Bible Ballistics: Vol. 11 No. 14 ‘This Is My Story’! What’s Yours?
We are celebrating “Mother’s Day” here in the US, but I’d like to look at a different subject today—our confidence in Jesus. And whether you’re a mother or father, a sister or a brother, or just a loner, there is a Savior who cares for you, and what you do about it is crucial and will determine your future and destiny!
Some of you will recognize part of the title as being from an old Fanny Crosby Hymn—and that is where I want us to focus today; ‘Blessed Assurance, Jesus IS Mine’! And that friends, is “my” story! What is your story? Have you come to Jesus, and found Him faithful? We all have a story, because we all get to make choices—but we often forget that each choice has a consequence; and when we choose Jesus, in response to His Holy Spirit’s call to our heart, we become a child of God, and HE becomes our story! Other choices will bring their own consequences, yet while we are free to make our own choices, we are NOT free to set the consequences!!!
“That was the true Light,
which lighteth every man
that cometh into the world.
10 He was in the world,
and the world was made by him,
and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own,
and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him,
to them gave he power
to become the sons of God,
even to them that believe
on his name:
13 Which were born,
not of blood,
nor of the will of the flesh,
nor of the will of man,
but of God.” John 1:9-13
God births us as HIS own children by the work of The Holy Spirit, restoring us to relationship with Him!!! All by the blood of Jesus, which ‘cleanseth us from all sin’, for without Jesus there is only hopeless desperation, and that is my story! The story of love, forgiveness and redemption from sin and desperation!!!
“Giving thanks unto the Father,
which hath made us meet
to be partakers
of the inheritance
of the saints
in light:
13 Who hath delivered us
from the power of darkness,
and hath translated us
into the kingdom
of his dear Son:
14 In whom we have redemption
through his blood,
even the forgiveness of sins:” Colossians 1:12-14
Jesus has “delivered us from the power of darkness”, because that is where we all are without Him!
“And you hath he quickened,
who were dead in trespasses
and sins;
2 Wherein in time past
ye walked
according to the course
of this world,
according to the prince
of the power of the air,
the spirit that now worketh
in the children
of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all
had our conversation
in times past
in the lusts of our flesh,
fulfilling the desires
of the flesh
and of the mind;
and were by nature
the children of wrath,
even as others.
4 But God,
who is rich in mercy,
for his great love
wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead
in sins,
hath quickened us together
with Christ,
(by grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together,
and made us sit together
in heavenly places
in Christ Jesus:” Ephesians 2:1-6
Oh, what a wondrous phrase, “But God”—and I’m so glad that God rewrote my story by His grace and the blood of Jesus. For without the blood of Jesus, we have no hope, but through His blood we have eternal life “in Christ Jesus”, and just as importantly, we also have Christ Jesus in us!
“Whereof I am made a minister,
according to the dispensation of God
which is given to me
for you,
to fulfil the word of God;
26 Even the mystery
which hath been hid
from ages
and from generations,
but now is made manifest
to his saints:
27 To whom God would make known
what is the riches
of the glory
of this mystery
among the Gentiles;
which is Christ in you,
the hope of glory:” Colossians 1:25-27
“Christ in you, the hope of glory” is the New Covenant, which Jesus affected at Calvary:
“Behold, the days come,
saith the LORD,
that I will make a new covenant
with the house of Israel,
and with the house of Judah:
32 Not according to the covenant
that I made with their fathers
in the day that I took them
by the hand
to bring them out of the land
of Egypt;
which my covenant they brake,
although I was an husband unto them,
saith the LORD:
33 But this shall be the covenant
that I will make with the house of Israel;
After those days,
saith the LORD,
I will put my law in their inward parts,
and write it in their hearts;
and will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
34 And they shall teach no more
every man his neighbour,
and every man his brother, saying,
Know the LORD:
for they shall all know me,
from the least of them
unto the greatest of them,
saith the LORD:
for I will forgive their iniquity,
and I will remember their sin no more.” Jeremiah 31:31-34
And that my friends, is what Jesus did for me, and He will do the same for you also. He forgives our sin and remembers them no more, all because of the substitutionary, atoning sacrifice that HE made for “my” sin and “yours” when Jesus went to Calvary for all who will receive HIM!
“And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said,
Take this,
and divide it among yourselves:
18 For I say unto you,
I will not drink of the fruit of the vine,
until the kingdom of God shall come.
19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying,
This is my body
which is given for you:
this do
in remembrance of me.
20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying,
This cup is the new testament
in my blood,
which is shed for you.” Luke 22:17-20
Jesus Himself revealed His work at the cross, as “This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you”
the price due from all for sin—
the debt every person owes—
the penalty due for missing the mark—
the only way to God!!!
Yet Jesus made the way for us willingly, at the cost of His sinless, perfect life—that friend, is ‘my’ story! How about you?
“Thomas saith unto him,
Lord, we know not whither thou goest;
and how can we know the way?
6 Jesus saith unto him,
I am
the way,
the truth,
and the life:
no man cometh unto the Father,
but by me.” John 14:6
The Apostle John wrote even more about this “way”!
“This then is the message
which we have heard of him,
and declare unto you,
that God is light,
and in him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him,
and walk in darkness,
we lie,
and do not the truth:
7 But if we walk in the light,
as he is in the light,
we have fellowship
one with another,
and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son
cleanseth us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have
no sin,
we deceive ourselves,
and the truth
is not in us.” 1 John 1:5-8
So my question for us today is simple, what is your “assurance” based on? Do you know the love and forgiveness of Jesus, or are you depending on yourself, or something else to bring fulfillment to your life. It’s only Jesus that gives life—abundant life—and He gives it by the sacrifice of His life for you and me at Calvary!
“I am the door:
by me if any man enter in,
he shall be saved,
and shall go in
and out,
and find pasture.
10 The thief cometh not,
but for to steal,
and to kill,
and to destroy:
I am come that they might have life,
and that they might have it more abundantly.
11 I am the good shepherd:
the good shepherd giveth his life
for the sheep.” John 10:9-11
Do you know the “good shepherd”? He is waiting for you today, if you will but hear His voice and respond to Him in repentance and faith! He is calling—will you respond?
“Behold,
I stand at the door,
and knock:
if any man hear my voice,
and open the door,
I will come in to him,
and will sup with him,
and he with me.” Revelation 3:20
And I can’t close without sharing the great message that Fanny Crosby penned so long ago. And it’s as true today as it was then!
Blessed Assurance By Fanny J. Crosby
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood
Refrain:
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels, descending, bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
Amen and Amen! May your assurance rest in JESUS!
