The Hirelings??? A Word from THE WORD!!! #113

I want to start this article that I had already planned to write with a story from life; but first one of my favorite scripture passages; and I’m sitting here writing and listening to an “old” Cathedrals song, “I Know My Savior IS There”!  How great is our God!!!  And I’m smiling.

“And he that searcheth the hearts

 knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit,

because he maketh intercession for the saints

according to the will of God.

28 And we know that all things

work together for good

to them that love God,

to them who are the called

according to his purpose.

29 For whom he did foreknow,

he also did predestinate

 to be conformed

to the image of his Son,

 that he might be the firstborn

among many brethren.” Romans 8:27-29

This verse came to me as I smiled in the midst of total chaos!  I was about to take a walk before the heat made that imprudent, but I heard the sound of water (not any usual sound) and realized that the drain hose on the running washing machine had popped out (again) but this time I was a bit slow getting it stopped and it not only ran over in the laundry room (which is tile) but it ran into the hall which is wood plank flooring!  So I got the hose back in and started grabbing towels and got the water out of the hall, then kind of kept scooping it back into the laundry room, picking up the soaked towels and getting dry ones!  Well, I got it mostly cleaned up and just kept smiling to myself and thinking about how good our God is!  He knew I didn’t need to take that walk at that particular moment, and because HE was watching over me, I was home to stop the flow and clean up the mess!  How often, I think, we are so busy looking for a great “miracle” that we miss the work of God in our every step!  Yes, I believe in great miracles, but I also have observed that some people are so busy running around looking for “miracles” that they miss the daily, everyday miracles of God’s sweet, timely and growth producing work in the lives of His own (and just FYI, God doesn’t need Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat to do HIS work–in fact I think we often miss HIS work with our obsession over social media of all kinds).  And that is what I want us to consider today–God’s own, and God’s own work in HIS own–as well as the ‘hirelings’ who appear to tend the flock but run at the first sign of danger.  Jesus talked about this!

“Then said Jesus unto them again,

Verily, verily, I say unto you,

I am the door of the sheep.

8 All that ever came before me

are thieves and robbers:

but the sheep did not hear them.

9 I am the door:

by me if any man enter in,

he shall be saved,

and shall go in and out,

and find pasture.

10 The thief cometh not,

but for to steal,

and to kill,

and to destroy:

I am come

that they might have life,

and that they might have it more abundantly.

11 I am the good shepherd:

the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

12 But he that is an hireling,

and not the shepherd,

whose own the sheep are not,

seeth the wolf coming,

and leaveth the sheep,

and fleeth:

and the wolf catcheth them,

and scattereth the sheep.

13 The hireling fleeth,

because he is an hireling,

and careth not for the sheep.

14 I am the good shepherd,

and know my sheep,

and am known of mine.

15 As the Father knoweth me,

even so know I the Father:

and I lay down my life

for the sheep.

16 And other sheep I have,

which are not of this fold:

them also I must bring,

and they shall hear my voice;

and there shall be one fold,

and one shepherd.

17 Therefore doth my Father love me,

 because I lay down my life,

that I might take it again.

18 No man taketh it from me,

but I lay it down of myself.

I have power to lay it down,

and I have power to take it again.

This commandment have I received of my Father.”  John 10:7-18

Jesus wants us to understand that HE IS the “good shepherd” who cares for the sheep–doing always what is best for them; yet there is a ‘hireling’ who will only want to take advantage of the flock!  So much so, that when he sees the “wolf” coming he runs away, leaving the sheep defenseless, because he didn’t care for them!  Oh how much we see this today, hirelings who aren’t real ‘under-shepherds’ of The Lord Jesus Christ, just those who want to live on the sheep, not care for them.  Jesus was The One who would lay down HIS life for all who will come to HIM in repentance and faith in His Substitutionary, Atoning Sacrifice!  The ultimate love for HIS own sheep, those who will hear His voice and heed to HIS call, HIS care, and HIS glory!

