SALUTE!!! Bible Ballistics: BBS #210

Bible Ballistics: BBs #210       SALUTE!!!

Happy Veteran’s Day to those here in the United States. As we think about those in any country who lay down their lives to protect and defend their homeland, I personally “Salute” those who serve in the military; who set aside their own personal comfort and convenience to serve and protect. I also “Salute” those who serve every day in communities as Law Enforcement Officers and Fire Fighters!

“This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:12-13

While Jesus calls us to love one another, that can often be a challenge! But not just “love”; Jesus calls us to love others “as I have loved you”! And Jesus loved us all the way to the cross, where He “lay down his life” for all who will believe in His substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for sin. As an old song says, “He paid a debt He didn’t owe, because I owed a debt I could NOT pay”! Jesus laid down His life for ME! For YOU!! He paid MY sin debt!

So we ought to say thank you today and every day to those who give themselves for our safety, first and foremost Jesus Christ who gave Himself that we might LIVE!

“Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:”  Colossians 1:12-14

And while military men and women have died for various nations and causes throughout history, at the very best they accomplished only temporary solutions to various issues of freedom, borders, property or sovereignty. But Jesus was different –He came “once” for “all”.

“By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” Hebrews 10:10

He is the victor, even though we have not yet seen the final exhibit of HIS SOVEREIGNTY. And just as military men and women must stand with due diligence to fulfill their duty, we are called to serve Jesus in all our ways. To live for Jesus continually with a life lived, by the power of His Holy Spirit and the truth of His Word!

“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”   Jude 1:3

And we can contend for the “faith”, because Our Lord Jesus made provision, just as He declared from the cross:

“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” John 19:30

He did it all for you and me. He paid the “ultimate price” as He “lay down his life for his friends”!!! And dear ones you can be His friend if you will but repent of your sin and trust in his sacrifice for YOU!! Accept HIS finished work and live as HIS friend, for He will “never leave you…”

So, “Salute” and ‘thank’ our military veterans who are giving today. And thank God for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. And most importantly, thank God for Jesus—who not only made the “ultimate sacrifice” but who IS the “Ultimate Sacrifice “ for YOU. For all time!!!

Bible Ballistics: Amazing Revelations-Part 1??? Vol. 6#25

We looked at the subject of “angels” last week in preparation for delving into Daniel chapters 10-12. These three chapters are all one dream/vision, which Daniel received from God, and to understand it’s import will take us some time, so we will spend the next two or three weeks laying this great section of scripture out in bite-sized pieces. While we won’t be going into great detail we will try to lay out the “main” things and let them be the “plain” things. Remember that we never interpret the “obvious” in light of the “obscure”, but we do lay out the “obvious” and let it shed light on the “obscure”. We also need to remember that there are just some things that we do not yet understand; and that scripture is spiritually discerned and sometimes we just don’t have enough information or personal maturity in the Lord to understand it all, yet. So our goal is to simply lay it out as accurately as we can, and to discern as much as possible of what God has revealed. And more importantly, how it should affect our lives, our behavior, and our testimony before the world.

“In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long: and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision.

2 In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks. 3 I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.

4 And in the four and twentieth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel; 5 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz: 6 His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude.

7 And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vision; but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves.

8 Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength. 9 Yet heard I the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground. 10 And, behold, an hand touched me, which set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands.” Daniel 10:1-10

This encounter takes place about two years after the vision of chapter 9. It was in the first year of Darius the Mede, and this tenth chapter takes place in the third year of Cyrus the Persian. What we must remember is that this is the Medo-Persian Kingdom, and that they have co-rulers, one from each side of the house, so to speak. We see in verse 1 a confirmation of the veracity of this vision, and that it’s fulfillment is in the distant future. While some parts of it are closer in time than others, it all points to the things of the “end times”. The skeptics rail on this particular section of Daniel and insist that someone else must have written it, and much later than Daniel lived. And the reason they do so, is because the events that Daniel describes played out so historically accurate that the critics say it couldn’t have been prophesied as far in advance as Daniel’s life would demand. But “they” don’t understand and believe that our God is the God of all history; that He knows the end from the beginning!!! Amen!

