Christmas Fortnight Day 8   A Word from THE WORD!  #420

We’ve looked at ornaments and lights and even the manger.  Let’s look today at ‘trees’.  Not Christmas trees particularly, just trees—let’s stack some “wood”.

Galatians 3:13 says,

“Christ hath redeemed us

from the curse of the law,

being made a curse

for us:

for it is written,

Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree”.

Jesus took our curse— “For the wages of sin is death”!!  (Ro 6:23a)

Deuteronomy 21:23b,

“(for he that is hanged is accursed of God;)

that thy land be not defiled,

which the Lord thy God giveth thee

for an inheritance.”

Jesus became our curse, by hanging on a tree.

Born to die on a tree, for you and for me.

“…He humbled himself

and became obedient unto death,

even the death of the cross.”  Philippians 2:8b.

Romans 15:12,

“…There shall be a root of Jesse,

and he that shall rise

to reign over the Gentiles;

in him shall the Gentiles trust.”

Isaiah 11:1

“And there shall come forth a rod

out of the stem of Jesse,

and a Branch

shall grow out of his roots:”

He came to die for me.

What a gift.

Remember from day 5, that Jesus not only gives light, but that He IS light.  Similarly,

He is the ‘root of Jesse’,

also ‘a rod out of the stem of Jesse’,

and yet He is also a ‘Branch” growing out of the root.

An oxymoron of sorts, Jesus—

creator of trees—

is our tree, He became our curse.

Yet He gives us life when we trust in what HE did on that tree called Calvary.

 He purchased my salvation there.

My ‘Christ’mas tree?

So?  Jesus calls— ‘take up your cross’ and follow ME!!!

The manger is humbling but the cross saves.

Yes, worship the ‘newborn king’,

but don’t stay in the barn—

take up your cross and FOLLOW HIM.

YOUR cross???

YOUR calling???

Will YOU follow HIM?

It’s YOUR choice!!

Be sure and choose wisely, there is a test!!!

“And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.”  Revelation. 22:12.

Amen and Amen!!!

How Close To Calvary??? A Word from THE WORD!!! #404

I want us to consider where we stand in relation to the cross of Jesus; how close is my walk to that cross?  Am I so far away from the import of the cross that it pales in comparison to the focus of my life?   Is Jesus and His work of redemption the thing that holds my heart, or is the world so important to me that I have lost sight of the cross, in other words, how big is my cross?  Am I so far away from it that its import has shrunken into oblivion?  The cross is what Jesus calls us to cling to, as both Matthew and Luke record this discourse for us.

“Then said Jesus unto his disciples,

If any man will come after me,

let him deny himself,

and take up his cross,

and follow me.

25 For whosoever will save his life

shall lose it:

and whosoever will lose his life

for my sake

shall find it.

26 For what is a man profited,

if he shall gain the whole world,

and lose his own soul?

or what shall a man give

in exchange for his soul?”  Matthew 16:24-26

“Saying,

The Son of man must suffer many things,

and be rejected of the elders

and chief priests and scribes,

and be slain,

and be raised the third day.

23 And he said to them all,

If any man will come after me,

let him deny himself,

and take up his cross daily,

and follow me.

24 For whosoever will save his life

shall lose it:

but whosoever will lose his life for my sake,

the same shall save it.

25 For what is a man advantaged,

if he gain the whole world,

and lose himself,

or be cast away?

26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me

and of my words,

of him shall the Son of man be ashamed,

when he shall come in his own glory,

and in his Father’s,

and of the holy angels.”  Luke 9:22-26

What does Jesus tell us?  He says that if we desire to come after Him—to follow Him—we must “deny” ourselves, in other words, put Jesus first over our own desires.  Jesus doesn’t stop there, for He goes on to say that we are to take up our “cross daily”; remembering that the cross is an instrument of death—we are to die to self and live to Jesus Christ The Lord each and every day, following Him!  Not following the fads, or the trends, or the call of our flesh to be popular, wealthy, powerful, or influential in this world.  Paul said it better than I can.

“I am crucified with Christ:

nevertheless I live;

yet not I,

but Christ liveth in me:

and the life which I now live in the flesh

I live by the faith of the Son of God,

who loved me,

and gave himself for me.”  Galatians 2:20

To take up our cross means to die to self and live unto Jesus in all that we do.  Jesus is to be the heartbeat of all we say and do!  Not an easy task, but one that we can do when we walk with The Lord by the power of His Spirit within us.  The indwelling Holy Spirit is the evidence that we belong to Jesus, and in his power, we are enabled to take up our cross and live for Jesus!