The Old Testament prophets said a good bit about this same scenario of “the hireling”, so I’d like us to peruse a couple of these passages and take them to heart!  May we examine our own heart and soul and be sure that we are one of HIS sheep, and that we are walking close enough to Jesus so that we know HIS voice and learn to run from the “wolves”!  Jesus warned us of these:

“Beware of false prophets,

which come to you in sheep’s clothing,

but inwardly they are ravening wolves.”  Matthew 7:15

Ezekiel received a message from The Lord which succinctly describes the “hirelings”!  I know this is a bit lengthy, but I think we need to hear it, and ponder what God says about these ‘hirelings’!

“And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

2 Son of man,

prophesy against the shepherds of Israel,

prophesy, and say unto them,

Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds;

Woe be to the shepherds of Israel

 that do feed themselves!

should not the shepherds

feed the flocks?

3 Ye eat the fat,

and ye clothe you with the wool,

ye kill them that are fed:

but ye feed not the flock.

4 The diseased

have ye not strengthened,

neither have ye healed

that which was sick,

neither have ye bound up

that which was broken,

neither have ye brought again

that which was driven away,

neither have ye sought

that which was lost;

but with force and with cruelty

have ye ruled them.

5 And they were scattered,

because there is no shepherd:

and they became meat

to all the beasts of the field,

when they were scattered.

6 My sheep wandered through all the mountains,

and upon every high hill:

yea, my flock was scattered

upon all the face of the earth,

and none did search or seek after them.

7 Therefore, ye shepherds,

hear the word of the LORD;

8 As I live, saith the Lord GOD,

surely because my flock became a prey,

and my flock became meat to every beast

of the field,

because there was no shepherd,

neither did my shepherds

search for my flock,

but the shepherds

fed themselves,

and fed not my flock;

9 Therefore, O ye shepherds,

hear the word of the LORD;

10 Thus saith the Lord GOD;

Behold, I am against the shepherds;

and I will require my flock at their hand,

and cause them to cease from feeding the flock;

neither shall the shepherds

feed themselves any more;

for I will deliver my flock

from their mouth,

that they may not be meat for them.

11 For thus saith the Lord GOD;

Behold, I,

even I,

will both search my sheep,

and seek them out.” Ezekiel 34:1-11

And just a few words in this same regard from the ‘weeping Prophet’, Jeremiah; one who heeded the word and work of The Lord but was NOT heeded by his people!

“Heal me, O LORD,

and I shall be healed;

save me,

and I shall be saved:

for thou art my praise.

15 Behold, they say unto me,

Where is the word of the LORD?

let it come now.

16 As for me,

I have not hastened from being a pastor

 to follow thee:

neither have I desired the woeful day;

thou knowest:

that which came out of my lips

was right before thee.”  Jeremiah 17:14-16

And another warning from God through Jeremiah to the “pastors” who were ‘hirelings’, oh that we might heed this reminder that in this world “saying so, doesn’t make it so”!  But when God speaks, we better. Heed The Word, and go right back to what Jesus said in John 10–sound familiar!  The Word will interpret The Word if we will but read it, study it, and be willing to heed it in our own lives each day!

“Woe be unto the pastors

that destroy

and scatter the sheep

of my pasture! saith the LORD.

2 Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel

against the pastors that feed my people;

Ye have scattered my flock,

and driven them away,

and have not visited them:

behold, I will visit upon you

the evil of your doings, saith the LORD.

3 And I will gather the remnant of my flock

out of all countries

whither I have driven them,

and will bring them again to their folds;

and they shall be fruitful and increase.

4 And I will set up shepherds over them

which shall feed them:

and they shall fear no more,

nor be dismayed,

neither shall they be lacking,

saith the LORD.

5 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD,

that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch,

and a King shall reign and prosper,

and shall execute judgment

and justice in the earth.

6 In his days Judah shall be saved,

and Israel shall dwell safely:

and this is his name whereby he shall be called,

THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” Jeremiah 23:1-6                         (See 2 Corinthians 5:21)

And Jesus’ message to the church.  May we consider our ways!  Our King is coming soon–will HE find me faithful?

“The Revelation of Jesus Christ,

which God gave unto him,

to shew unto his servants

things which must shortly come to pass;

and he sent and signified it

by his angel

unto his servant John:

2 Who bare record

of the word of God,

and of the testimony of Jesus Christ,

and of all things that he saw.