In verses 2-3 we see that Daniel was practicing a period of mourning and fasting for three weeks. While we’re not told why he was in this period of intense focus on his God, we know that his sense of devotion and discernment may have lead him to this time. We’re just not told any of the issues that were on his heart, but we did see his burden for his people in his prayer from chapter 9.

In verses 4-6 Daniel sees the “man in linen” for the first time. While the description parallels the description that John gives of The Lord Jesus in Revelation 1, I will just say that it could be a “pre-incarnate” appearance of Jesus or simply a messenger/angel sent by God given this particular appearance before Daniel. We are just not going to be distracted by the messenger and miss the message. Daniel goes on to tell us that he alone saw the vision; but some sort of ‘quaking’ or ‘dread’ affected the men who were with him and they fled away from him. Oh, to be in the presence of such a man of God!

Daniel is so overwhelmed by this sight, that he passes out at the sound of this ‘mans’ words, then a hand (he doesn’t say whose hand) touches him and he rises from flat on his face, to be on his hands and knees. Then comes the message.

“And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling.

12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. 13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia. 14 Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days. 15 And when he had spoken such words unto me, I set my face toward the ground, and I became dumb.

16 And, behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me, O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength. 17 For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? for as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me. 18 Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me, 19 And said, O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me.

20 Then said he,

Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight

with the prince of Persia:

and when I am gone forth,

lo, the prince of Grecia shall come.

21 But I will shew thee

that which is noted in the scripture of truth:

and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.” Daniel 10:11-21

Verse 11 is one of the verses in all of scripture that I pray for and desire to be true of me: “O Daniel, a man greatly beloved”. To be a child of God that could hear these words from the heart of my God!!! I can think of nothing greater to strive for in this life than to hear “well done, thou good and faithful servant” and that before God I could be worthy of hearing “greatly beloved” from my King. Oh, dear ones, I so regret how easily I am distracted from the work of the Lord so often. The demands of life, the techno-whirl that calls us on every hand, just the weakness of the flesh—all have the potential to pull us away from our devotion to our Lord God and His Son Jesus Christ. May we take this opportunity to re-commit ourselves to strive for a deeper and more discerning focus on the things of God, to a more faithful commitment to His Word, and to a deeper consciousness of the affect I should have on the world.

As this “messenger” speaks we see he is sent from God to Daniel, and Daniel is finally able to stand to his feet. How I wish we could regain the “awe” and “reverential” aspect of our relationship to God Almighty. We live in a culture, even a Christian culture that often negates and ignores the awesome and unparalleled nature and character of our God—He IS Holy—was, is and ever shall be HOLY God. Not to be regarded flippantly or, as He often is, even disregarded and equated with a level of mere mortals. A sad state of affairs, especially when it the state in many so-called “churches”!

Verses 12-13 are the main reasons that I personally don’t believe this “messenger” to be a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus, Himself. And the reason? We find here an awesome picture of “spiritual warfare”. This messenger was sent from God when Daniel had begun his season of fasting and mourning before God. But this messenger of God encountered other “angelic” opposition from the demonic angelic realm. He was delayed for three weeks, before he was able to get to Daniel. Now if this had been “Jesus”, I don’t see any powers detaining Him, in any way. But one of the other angelic messengers would be a different case, and only when the archangel Michael came to help did the messenger prevail, and got to Daniel after this three-week delay. This is the same thing that Paul refers to in Ephesians 6:10-19. There are battles going on around us of which we are totally unaware in this world. But God is at work, and sovereign over all these things and will continue to accomplish HIS purposes, and speak to His people in His time and His ways. Don’t become weary precious friend because you haven’t heard from God in the time you expected. HE IS AT WORK ON YOUR BEHALF. You just press on in the power of the Holy Spirit, the comfort and encouragement of the Word of God, and the wise counsel of spiritually mature believers who live out what they believe daily and help and encourage you!