“So then they that are in the flesh

cannot please God.

9 But ye are not in the flesh,

but in the Spirit,

if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you.

Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ,

he is none of his.

10 And if Christ be in you,

the body is dead because of sin;

but the Spirit is life

because of righteousness.”  Romans 8:8-10

By Christ’s sacrifice upon the cross He bought our righteousness with His own blood; so that all who come to Him in repentance and faith in His substitutionary, atoning sacrifice receive His righteousness in place of our sin, all by His precious blood!

“To wit, that God was in Christ,

reconciling the world unto himself,

not imputing their trespasses unto them;

and hath committed unto us

the word of reconciliation.

20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ,

as though God did beseech you by us:

we pray you in Christ’s stead,

be ye reconciled to God.

21 For he hath made him to be sin for us,

who knew no sin;

that we might be made the righteousness of God

in him.”  2 Corinthians 5:19-21

We are privileged to know the love of The Son of God, who poured out His own blood to pay for my sin and yours—payment for all who will believe in His sacrificial payment for sin, made on the cross of Calvary!  What have you done with His grace and mercy to pay for your sin?  Do you know Him?  Have you received His grace and mercy in salvation.

“And you,

being dead in your sins

and the uncircumcision of your flesh,

hath he quickened together with him,

having forgiven you all trespasses;

14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances

that was against us,

which was contrary to us,

and took it out of the way,

nailing it to his cross;” Colossians 2:13-14

The question is how close are you to Calvary?  Have you been there for salvation?  If you are saved, are you carrying your cross in faith and devotion to the Lord of all—Jesus Christ the Lord?

In closing, we can choose to walk in the Spirit and not fulfill the lusts of the flesh, we can choose the broad road or the narrow way—destruction or life!  It’s your choice, but choose wisely, there is a test—and the cross and God’s Word are the standard!

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit,

and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit,

and the Spirit against the flesh:

and these are contrary the one to the other:

so that ye cannot do the things that ye would…

25 If we live in the Spirit,

let us also walk in the Spirit.” Portions of Galatians 5:16-25

Amen and Amen!!!

What’s Your Fountain Saying??? A Word from THE WORD!!! #389

As I have observed the things going on around us, not just in America, but throughout the whole world recently.  I see us in what Isaiah said of his people.  We are in need of the coals off of God’s fire to cleanse our lips; not just vulgar talk, which seems to come out of every mouth (especially those of public and popular folks), but the mean-spirited talk, the hate-speech (so-called), the language that demeans, ridicules and calls by unkind names and descriptions.  I want to spend some time today looking at the call of scripture to be a holy people, speaking not only “holy” words, but words of truth that are spoken in love to call the listeners to turn to the cross, not the gutter!

“And one cried unto another, and said,

Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts:

the whole earth is full of his glory.

4 And the posts of the door moved

at the voice of him that cried,

and the house was filled with smoke.

5 Then said I,

Woe is me!

for I am undone;

because I am a man

of unclean lips,

and I dwell in the midst of a people

of unclean lips:

for mine eyes have seen the King,

the LORD of hosts.

6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me,

having a live coal in his hand,

which he had taken with the tongs

from off the altar:

7 And he laid it upon my mouth,

and said,

Lo, this hath touched thy lips;

and thine iniquity is taken away,

and thy sin purged.

8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying,

Whom shall I send,

and who will go for us?

Then said I,

Here am I;

send me.

9 And he said,

Go, and tell this people,

Hear ye indeed,

but understand not;

and see ye indeed,

but perceive not.

10 Make the heart of this people fat,

and make their ears heavy,

and shut their eyes;

lest they see with their eyes,

and hear with their ears,

and understand with their heart,

and convert,

and be healed.

11 Then said I,

Lord, how long?