3 Blessed is he that readeth,

and they that hear the words

of this prophecy,

and keep those things which are written therein:

for the time is at hand.”  Revelation 1:1-3

Yet remember Jesus’ own words–we won’t always be popular when we speak truth.  If people are applauding you, watch out!

“If ye were of the world,

the world would love his own:

but because ye are not of the world,

but I have chosen you out of the world,

therefore the world hateth you.

20 Remember the word that I said unto you,

The servant is not greater than his lord.

If they have persecuted me,

they will also persecute you;

if they have kept my saying,

they will keep yours also.

21 But all these things will they do unto you

for my name’s sake,

because they know not

him that sent me.”  John 15:19-21

Are you listening to Jesus, your shepherd, or the ‘hirelings’?  Open up the true standard–The Bible–and heed what it says to you; then speak the truth “in love”!

Amen and Amen!!!

Let It Rain??? Bible Ballistics: BBs #470

Bible Ballistics: BBs #470 Let It Rain???

You may have noticed that I write a lot about rain; living in Oklahoma will do that to you, for we often experience the lack of rain, a difficult thing to experience. So as it is raining this morning I can’t help but think of the parallel between the physical rain and “spiritual” rain for our heart and soul. God wants us to walk with Him and know Him more intimately, and He provides all we need to grow as we commit ourselves to seek His face continually!

“And it shall come to pass,

if ye shall hearken diligently

unto my commandments

which I command you this day,

to love the LORD your God,

and to serve him

with all your heart

and with all your soul,

14 That I will give you the rain of your land

in his due season,

the first rain

and the latter rain,

that thou mayest gather in thy corn,

and thy wine,

and thine oil.

15 And I will send grass in thy fields

for thy cattle,

that thou mayest eat and be full.

16 Take heed to yourselves,

that your heart be not deceived,

and ye turn aside,

and serve other gods,

and worship them;

17 And then the LORD’S wrath

be kindled against you……. ”     Deuteronomy 11:13-17a

When we acknowledge God as our total source, we will find power and grace for each day, no matter whether it’s “raining on our parade” or the sun is shinning brightly on our way, God is ever at work on our behalf, is we will just open our eyes!

“Every good gift

and every perfect gift

is from above,

and cometh down from the Father of lights,

with whom is no variableness,

neither shadow of turning.” James 1:17

Our responsibility is to keep our focus on Jesus rather than our circumstances or difficulties.

“Trust in the LORD

with all thine heart;

and lean not unto thine own understanding.

6 In all thy ways

acknowledge him,

and he shall direct thy paths.”    Proverbs 3:5-6

It is easy in our world of techno-everything, to think that we are self-sufficient and don’t need anything or anyone, yet living with that mindset is a danger to a ‘fruitful’ life for God. We can choose to focus on the world or we can heed The Word of God and live a life focused on HIM, seeing HIS hand in all things around us.

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about

with so great a cloud of witnesses,

let us lay aside every weight,

and the sin

which doth so easily beset us,

and let us run

with patience

the race that is set

before us,

2 Looking unto Jesus

the author

and finisher

of our faith;

who for the joy that was set before him

endured the cross,

despising the shame,

and is set down at the right hand

of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-2

Jesus went to the cross that we might “have life”, and have it “more abundantly”, yet we must keep “Looking unto Jesus”—our Lord, our Redeemer, our Friend and our soon-coming KING!!! When we take our eyes off of HIM we can be so easily misled, for the enemy of our soul is ever ready to pounce! We must be diligent, staying in tune with The Holy Spirit’s leading in our every step, remembering that we are NOT alone!!!

“Humble yourselves therefore

under the mighty hand of God,

that he may exalt you in due time:

7 Casting all your care upon him;

for he careth for you.

8 Be sober, be vigilant;

because your adversary the devil,

as a roaring lion,

walketh about,

seeking whom he may devour:

9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith,

knowing that the same afflictions

are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.” 1 Peter 5:6-9

Amen!!!

Bible Ballistics: Vol. 11 No. 11 Hand Fed???

