long ago, may we ever remember that our God never fails, and HE has promised to never abandon us!  I encourage you to read the context of this passage from Isaiah.

“And the key of the house of David

will I lay upon his shoulder;

so he shall open,

and none shall shut;

and he shall shut,

and none shall open.

23 And I will fasten him

as a nail in a sure place;

and he shall be for a glorious throne

to his father’s house.”  Isaiah 22:22-23

It’s much like the assurance that God gives to us through the author of the book of Hebrews, knowing that even though God may discipline His own, He will never ever abandon us.

“Let your conversation be without covetousness;

and be content with such things as ye have:

for he hath said,

I will never leave thee,

nor forsake thee.

6 So that we may boldly say,

The Lord is my helper,

and I will not fear

what man shall do unto me.”  Hebrews 13:5-6

Even as the author tells us that we have a great one to run to in our time of need—He never sleeps nor slumbers!

“For we have not an high priest

which cannot be touched

with the feeling of our infirmities;

but was in all points tempted like as we are,

yet without sin.

16 Let us therefore come boldly

unto the throne of grace,

that we may obtain mercy,

and find grace to help

in time of need.”  Hebrews 4:15-16

So, as I bring this post to a close, I want us to consider the call that Peter gives to us to know how to walk right before God in this calm assurance; in the power of Jesus to not be overcome of the crazy clamor all around us, but to be the steadfast servants of our King Jesus—living hope, peace and joy that will lead others to the cross of Him who is The way—The truth—The life!  The only way to God, to heaven and to receive eternal life!  May others see His peace and calm in us—in contrast to the clamor of the world!  Let’s reflect Jesus today!!

“As obedient children,

not fashioning yourselves

according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

15 But as he which hath called you is holy,

so be ye holy

in all manner of conversation;

16 Because it is written,

Be ye holy;

for I am holy.

17 And if ye call on the Father,

who without respect of persons

judgeth according to every man’s work,

pass the time of your sojourning here

in fear:

18 Forasmuch as ye know

that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things,

as silver and gold,

from your vain conversation

received by tradition from your fathers;

19 But with the precious blood of Christ,

as of a lamb without blemish

and without spot:

20 Who verily was foreordained

before the foundation of the world,

but was manifest in these last times

for you,

21 Who by him do believe in God,

that raised him up from the dead,

and gave him glory;

that your faith and hope might be in God.”                         1 Peter 1:14-21

I pray that God’s greatest blessings of peace will fall on you today!  If you need Jesus, please call on Him today— “for by grace ye are saved through faith, not of works, lest any man should boast” (See Ephesians 2:8-10!)

“Therefore being justified by faith,

we have peace with God

through our Lord Jesus Christ:

2 By whom also we have access by faith

into this grace

wherein we stand,

and rejoice

in hope of the glory of God.”  Romans 5:1-2

Amen and Amen!!!

Serve The Lord With Gladness? A Word from THE WORD!!! #376

“Make a joyful noise unto the LORD,

all ye lands.

2 Serve the LORD

with gladness:

come before his presence

with singing.

3 Know ye that the LORD

he is God:

 it is he that hath made us,

 and not we ourselves;

we are his people,

and the sheep of his pasture.

4 Enter into his gates

with thanksgiving,

and into his courts

with praise:

be thankful unto him,

and bless his name.

5 For the LORD is good;

his mercy is everlasting;

and his truth

endureth to all generations.” Psalm 100:1-5

God not only made us, but He also will give the new birth into Jesus Christ The Lord to all who will come to Him in repentance and faith in Jesus’ substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for our sin; we can be “born…of God” (See John 1:11-13) and have eternal life—transforming life.  We can have a change of heart, mind and soul; a change of direction from our own way to God’s way!  Even as Isaiah heard from God.

“And though the Lord

give you the bread of adversity,

and the water of affliction,

yet shall not thy teachers be removed

into a corner any more,

but thine eyes shall see thy teachers:

21 And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying,

This is the way,

walk ye in it,

when ye turn to the right hand,

and when ye turn to the left.”  Isaiah 20:20-21

And even more importantly, Jesus clearly says that HE IS the way; may we walk in His grace, wisdom and truth.

“Jesus saith unto him,

I am

the way,

the truth, and

the life:

no man cometh unto the Father,

but by me.

7 If ye had known me,

ye should have known my Father also:

and from henceforth

ye know him,

and have seen him.”  John 14:6-7

How could they (and us) see The Father?  By knowing Jesus, and Jesus (contrary to what some believe) said clearly that He was, is and ever shall be one with God the Father.  Are you following The One who died for you, The One who Is one with the Father, The One who died for your salvation and mine?

“Jesus answered them,

I told you,

and ye believed not:

the works that I do in my Father’s name,

they bear witness of me.

26 But ye believe not,

because ye are not of my sheep,

as I said unto you.

27 My sheep hear my voice,

and I know them,

and they follow me:

28 And I give unto them eternal life;

and they shall never perish,

neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

29 My Father, which gave them me,

is greater than all;

and no man is able to pluck them

out of my Father’s hand.

30 I and my Father are one.”  John 10:15-30

So, do you belong to the Shepherd?  Are you following Him?  Are you in His hands?  Are you listening to that still small voice and going God’s way or your own?  Are you serving the “Lord with gladness” or sucking on the proverbial lemon?  Are you being a reflection of the glory of Jesus Christ The Lord and Father God by the power of the Holy Spirit, or have you let the world lead you down that “broad way, that leadeth to destruction”? Even those who seemed to be His followers couldn’t always be found ready to stand with Him. (See Matthew 7:14-28)

“What and if ye shall see the Son of man

ascend up where he was before?

63 It is the spirit that quickeneth;

the flesh profiteth nothing:

the words that I speak unto you,

they are spirit,

and they are life.

64 But there are some of you that believe not.

For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were

that believed not, and who should betray him.

65 And he said,

Therefore said I unto you,

that no man can come unto me,

except it were given unto him of my Father.

66 From that time many of his disciples went back,

and walked no more with him.

 67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve,

Will ye also go away?

 68 Then Simon Peter answered him,

Lord, to whom shall we go?

 thou hast the words of eternal life.

69 And we believe and are sure

that thou art that Christ,

the Son of the living God.

70 Jesus answered them,

Have not I chosen you twelve,

and one of you is a devil?”  John 6:62-70

By God’s grace I will praise Him, for HE has saved and delivered me from the penalty of my sin!  How about you?  Will you play church or will you truly “Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.”!!

I pray that you will truly, “Know ye that the LORD he is God”, and that you will serve Him and bow before King Jesus!  You can bow before Him now as your Lord and Savior, or bow before Him later as your judge.  (See Revelation 20:11-15)

“And being found in fashion as a man,

he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death,

even the death of the cross.

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him,

and given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus

every knee should bow,

of things in heaven,

and things in earth,

and things under the earth;

11 And that every tongue should confess

that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.”  Philippians 2:8-11

Amen and Amen!!!