And he answered,

Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant,

and the houses without man,

and the land be utterly desolate,” Isaiah 6:3-11

I would like to start at verse 5, for until we have seen God for ourselves, we will never see our sin before the “King, the LORD of hosts”; not the earthly king who was on the throne of Judah, but God Almighty The King of all creation—the very creator of all.  And just like Isaiah, until we see God—Father, Jesus The Son, and the Holy Spirit in reality, we will never see our sin!  And until we see our sinful self, we have no need of a Savior!  Isaiah saw himself as he was—a sinner in need of a redeemer; and when he recognized His need, God saved and cleansed him!  And God will do the same for us, but we must see ourselves as sinners before we will ever come to Jesus!  It’s my story and it can be yours, if you’ll but listen for His voice and heed His call to your heart (See Revelation 3:20, where Jesus says He is knocking at the door—don’t miss His call!)!

Let’s not miss the rest, for after the angel touched Isaiah’s lips and cleansed and redeemed him from his sin, he was able to hear God’s call; and hearing the call, he responded with availability to God’s call, even though the message was a hard one.  Read again what God told him: they’ll see you without seeing; they’ll hear you without hearing; they’ll have hearts but won’t comprehend how much I love and care for them.  They had gone so far that God Himself said they were gone so far astray that they wouldn’t even understand the urgency of their own need to, “see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed”!  How close is our world to this state of being?  Oh, how my heart bleeds for people to see, and to hear God’s call to salvation and holiness!

Then there’s the saddest thing to me; Isaiah asked the hard question, “Lord, how long?”; how sad that Isaiah answered the call to preach, even to a people who wouldn’t (for the most part) hear or heed his message from The Lord!  Oh, my, I can’t help but see this attitude in our culture.  Even in the present crises going on all around us, people aren’t really willing to hear God’s Word—either the written Word of God or respond in faith and obedience to the Living Word, Jesus!

But what about those of us who truly belong to Jesus; what are we doing?  What are we saying?  Is our life an example of holiness or have we become so influenced by the world that our testimony reeks of the sinful world rather that our Holy God?  Jesus himself talks about our speech—the indicator of the heart!

“O generation of vipers,

how can ye, being evil,

speak good things?

for out of the abundance of the heart

the mouth speaketh.

35 A good man

out of the good treasure of the heart

bringeth forth good things:

and an evil man

out of the evil treasure

bringeth forth evil things.

36 But I say unto you,

That every idle word that men shall speak,

they shall give account thereof

in the day of judgment.

37 For by thy words

thou shalt be justified,

and by thy words

thou shalt be condemned.”  Matthew 12:34-37

Words do matter!  Jesus said even more about the connection between the mouth and the heart.  Oh, may we take His words to heart and examine our speech, our actions and how we are affecting a lost and dying world.  Are we drawing people to the cross or just blending in?  It’s your choice, but choose wisely, there is a test coming!

“Do not ye yet understand,

that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth

goeth into the belly,

and is cast out into the draught?

18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth

come forth from the heart;

and they defile the man.

19 For out of the heart proceed

evil thoughts,

murders,

adulteries,

fornications,

thefts,

false witness,

blasphemies:

20 These are the things which defile a man:

but to eat with unwashen hands

defileth not a man.”  Matthew 15:17-20

In our vernacular, Jesus makes it clear that it isn’t a matter of cleaning up the outside, but to have a transformed heart, so that Jesus can be seen in us—words, actions and attitudes!  Paul had a few things to say about this, he called us to die to self and live unto Jesus, and to stand up and out for righteousness and not be like the world! I encourage you to take Paul’s message to his “brethren” (and sisters) to heart!  I would encourage you to compare verse 3 below to Romans 8:29, and ask God to reveal to me and you what we are we conforming to?  Jesus or the world?

“I beseech you therefore, brethren,

by the mercies of God,

that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice,

holy,

acceptable unto God,

which is your reasonable service.

2 And be not conformed to this world:

but be ye transformed

by the renewing of your mind,

that ye may prove

what is that good,

and acceptable,

and perfect, will of God.

3 For I say, through the grace given unto me,

to every man that is among you,

not to think of himself more highly

than he ought to think;

but to think

soberly, according as God hath dealt

to every man

the measure of faith.” Romans 12:1-3

In trying to bring this to a close, I want us to consider the message that James gave to believers—are we spewing the trash of the world, or pouring forth the truth of Jesus’ Word, knowing that real faith is proved by our actions (not just our words!).  What’s coming out of your mouth?  What’s in your heart?

“For every kind of beasts, and of birds,

and of serpents, and of things in the sea,

is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

8 But the tongue can no man tame;

it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9 Therewith

bless we God,

even the Father;

and therewith

curse we men,

which are made after the similitude of God.