I know this is a bit of a strange title for a Bible post, but it just seems to fit what I’d like to share with you today, as we look as Elijah; a powerful and unique prophet of Israel, yet a man of flesh and blood just like you and me, one whom God provided for in unusual ways. Yet Elijah was a man often misunderstood, so let’s begin our consideration of him in the book of James.

“Elias was a man subject to like passions

as we are,

and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain:

and it rained not on the earth

by the space of three years and six months.

18 And he prayed again,

and the heaven gave rain,

and the earth brought forth her fruit.”    James 5:17-18

James calls us to a life of humility, prayer and openness in our lives—not the “ranting and venting” that many are known for on social media—but an openness of our faith and dependence on our Father God, Jesus His Son and the directions and promptings of His Holy Spirit, which He has given to direct our steps from within! In this passage James gives us an example of Elijah (also called Elias in the New Testament) and his life of prayer and dependence on God.

When many people look at this verse they don’t dig deep enough—they read that Elijah prayed and things happened, or didn’t happen—and they often take this as a license to be presumptuous upon God! Many in our culture have twisted God’s Word to make prayer a way of ‘twisting’ God’s arm to get what we want; they have missed the call of our Lord Jesus to have a heart that is ready to “delight thyself also in the Lord…” even as Jesus put it in The Model Prayer:

“Thy kingdom come…..Thy will be done….”

Elijah had a heart after God, but James already knew that, and when we read in this letter “he prayed earnestly that it might not rain”, James knew that Elijah hadn’t been presumptuous, but that he was doing what God told him to do. How about you and I? Have we allowed God to lead and direct our steps, or are we walking our own way?

“And Elijah the Tishbite,

who was of the inhabitants of Gilead,

said unto Ahab,

As the LORD God of Israel liveth,

before whom I stand,

there shall not be dew nor rain these years,

but according to my word.” 1 Kings 17:1

God sent Elijah unto Ahab, the king of Israel (the northern kingdom, known as ‘Israel’, who had a continual string of kings who had refused to obey God for many years); Ahab was the most wicked of kings and you might remember his wife, Jezebel!

“And Ahab made a grove;

and Ahab did more to provoke

the LORD God of Israel to anger

than all the kings of Israel

that were before him.” 1 Kings 16:33

Elijah didn’t come to speak for himself, or to show off his “prayer prowess”, but he came to Ahab at the bidding of God, and relayed the message of God to a wicked king. Note, it wasn’t a message that Ahab or anyone else would have been eager to receive, but Elijah not only prayed, he took the answer, knowing it could cost him his life at the hands of this wicked, evil, idolatrous, un-repentant king!

“And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,

3 Get thee hence,

and turn thee eastward,

and hide thyself by the brook Cherith,

that is before Jordan.

4 And it shall be, that thou shalt drink

of the brook;

and I have commanded the ravens

to feed thee there.

5 So he went and did according unto

the word of the LORD:

for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith,

that is before Jordan.

6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh

in the morning,

and bread and flesh

in the evening;

and he drank of the brook.

7 And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.” 1 Kings 17:2-7

We often miss the fact that while God made provision for Elijah in unusual ways, Elijah was also enduring the drought that God had sent! Yet Elijah pressed on, knowing that his GOD was faithful, and the people needed to hear from God rather than their wicked kings and leaders. God wanted Israel to look to Him and trust Him. While we don’t have time to look at all the things that God did for Elijah, I do want us to look at the provisions that God made; in particular one that even Jesus confirmed.

“And he said, Verily I say unto you,

No prophet is accepted in his own country.

25 But I tell you of a truth,

many widows were in Israel

in the days of Elias,

when the heaven was shut up

three years and six months,

when great famine

was throughout all the land;

26 But unto none of them was Elias sent,

save unto Sarepta,

a city of Sidon,

unto a woman that was a widow.” Luke 4:24-26 (See 1 Kings 17:8-24)

Jesus validated the account of Elijah and the widow of Zarephath/Serepta, knowing that the people as a whole were only interested in what they “saw” and “ate”; like the account of the day after HE fed the five thousand!

