Rest Or Wrest??? A Word from THE WORD!!! #391

Just a few thoughts today that I pray will challenge us to consider our ways!  Will we rest in The Lord Jesus or keep trying to wrest things out of His hands and do it “my way”?  Jesus again and again called the people around Him to come; but He also made it clear that only those who heard the voice of His Father would truly come!  Let’s consider a few things that He shared and see where we land.

“At that time Jesus answered and said,

I thank thee, O Father,

Lord of heaven and earth,

because thou hast hid these things

from the wise and prudent,

and hast revealed them

unto babes.

26 Even so, Father:

for so it seemed good in thy sight.

27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father:

and no man knoweth the Son,

but the Father;

neither knoweth any man the Father,

save the Son,

and he to whomsoever the Son

will reveal him.

28 Come unto me,

all ye that labour and are heavy laden,

and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you,

and learn of me;

for I am meek and lowly in heart:

and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy,

and my burden is light.”  Matthew 11:2530                   (See 1 Corinthians 1)

Jesus called us unto Himself, those who didn’t “know it all”!  Those who “knew it all” were ever standing against Him.  The same is happening today—as it has since the beginning; we can go all the way back to Genesis chapter 3!  Adam and Eve thought what Satan said made more sense than obeying God!  Cain thought if he got rid of Abel, he would be better off, for Abel obeyed and Cain did it his own way (which is never acceptable to God!) Jacob took some 20+ years to find out that God’s way is always right and best!  How about you and me?  Are we taking on the yoke that Jesus calls us to or doing it on our own—for surely ‘my ways’ are more efficient, more productive, more beneficial, more lucrative, more fun…you fill in the blank…than God’s ways!

We find that even in His own ministry, Jesus watched people come and go, even those of His closest circle.  Don’t expect any less, Jesus told us it would be so.  I implore you to consider all that you hear and see and compare it to God’s Word not simply what you see and/or hear.  And let me preface what we’re going to look at by simply reminding you that “speaking the truth in love” is not hateful; if I show you biblically that something is wrong, I am trying to save you from heartache, pain or even hell!

“These things I command you,

that ye love one another.

18 If the world hate you,

ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

19 If ye were of the world,

the world would love his own:

but because ye are not of the world,

but I have chosen you out of the world,

therefore the world hateth you.

20 Remember the word that I said unto you,

The servant is not greater than his lord.

If they have persecuted me,

they will also persecute you;

if they have kept my saying,

they will keep yours also.

21 But all these things will they do unto you

for my name’s sake,

because they know not him that sent me.

22 If I had not come and spoken unto them,

they had not had sin:

but now they have no cloke for their sin.

23 He that hateth me

hateth my Father also.”  John 15:18-23

And backing up a bit in the timeline of Jesus ministry, there came a time when He began to teach harder and harder things for the people to comprehend, let’s see what some of the response was to our Lord Himself.

“Many therefore of his disciples,

when they had heard this, said,

This is an hard saying;

who can hear it?

61 When Jesus knew in himself

that his disciples murmured at it,

he said unto them,

Doth this offend you?

62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man

ascend up where he was before?

63 It is the spirit that quickeneth;

the flesh profiteth nothing:

the words that I speak unto you,

they are spirit,

and they are life.

64 But there are some of you that believe not.

For Jesus knew from the beginning

who they were that believed not,

and who should betray him.

65 And he said,

Therefore said I unto you,

that no man can come unto me,

except it were given unto him of my Father.

66 From that time

many of his disciples went back,

and walked no more with him.”  John 6:60-66

So, as simply as I know how, I want to ask each of us to consider our ways.  Are we going to wrest things out of God’s hands again and again; or are we willing to “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me”?  Do we want to “find rest unto your souls”? Or will we continue to wrest things out of God’s hands and take the wheel for ourselves?  I’ll simply close with Jesus’ own declaration!

“Jesus answered them,

I told you,

 and ye believed not:

the works that I do in my Father’s name,

they bear witness of me.

26 But ye believe not,

because ye are not of my sheep,

as I said unto you.