10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth

blessing and cursing.

My brethren,

these things ought not so to be.

11 Doth a fountain send forth

at the same place

sweet water

and bitter?

12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries?

either a vine, figs?

so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge

among you?

let him shew out of a good conversation

his works with meekness of wisdom.

14 But if ye have

bitter envying and strife in your hearts,

glory not,

and lie not against the truth.

15 This wisdom descendeth not from above,

but is earthly, sensual, devilish.” James 3:7-15

So, the question is this, “Am I/are you full of sweet fresh water of God—the refreshing, redeeming, renewing water of God?  Or have we been so influenced by the world that rather than being conformed to “the image” of The Son of God, we have gone the way of the world and become worldly salt water?  Have we taken the easy road—as Jesus talked about, that “broad way that leadeth to destruction” or have we recognized the Lord of the cross and chosen to walk with Him down the “narrow road…that leadeth unto life”? His way is the only way to God—to heaven—to eternal life with Jesus!  I pray that you will ponder these things; think about Isaiah and consider whether you have seen the Holy God, and bowed before Him in repentance and faith in Jesus’ substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for my sin and yours?  It is truly your choice!  But choose wisely, there is a test!  Paul painted an amazing picture.  You will bow!  The question isn’t “if”; but the question is when will you bow?  Will you bow before Jesus as your Lord and Savior while He is calling?  If you don’t, you will bow before King Jesus, the judge with no opportunity for grace.  I’ll simply close with John’s revealing words.

“And I saw the dead, small and great,

stand before God;

and the books were opened:

and another book was opened,

which is the book of life:

and the dead were judged out of those things

which were written in the books,

according to their works…

14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire.

This is the second death.

15 And whosoever was not found written

in the book of life

was cast into the lake of fire.”                                                Portions of Revelation 20:12-15

Amen and Amen!!!

Where is your name written?  What’s in your heart?  Your mouth?

Take Heart???  A Word from THE WORD!!! #349

Just a word of encouragement for this Friday, for The One who gave HIS all—for our salvation; and not only for our earthly life to have peace, hope and joy, but to remember that even when the trials seem to overwhelm our way, that our Lord, Saviour and King walked this same life and said this was the norm for those who choose to follow Him.  But take heart, as I’m often heard to say, remember, We Win!

“Behold,

the hour cometh,

yea, is now come,

that ye shall be scattered,

every man to his own,

and shall leave me alone:

and yet I am not alone,

because the Father is with me.

33 These things I have spoken unto you,

that in me ye might have peace.

In the world ye shall have tribulation:

but be of good cheer;

I have overcome the world.”  John 16:32-33

One of the best ways to walk in victory is to know The Victor (Jesus) better and better through reading and studying HIS Word!  It saddens my heart that we are so easily distracted from the things of our God, for we can so easily be led astray by that which is trying to replace God, His Word, and the love of His Son!  (and that can be other than ‘bad’ things but can be ‘good’ things that are trying to replace Jesus and His Word.)  We must determine to be wise, discerning and committed to measure all things in this life by God’s Word, not man’s opinions!  And that is almost impossible without knowing God’s Word well, and following its directives, even (if not especially) when the cost is suffering or persecution.  May we follow our Lord rather than the world!  Peter gives us an amazing word of encouragement—may we heed it and press on!

“Honour all men.

Love the brotherhood.

Fear God.

Honour the king.

18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear;

not only to the good and gentle,

but also to the froward.

19 For this is thankworthy,

if a man for conscience toward God

endure grief,

suffering wrongfully.

20 For what glory is it,

if, when ye be buffeted for your faults,

ye shall take it patiently?

but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it,

ye take it patiently,

this is acceptable with God.

21 For even hereunto were ye called:

because Christ also suffered for us,

leaving us an example,

that ye should follow his steps:

22 Who

did no sin,

neither was guile found in his mouth:

23 Who,

when he was reviled,

reviled not again;

when he suffered,

he threatened not;

but committed himself to him

that judgeth righteously:

24 Who his own self

bare our sins in his own body on the tree,

that we,

being dead to sins,

should live unto righteousness

by whose stripes ye were healed.