“The day following,

when the people which stood on the other side of the sea

saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone; 23 (Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)

24 When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples,

they also took shipping,

and came to Capernaum,

seeking for Jesus.

25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea,

they said unto him,

Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

26 Jesus answered them and said,

Verily, verily, I say unto you,

Ye seek me, not

because ye saw the miracles,

but because ye did eat of the loaves,

and were filled.

27 Labour not for the meat

which perisheth,

but for that meat

which endureth unto everlasting life,

which the Son of man

shall give unto you:

for him hath God the Father sealed.”    John 6:22-27

Much like these people, we get our eyes on the material rather than the spiritual—and Jesus calls us, as well as them, to seek “for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life”! Even as He told the disciples in John 4 as He encountered the ‘woman at the well’.

“But he said unto them,

I have meat to eat

that ye know not of.

33 Therefore said the disciples one to another,

Hath any man brought him ought to eat?

34 Jesus saith unto them,

My meat is to do the will of him

that sent me,

and to finish his work.” John 4:32-34

When we pursue God, He is ever making provision for us and directing our steps. Even as Elijah, so let’s look at one more account of His walk with God, and the other end of the “prayer” which James mentioned.

“And it came to pass after many days,

that the word of the LORD came to Elijah

in the third year,

saying,

Go, shew thyself unto Ahab;

and I will send rain upon the earth.

2 And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria……17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him,

Art thou he that troubleth Israel?v

18 And he answered,

I have not troubled Israel;

but thou,

and thy father’s house,

in that ye have forsaken

the commandments

of the LORD,

and thou hast followed Baalim.

19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table.

20 So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said,

How long halt ye between two opinions?

if the LORD be God,

follow him:

but if Baal,

then follow him.

And the people answered him not a word.”    1 Kings 18:1-2, 17-21

Elijah wasn’t concerned with popularity, but with following and obeying his God, so he called the people together that they might see the hand of God and return to HIM! Most are familiar with the account of Elijah and the prophets of Baal and the challenge to call for a sacrifice to be supernaturally burned up proving who is the “true” God.

“And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice,

that Elijah the prophet came near,

and said,

LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel,

let it be known this day

that thou art God in Israel,

and that I am thy servant,

and that I have done all these things

at thy word.

37 Hear me, O LORD,

hear me,

that this people may know

that thou art the LORD God,

and that thou hast turned

their heart back again.

38 Then the fire of the LORD fell,

and consumed the burnt sacrifice,

and the wood,

and the stones,

and the dust,

and licked up the water that was in the trench.

39 And when all the people saw it,

they fell on their faces:

and they said,

The LORD,

he is the God;

the LORD,

he is the God.” 1 Kings 18:36-39

Did you see the issue? Elijah was following and obeying God, with a purpose of manifesting the glory of God and calling the people back to God Almighty, who loved them! Same now as then—our prayers are to be Spirit led and not flesh led! Yet there is even more to the story! While Elijah had a great victory with God, and the people acknowledged God with their words—the challenge for us is the same today—will we simply ‘speak’ allegiance or will we “be” aligned and devoted to our God! But when we stand with God there will be those who hate us for it—and Elijah was no exception. He prayed and the rain stopped—he prayed again and the rain came—but only at God’s leading, direction and provision.

“And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain. 42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink.

And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel;

and he cast himself down upon the earth,

and put his face between his knees,

43 And said to his servant,

Go up now,

look toward the sea.

And he went up,

and looked,

and said, There is nothing.

And he said,

Go again seven times.

44 And it came to pass at the seventh time,

that he said,

Behold, there ariseth

a little cloud out of the sea,

like a man’s hand.

And he said,

Go up, say unto Ahab,

Prepare thy chariot,

and get thee down,

that the rain stop thee not.

45 And it came to pass in the mean while,

that the heaven was black with clouds

and wind, and there was a great rain.

And Ahab rode,

and went to Jezreel.

46 And the hand of the LORD

was on Elijah;

and he girded up his loins,

and ran before Ahab

to the entrance of Jezreel.”     1 Kings 18:41-46

Elijah prayed, and it rained—but by God’s direction, and provision! Elijah knew whom he served, but the boom was about to be lowered by the enemy! Yet God was there with him even then!