Once again our messenger tells Daniel that he is come to give him a message and understanding of the things of the end. Many things that will affect his people—the people of Israel greatly, and almost continually. And affect them in the near future as well as the long-distant future, in fact to the very end of time. These words again leave Daniel speechless!

As we look at the rest of the passage, I’d like us to jump to verse 21, “But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth”. This messenger is sent with a message of truth directly from God, and “the truth”, Jesus! We don’t have to worry about God’s Word being diluted—He has it recorded in heaven, by the very one who spoke it all into the hearts of His own. Our job is to read it, study it and come to know HIM through His very Word of Truth—both the man and the book!!! His Spirit will direct us if we but yield!

Someone once again touches Daniel, and we simply won’t take time to get into the debate of how many were there with Daniel. There was at least one, but there could have been more than one. It’s just not something that we will spend time on in this brief article. In the discourse between Daniel and this messenger/messengers Daniel once again becomes weak and is touched and strengthened by “one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me”. If we compare this to the messenger he saw at the beginning, it might be an additional messenger who did not have the same appearance as the “man in linen”. It’s just one of those obscure things which we won’t allow to distract us from the message. You can study it more this week, and see what conclusions you come up with.

Daniel is strengthened to receive the message, but we don’t need to stop here as this continues into chapter 11, and it’s imperative that we understand that chapter 11 is a continuation of this dialogue with the messenger. Chapter 11 is the angel still speaking and clarifying for Daniel the “spiritual warfare” that he has encountered and how great a part this plays in the “seen” things, which are affected by the “unseen”!

“Also I in the first year of Darius the Mede, even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen him. 2 And now will I shew thee the truth.” Daniel 11:1-2a

This messenger declares that he has been at work in the part of the kingdom under Darius the Mede from the beginning (See chapters 5 & 6 for this transition). And then he goes on to reveal to Daniel the actual message:

“Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia.” Daniel 11:2b

Daniel sees the future of the Medo-Persian Empire in more detail. Remember he was given a brief description of this in chapter 8. The Medes and Persians would rule together for a time, and then the Persians would rise to prominence throughout the end of their kingdom. They would then enrage a growing Grecian Empire. The vision continues:

“And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will. 4 And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.” Daniel 11:3-4

Here Daniel is once again given the picture of the Greeks who will arise as the next world kingdom. Parallel with the vision he was given in chapter 8, Alexander the Great is pictured here, as well as his untimely demise. Daniel is also told again that the kingdom will continue but under four different sections, with four different rulers; none of whom were related to Alexander, as he died without wife or offspring. It took more than 20 years for four of Alexander’s generals to divvy up the kingdom into four main sections, but the directions of the wind; a Northern kingdom, Southern kingdom, Eastern kingdom, and Western kingdom: Lysimachus, Cassander, Seleucus, and Ptolemy being the generals. They divided the kingdom this way: Lysimachus received Thrace and most of Asia Minor. Cassander obtained Macedonia and Greece. Ptolemy was given Egypt, Palestine, Cilicia, Petra, and Cyprus while Seleucus controlled the rest of Asia: Syria, Babylon, Persia, and India.

We will stop here for now, but as you read on into chapter 11 and 12, remember that the two main kingdoms that are dealt with are the “South” and the “North”. This would be the Selucid Dynasty of the “North” and the Ptolemy Dynasty of the “South”. I would suggest that you get out a map of the Mediterranean and see what lies between these two areas? Why would this be important to Daniel? We’ll look at those questions and answers next week. I hope this will challenge you to dig in and see what God has to say, and why it is important to both Daniel and his people, Israel?

Suit Up–Today!!! Bible Ballistics: BBs #209

Bible Ballistics: BBs #209       Suit Up–Today!!!

We talked last time about standing fast, and the assurance that we don’t stand alone. We know that our God stands with us through the person of the Holy Spirit. But we are also to do our part knowing:

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Philippians 4:13

By the power of the risen Lord, and the indwelling Holy Spirit we can overcome the adversity around us, the trials that confront us, and the opposition toward our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and God the Father! We must remember what Jesus told us about this world, and what we are to expect while living here.