27 My sheep hear my voice,

and I know them,

and they follow me:

28 And I give unto them eternal life;

and they shall never perish,

neither shall any man pluck them

out of my hand.

 29 My Father, which gave them me,

 is greater than all;

and no man is able to pluck them

out of my Father’s hand.

30 I and my Father are one.

31 Then the Jews took up stones again

to stone him.”   John 10:25-31

Are your hands folded in prayer or about to throw rocks?  It’s your choice but choose wisely there is a test.

Amen and Amen!!!

Weariness Is Real???   A Word from THE WORD!!! #362

“And the apostles gathered themselves together

unto Jesus,

and told him all things,

both what they had done,

and what they had taught.

31 And he said unto them,

Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place,

and rest a while:

for there were many coming and going,

and they had no leisure

so much as to eat.

32 And they departed into a desert place

by ship privately.”  Mark 6:31

Here we have Mark recounting the death of John the Baptizer, and his (John’s) disciples took care of his body, and the Apostles also came to Jesus to share what had been done (for if you remember, many of Jesus’ Apostles had been followers of John before they followed Him).  Jesus understood the weariness of not only ministry but of grief, disappointment and stress, so He called them to come and “rest a while”!  Their spiritual tanks were empty, and the demands of ministry had been so constant that Mark tells us that “they had no leisure so much as to eat”!  Ever been there?  I think we all have in one way or another, and as Jesus was God “in the flesh”, He knew the limits of human strength, endurance and the need for rest.

If you remember Matthew also gives us an account of Jesus resting when His disciples became frantic and were apparently distressed that their Master was asleep when they were about to die!  Ever been there?

“Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him,

he gave commandment to depart

unto the other side.

19 And a certain scribe came, and said unto him,

Master, I will follow thee

whithersoever thou goest.

20 And Jesus saith unto him,

The foxes have holes,

and the birds of the air have nests;

but the Son of man hath not where

to lay his head.

21 And another of his disciples said unto him,

Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

22 But Jesus said unto him,

Follow me;

and let the dead bury their dead.

23 And when he was entered into a ship,

his disciples followed him.

24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest

in the sea,

insomuch that the ship was covered

with the waves:

but he was asleep.

25 And his disciples came to him,

and awoke him, saying,

Lord, save us:

we perish.

26 And he saith unto them,

Why are ye fearful,

O ye of little faith?

Then he arose,

and rebuked the winds and the sea;

and there was a great calm.

27 But the men marvelled, saying,

What manner of man is this,

that even the winds and the sea

obey him!”  Matthew 8:18-27

I don’t know if you can relate to this, but I feel that I can; I come from hurricane country, and while you have notice, you never know how severe it will be.  I now live in tornado country and they seemingly, can just drop down out of the sky! This can cause great fear and consternation to we who live in uncertain weather locations.  And just this week we have seen the disaster that can come from the flood waters; we can’t understand the massive tragedy that Texas has suffered this week; and like us Jesus’ disciples were afraid that they were about to meet their end.  Yet, Jesus was asleep in the boat!  Oh, to learn to trust to the care of my Heavenly Father this much!  Jesus simply arose when they awakened Him, questioning their lack of faith in the safety that they had with HIM!  How about us?  Satan uses fear like a stick and beats us up with it, and we, like the disciples forget that we are with the Master of all creation.  And in case you didn’t know that Jesus was/is/and ever shall be the creator, let me share a few scriptures to enlighten you on this subject.  (Jesus IS the WORD! —the living WORD and the breath of the written Word!)

“In the beginning was the Word,

and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning

with God.

3 All things were made by him;

and without him was not any thing made

that was made.

4 In him was life;

and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness;

and the darkness comprehended it not.”   John 1:1-5

Paul also wrote of this creative nature of our Lord!