“And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying,

So let the gods do to me,

and more also,

if I make not thy life as

the life of one of them

by to morrow about this time.

3 And when he saw that,

he arose,

and went for his life,

and came to Beersheba,

which belongeth to Judah,

and left his servant there.

4 But he himself went a day’s journey

into the wilderness,

and came and sat down under a juniper tree:

and he requested for himself

that he might die;

and said,

It is enough; now, O LORD,

take away my life;

for I am not better than my fathers.

5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree,

behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him,

Arise and eat.

6 And he looked,

and, behold,

there was a cake baken

on the coals,

and a cruse of water

at his head.

And he did eat and drink,

and laid him down again.

7 And the angel of the LORD came again

the second time,

and touched him,

and said,

Arise and eat;

because the journey is too great

for thee.

8 And he arose,

and did eat and drink,

and went in the strength of that meat

forty days

and forty nights

unto Horeb the mount of God.”    1 Kings 19:1-8

Often times when we see great victories, we will encounter great spiritual warfare (often, before, during and after, it’s why we must put on the “armor of God” each day—see Ephesians 6:10-18) and yet even when it catches us by surprise, our God is always faithful to meet us where we are. There is no rebuke here, just a time of God’s provision for Elijah to be “hand fed” by angels, and given time to sleep and be refreshed; for our God knows that there are things that drain us not only physically, but mentally, emotionally, and zap our strength and stamina. It’s not a sin to “REST”! We all need it, and God will provide if we will but listen to the voice of His Holy Spirit speaking to our hearts and minds!

God gives renewal, as Elijah went on the rest of his journey, he heard from God in a new and vibrant way (and while God sometimes speaks in new ways to us, we aren’t to base our decisions or choices on the spectacular, but on the historic faithfulness of God and HIS Word!)!!! God showed Elijah that HE wasn’t necessarily in the spectacular, but in the simple things from God, which speaks to our hearts!

“And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD.

And, behold, the LORD passed by,

and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD;

but the LORD was not in the wind:

and after the wind an earthquake;

but the LORD was not in the earthquake:

12 And after the earthquake a fire;

but the LORD was not in the fire:

and after the fire a still small voice.

13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it,

that he wrapped his face in his mantle,

and went out,

and stood in the entering in of the cave.

And, behold, there came a voice unto him…..

15 And the LORD said unto him,

Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus:” 1 Kings 19:11-15

Whatever your need—rely on God’s provision today! Simply rely upon HIS faithfulness, stay in His Word, and put on that armor of God each day, and you can be ready for the battles that will come! Remember, God will meet you in those times of need: “Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him”, (Psalms 37:7a)! Amen and Amen!!!

Bible Ballistics: BBs  #384 The Faithful Promisor!!!

As I sit here praising God for the wonderful ‘August’ rain here in Oklahoma, my mind goes to the scripture that God has given to us as a shower of His love, His Spirit and His truth into our lives, if we will but avail ourselves of it. The Word reminds us endlessly that God is our anchor in the storms. And God’s Spirit will open our hearts to receive and understand the truths of The Word. So let’s spend a few minutes together this morning rehearsing God’s goodness as He reveals truth in The Word, and He keeps every promise! (Always practice integrity toward The Word and don’t take specific promises out of their normal, natural context!! There are general promises for all, specific promises for particular individuals/groups, and specific promises for particular times or events. Remember—Context Is King!)

“All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

28 Come unto me,

all ye that labour and are heavy laden,

and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you,

and learn of me;

for I am meek and lowly in heart:

and ye shall find rest

unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy,

and my burden is light.”    Matthew 11:27-30

Jesus calls us to come to Him for every need, and our greatest need is His saving grace! And He has promised to give us rest, in fact total release, from the burden of sin that weighs us down. And He keeps His promises, and we can rest assured of His faithful provision as HE brings us to maturity, to be all that HE has created and gifted us to be.