25 For ye were as sheep going astray;

but are now returned

unto the Shepherd

and Bishop of your souls.”  1 Peter 2:17-25

Jesus has delivered those who come to Him in repentance of sin, and faith in His substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for that (and all) sin.  And not to stir it up, but when Peter says that we are healed by Jesus’ stripes, he is referring to our healing from our disease of sin (see Isaiah 53 and see the picture of this statement), as he goes on to refer to our returning to our creator!

I pray that you will find hope and encouragement to follow the love and example that our Lord Jesus gave to us when He walked that awful road to Calvary for you and me!  May we walk the road He places before us in faith, truth and righteousness!  Remember it is His sacrifice that saves and keeps us!  May you be blessed as you pursue Jesus, His Word and His way before a lost and dying world in need of a Savior—may we be faithful examples of His truth, power and love.

“If we say that we have fellowship with him,

and walk in darkness,

we lie, and do not the truth:

7 But if we walk in the light,

as he is in the light,

we have fellowship one with another,

and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son

cleanseth us from all sin.

 8 If we say that we have no sin,

we deceive ourselves,

and the truth is not in us.”  1 John 1:6-9

Amen and Amen!!!

Following Jesus Into 2025???      A Word from THE WORD!!! #312

As we go into this new year of 2025, I would like to share a most impactful but often overlooked passage from the Apostle Peter; a passage that can challenge our often-presumptuous attitude toward God and what we consider as our “privilege” in being God’s children.  Suffering is often the call of true believers; yet what is our attitude toward this scriptural principle?  Today we’ll consider truth, first of all from Jesus, then from Peter.  And let me clarify something before I even print it, and that is when Jesus refers to asking anything “in my name” it isn’t a heavenly slot machine using Jesus’ name; rather it is seeking “first the Kingdom of God…and His righteousness…”!  When we put God first, we’ll know His will and not only pursue it but follow it faithfully.  And just FYI, if you’re popular with the world, you may want to examine your relationship with Jesus (not judging simply making an observation, Jesus did!)

“Ye have not chosen me,

but I have chosen you,

and ordained you,

that ye should go and bring forth fruit,

and that your fruit should remain:

that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father

in my name,

he may give it you.

17 These things I command you,

that ye love one another.

18 If the world hate you,

ye know that it hated me

before it hated you.

19 If ye were of the world,

the world would love his own:

but because ye are not of the world,

but I have chosen you out of the world,

therefore the world hateth you.

20 Remember the word that I said unto you,

The servant is not greater than his lord.

If they have persecuted me,

they will also persecute you;

if they have kept my saying,

they will keep yours also.

21 But all these things will they do unto you

for my name’s sake,

because they know not him that sent me.”   John 15:16-21

Peter seems to restate the case for persecution of the believers by reminding us of the example of Jesus.  I pray that you will ponder this call to faithful service to our King regardless of the cost.

“Honour all men.

Love the brotherhood.

Fear God.

Honour the king.

18 Servants, be subject to your masters

with all fear;                                   (respect not terror)

not only to the good and gentle,

but also to the froward.  (unreasonable)

19 For this is thankworthy,

if a man for conscience toward God

endure grief,

suffering wrongfully.

20 For what glory is it,

if, when ye be buffeted for your faults,

ye shall take it patiently?

but if, when ye do well,

and suffer for it,

ye take it patiently,

this is acceptable with God.

21 For even hereunto were ye called:

because Christ also suffered for us,

leaving us an example,

that ye should follow his steps:

22 Who did no sin,

neither was guile found in his mouth:

23 Who, when he was reviled,

reviled not again;

when he suffered,

he threatened not;

but committed himself

to him that judgeth righteously:

24 Who his own self

bare our sins

in his own body

on the tree,

that we,

being dead to sins,

should live unto righteousness:

by whose stripes ye were healed.

25 For ye were as sheep going astray;

but are now returned

unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.” 1 Peter 2:17-25

As another side note, we are healed from sin by His stripes, so that we can live unto righteousness (See 2 Corinthians 5:17-21).  I would also encourage you to read on into chapter 3 for more advice for our homes; remembering that what we live before our children is much more important than just our words.  I pray that God will help me to be more of what He has called me to be—by His grace, through His power, and for His glory.   Won’t you join me in concentrating on our pursuit of God this year—today, and today and the next today!!!

“This is the day which the LORD hath made;

we will rejoice

and be glad in it.”  Psalm 118:24

Amen and Amen!!!