“If ye were of the world,

the world would love his own:

but because ye are not of the world,

but I have chosen you out of the world,

therefore the world hateth you.

20 Remember the word that I said unto you,

The servant is not greater than his lord.

If they have persecuted me,

they will also persecute you;

if they have kept my saying,

they will keep yours also.

21 But all these things will they do unto you

for my name’s sake,

because they know not him

that sent me.” John 15:19-21

And scripture goes on to give us even more help that we might know how to stand fast in this evil day. We must take up the armor of God—the armor that He has provided that we can victoriously stand in a hostile world.

“Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God,

that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day,

and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore,

having your loins girt about with truth,

and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15 And your feet shod

with the preparation

of the gospel of peace;

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith,

wherewith ye shall be able

to quench

all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation,

and the sword of the Spirit,

which is the word of God:

18 Praying always

with all prayer

and supplication

in the Spirit,

and watching thereunto

with all perseverance

and supplication

for all saints;” Ephesians 6:13-18

So what are we called to do? We are called, instructed and encouraged to take unto ourselves the “whole armor of God”, so that we will be “able to withstand in the evil day”! And friends we are in the “evil day”!!! So how do we do it?

We MUST take it up for ourselves, knowing that it is our Redeemer who provides the armor for us, by His indwelling Spirit within us, and by confidence in and knowledge of His Word.

-We must have the belt of Truth—gird about us, holding everything together—only Jesus our Redeemer can do that!

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6 (Also see Hebrews 1:1-3)

-Having on the breastplate of Righteousness—already having on by the appropriation of true salvation in Him.

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

-And our feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of Peace—the peace of God, which only comes through Jesus. And the good news should be seen in our footsteps all along our way—the good news that Jesus changes us form “enemies of God” to those who have “peace with God” as His own children.

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:….. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.” Romans 5:1,10

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” John 1:12

-Taking the shield of Faith, which enables us to deflect the flaming arrows/missiles of the enemy—

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6

“(For we walk by faith, not by sight🙂” 2 Cor. 5:7

-And take the helmet of Salvation—because He has saved us we can walk by “the Spirit and not fulfill the lusts of the flesh”. And we can do that when we:

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:” Philippians 2:5

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2

-And the Sword of the Spirit—which is the Word of God—

Jesus is the “Word”, the living Word and the author of the written Word. We must be in the Word to know truth, both the person and the written love letter to our hearts and minds—the Bible.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men….14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth..” John 1:1-4, 14

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Psalm 119:11

The living Word and the written—IN MY HEART!!!

-Praying always—“Pray without ceasing.” 1 Thes. 5:17

Are YOU suited up? Today? It’s imperative for victory!!!

Stand Strong!!! Bible Ballistics: BBs #208

Bible Ballistics: BBs #208       Stand Strong!!!

While alarming world events abound around us-whether it’s political attacks, cataclysmic events, crashes, or natural disasters- it’s easy to be fearful or distressed. But our Lord Jesus has called us to march to a different drummer.

“Let brotherly love continue.

2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers:

for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

3 Remember them that are in bonds,

as bound with them;

and them which suffer adversity,

as being yourselves also in the body.

4 Marriage is honourable in all,

and the bed undefiled:

but whoremongers and adulterers

God will judge.

5 Let your conversation be without covetousness;

and be content with such things as ye have:

for he hath said,

I will never leave thee,

nor forsake thee.