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” Philippians 1:6

And we can take that confidence with us through every day and every difficulty or trail that we may encounter, and not only for ourselves, but also to share our confidence, hope and encouragement with one another as we go!!!

“Let us draw near

with a true heart

in full assurance of faith,

having our hearts sprinkled

from an evil conscience,

and our bodies washed

with pure water.

23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering;

(for he is faithful that promised😉

24 And let us consider one another

to provoke unto love

and to good works:

25 Not forsaking the assembling

of ourselves together,

as the manner of some is;

but exhorting one another:

and so much the more,

as ye see the day approaching.”    Hebrews 10:22-25

So, take heart today, for faithful is HE that has “promised”!

“In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;” Titus 1:2

Showers Of Blessing!!! Bible Ballistics: BBs #373

Bible Ballistics: BBs  #373    Showers Of Blessing!!!

We have relished in the lovely rains we have been blessed with the last couple of days. Living in Southwestern Oklahoma, you learn to appreciate the rain any time, but especially the summer rains—and a good rain in July or August is an extra blessing. It’s so refreshing to see the puddles and the green vegetation—which we don’t always see here in Oklahoma in July. I am so glad to know that it is our Almighty God, Creator of all things, who sends the blessed showers that bless our land and our hearts.

“Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.” Jeremiah 5:24

Praise The Lord, it is He who sends the rains or restrains them in His times and His will. Are we like those who Jeremiah said refused to acknowledge the total sovereign work of Almighty God? Or are we aware of God’s work around us continually? Do we thank Him for the rain, when it comes, and the dry seasons when they seem to prevail? Are we among those who never give God a thought, and just complain about the weatherman or the government for the conditions and the weather? Should we not rather be those who praise our God and Son The Son, for all the blessings that they shower upon us whether in sunshine or rain?

“Do not err,

my beloved brethren.

17 Every good gift

and every perfect gift

is from above,

and cometh down

from the Father of lights,

with whom is no variableness,

neither shadow of turning.”James 1:16-17

God never changes! He is the creator and sustainer of all things, and it is because of His mercy that we are not consumed, “upholding all things by the word of his power”! (See Hebrews 1:3). Are we praising Him today for the ‘rain’? Are we seeking His will and provision in our lives, or are we so busy ‘doing it ourselves’, that we don’t give Him a thought in the daily events of life? He is always at work around us!

“Jesus Christ

the same yesterday,

and to day,

and for ever.” Hebrews 13:8

And because Jesus/God never changes, we can depend on Him for every need, every moment of every day. How about you? What/Who are you trusting in to take care of your day? We can become so overwhelmed living life that we forget that God is always in control. While He never changes, we tend to change with the wind, rather than to seek God’s face when we are in doubt. He will supply our needs whether they are physical or spiritual—not always in the way that we dictate; but when we learn to truly trust to His care, we will learn to rest in His care. And that is a conscious choice.

“If any of you lack wisdom,

let him ask of God,

that giveth to all men liberally,

and upbraideth not;

and it shall be given him.

6 But let him ask in faith,

nothing wavering.

For he that wavereth

is like a wave of the sea

driven with the wind

and tossed.” James 1:5-6

Don’t let the winds of change shake your confidence in God; instead walk in faith and you will come to know and understand His working in your life. Leave the work on others to Him, and don’t be “driven with the wind and tossed! Don’t join the many today who are being driven and tossed. The Spirit of God will lead us—not drive us.

So spend some time in the presence of this unchangeable God and His Son Jesus Christ. He is the One who sends the “Showers Of Blessing” to our soul and to our land! Only HE can. It may be the ‘early’ rain or it may be the ‘latter’ rain—but remember, only God can send it in the right time!

“Then shall we know,

if we follow on

to know the LORD:

his going forth is prepared

as the morning;

and he shall come unto us as the rain,

as the latter

and former rain

unto the earth.” Hosea 6:3

Have a blessed day and don’t forget who is sending your ‘early’ rain and your ‘latter’ rain. He wants to bless you today, and grant you perfect rest in HIM!

“Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him:

fret not thyself because of him

who prospereth in his way,

because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

8 Cease from anger,

and forsake wrath:

fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.”     Psalm 37:7-8