6 So that we may boldly say,

The Lord is my helper,

and I will not fear

what man shall do unto me.”      Hebrews 13:1-6

God calls us to walk in love—regardless of what is going on around us. Now that doesn’t mean being oblivious of our surroundings, but it does mean that we look beyond the current events to the sovereign power of God Almighty, knowing that our God reigns. This love means that we understand that “men” aren’t our enemies but the unseen forces of evil that are continually at work behind the ‘scenes’. It means that I walk with the “fruit of the Spirit” of God evident in all my ways, even when it’s not popular, easy or convenient. Peter gives us a call to love:

“But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. 8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. 9 Use hospitality one to another without grudging.” 1 Peter 4:7-9 (Charity is LOVE)

Regardless of the circumstances that surround us we are to walk to God’s drummer not the world’s. We are to exercise godliness in all we do:

With hospitality—

With compassion and generosity to those in need—

With empathy, knowing that we could easily be there—

With moral integrity, no matter what others condone—

With courage to share the truth of God’s judgment—

With contentment and NOT covetousness—

 With CONFIDENCE IN OUR LORD—

Because “he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Our Lord Jesus has promised NEVER to leave us on our own. We can walk in the confidence that He is with us as we walk in obedience to His Spirit and His leadership in our hearts and lives. So that we can: “boldly say,

The Lord is my helper,

and I will not fear

what man shall do unto me.” Heb. 13:6

So stand strong dear friend—stand strong for God’s truth!

Angels On The Rise??? Bible Ballistics: Vol. 6 #24

Bible Ballistics: Angels On The Rise??? Vol. 6#24

Since we will be delving into Daniel 10-12 in the next few weeks, as these three chapters are inseparable, I’d like us to take today to do a cursory look at what the Bible says about angels. Much is misunderstood in regard to angels, and much false information abounds, so I think we should peruse the scripture to understand the truth about them before we dig into the text itself, as it says a lot about angels.

We know that Daniel has already seen the angel named Gabriel twice in his visions:

“And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.” Daniel 8:16

“Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.” Daniel 9:21

We see from these two glimpses that angels are messengers; in the reference in chapter 8 we see that Gabriel is instructed to give Daniel understanding. In chapter 9 Gabriel flew to touch Daniel and then revealed to him the great prophecy of the 70 weeks.

We also see this same angel in the New Testament. He appeared to Zacharias and Mary, so let’s examine those appearances:

“And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.” Luke 1:19

We also see some new information revealed to Zacharias, Gabriel is an angel that stands “in the presence of God”, and that he was sent from there directly to Zacharias with information that would set in motions events that would change the world.

“And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,” Luke 1:26

We now see this same messenger sent 6 months later to the virgin Mary to announce the coming birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Wow!!! Messengers sent from God, that is one of the functions of angels. We also see another named angel introduced to us in the book of Daniel, Michael. Let’s see what we can learn from the accounts of him.

“But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.” Daniel 10:13

Here we find that Michael is called one of “the chief princes”. There is a hierarchy among angels, and Gabriel and Michael are among the chief princes of the angels, but that’s not all:

“But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.” Daniel 10:21

Michael is called here “your prince”. Does that mean he is “Daniel’s” personal angel? I don’t think so, and if we’ll simply look a little further in this account we can find the answer to that question.

“And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.” Daniel 12:1

Here we see that Michael isn’t Daniel’s ‘personal’ angel but rather the angel who stands for the children of Israel. God watches over His own, and His holy angels are His servants/messengers in the spiritual realm, to which we aren’t often privy.

“Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.” Jude 1:9

Without getting into the depths of what this verse is referring to, we find that Jude described Michael as an “archangel”, simply means one of “rank”, comparable to the term “prince” in Daniel 12:1. We also see that Michael does not speak for himself, but refers all things to the power and control of God, he exercises no “presumption” when dealing directly with Satan. We need to be sure we act biblically in regard to spiritual powers and authorities. There is also another function of ‘angels’ mentioned in Revelation 12.

“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,” Revelation 12:7

For our purposes, the timing of this event is not our focus, but we simply want to observe that angels can also function as God’s warriors, or warriors against Him. I will simply note that the dragon here is the Devil, or Satan and he also has angels that have fallen/rebelled with him and they can also function as warriors, but against God. Fortunately we KNOW that God wins, and we who are His will share in that victory.

So, does other scripture confirm these things? Let’s look and see.

“And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.” Hebrews 1:7

Angels are “spirit” beings who do not have bodies like humans, but do often take on human form when they appear to humans.

“Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” Hebrews 1:14

One of their functions of ministry is to those who are “heirs of salvation”! We do have angels who are working on our behalf, but remember there are also those who are working against us (See Ephesians 6:10-20), but that is a topic we’ll cover in the next few weeks as we delve into Daniel 10-12.

“So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.” Genesis 3:24

Here we see Cherubims, a different class of angels, and they are set to guard the Garden of Eden from man’s reentering. The cherubims were also the angels whose images were over the “ark of the covenant”.

“For the cherubims spread forth their wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubims covered the ark and the staves thereof above.” 2 Chronicles 5:8

There is also another group of angels called ‘seraphim’, who are seen at the throne of God.

“In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. 2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, .” Isaiah 6:1-2

These angels are worshipping before God’s throne, but there are also angels who have rebelled and gone against God, and they have various descriptions in scripture. While we won’t be covering the various incidents that are described, we need to understand that angels who have defied God will also face His judgment at a point in the future. Here are some passages that make that clear:

“Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:” Job 4:18

“And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.” Jude 1:6

“For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;” 2 Peter 2:4

We also find some angels who are chained for specific times and purposes. Remember our purpose is just to observe the scriptural truths about angels, not to dig into the various contexts at this time.

“Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. 15 And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.” Revelation 9:14-15

There is a time coming of great judgment on men and also the very angels who have rebelled against God. We will cover some of this information in Daniel 10-12, but it is imperative that we have a firm grasp on the “spiritual” nature of angels and don’t get distracted by false assumptions. The first being the fact that we are equal to or greater than angels—WE ARE NOT!!!

“Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord.” 2 Peter 2:11

I’d like to close todays post with a few conclusions that may cause you to go “UMMMMM”, but my challenge to you would be to just dig into scripture and see what you can find if these things are new or alarming to you personally.

Angels are spiritual beings who are greater in power and the order of things than we are. We are not to be presumptuous in regard to angelic/demonic beings but trust to our God to guide us and ask God to rebuke those forces on our behalf. I have found nowhere in scripture where we are told to “command” those beings in varying degrees of authority in regards to our holy living. While there are biblical accounts of humans commanding demons to come out of individuals, you better be sure that you are acting at God’s bidding and in HIS direction to you, and not in presumption. There is a most graphic account of presumption towards the spiritual forces in Acts, which is worthy of out time:

“Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. 14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? 16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. 18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.” Acts 19:13-18

We need to be walking in total obedience to Jesus, and we can only do that when we commit to walk in the power of HIS Spirit, not in the presumption of the flesh! Even those who aren’t God’s own better be aware of the danger of ignorant presumption toward God or other spiritual entities.

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” Galatians 5:16

Angels are not men, nor do men become angels. Regardless of all the “cutesy” pictures, people do not become angels when they die. People are a unique creation and never become angels. And while angels may “appear” in human form to people—they are NOT human, nor will they ever be.

Angels are NOT to be worshipped! While they are greater in power and authority, they are not “gods”—they are servants/messengers of the Most High God!

“Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.” Colossians 2:18-19

We are to worship God and Him only. We alone, as his special creation can be the recipients of salvation by grace.

Angels, on the other hand were free to rebel, but have no offer or understanding of the redemption and salvation that Jesus bought at Calvary.

“Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.” 1 Peter 1:12

So, as you ponder these things this week, let us determine to be faithful in our service to God and to those He places in our path. May we truly be grateful for our salvation and learn and know the truth about angelic beings, but not to exalt them beyond truth. Understanding that we don’t become angels when we die and join Jesus in heaven, but we are humans privileged to experience the “new birth” and become the children of God through the atoning, substitutionary death of Jesus Christ—and that only by faith through the grace of God (See Ephesians 2:8-10). Let’s live like it.

I look forward to beginning our study of Daniel 10-12. Have a blessed week in the Lord Jesus Christ.