“Giving thanks unto the Father,

which hath made us meet to be partakers

of the inheritance of the saints in light:

13 Who hath delivered us

from the power of darkness,

and hath translated us

into the kingdom of his dear Son:

14 In whom we have redemption

through his blood,

even the forgiveness of sins:

15 Who is the image of the invisible God,

the firstborn of every creature:

16 For by him were all things created,

that are in heaven,

and that are in earth,

visible and invisible,

whether they be

thrones,

or dominions,

or principalities,

or powers:

all things were created by him,

and for him:

17 And he is before all things,

and by him all things consist.

18 And he is the head of the body,

the church:

who is the beginning,

the firstborn from the dead;

that in all things

he might have the preeminence.”                 Colossians 1:12-18

And if you are one of those who say that Jesus never claimed to be God, let me share Jesus’ own words with you today.

“My sheep hear my voice,

and I know them,

and they follow me:

28 And I give unto them eternal life;

and they shall never perish,

neither shall any man pluck them

out of my hand.

29 My Father, which gave them me,

is greater than all;

and no man is able to pluck them

out of my Father’s hand.

30 I and my Father are one.”  John 10:27-30

So where do we go when we are weary to the bone (and I get that way frequently, as you probably do as well!)?  And just by way of a comment, if the people of Jesus’ day rejected Him, don’t be alarmed, discouraged or distracted when people around you and I reject Him.  Our faith is in the Lord Jesus Christ, master of all and redeemer of those who will come to Him in repentance of our sin, and belief/faith in His substitutionary, atoning sacrifice on Calvary, not on those around us—whether they be genuine believers, nay-sayers, or antagonists!  Keep your eyes on the prize—JESUS!

“At that time Jesus answered and said,

I thank thee, O Father,

Lord of heaven and earth,

because thou hast hid these things

from the wise and prudent,

and hast revealed them

unto babes. 26 Even so, Father:

for so it seemed good in thy sight.

27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father:

and no man knoweth the Son,

but the Father;

neither knoweth any man the Father,

save the Son,

and he to whomsoever

the Son will reveal him.

28 Come unto me,

all ye that labour and are heavy laden,

and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you,

and learn of me;

for I am meek and lowly in heart:

and ye shall find rest

unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy,

and my burden is light.”  Matthew 11:25-30

Oh, my friends, if I only had time to share with you all the many times that Jesus in His mercy, grace and love had been my total strength, rest and restoration to service, health and peace; that very peace that Paul told us about.  Are you resting in Jesus or trying to carry the whole load alone?  It’s your choice, but choose wisely, the Master is holding out His arms to lift you up.  Don’t run away or deny The One who loves you and died that you might have life, “more abundantly”!

“Rejoice in the Lord alway:

and again I say, Rejoice.

5 Let your moderation be known unto all men.

The Lord is at hand.

6 Be careful for nothing;

but in every thing by prayer and supplication

with thanksgiving

let your requests be made known unto God.

7 And the peace of God,

which passeth all understanding,

shall keep your hearts and minds

through Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4:4-7

Let Jesus have those burdens and weariness—He is more than able!

Amen and Amen!!! (and don’t forget to read verses 8-9!)

The Time Between??? A Word from THE WORD!!! #203

Isaiah said it best:

“He is despised

and rejected of men;

a man of sorrows,

and acquainted with grief:

and we hid as it were our faces

from him;

he was despised,

and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he hath borne

our griefs,

and carried

our sorrows:

yet we did esteem him stricken,

smitten of God,

and afflicted.

5 But he was wounded

for our transgressions,

he was bruised

for our iniquities:

 the chastisement

of our peace was upon him;

and with his stripes

we are healed.

6 All we like sheep

have gone astray;

we have turned every one

to his own way;

and the LORD hath laid on him

the iniquity of us all.”  Isaiah 53:3-6

Isaiah prophesying of the coming Messiah, painted a picture of sin and its penalty on “All we”, and God had already appointed a Redeemer, a Lamb of God, a perfect sacrifice to atone (Pay for) for all our sin.  We are all “sin sick” and that is the disease that we all need to be healed from.  It’s why God says that “with his stripes we are healed”; for without Jesus’ substitutionary, atoning sacrifice of Himself– the beating, the nails, the rejection of men, the spitting, the cursing, the shame, the shedding of HIS own blood—we would have no hope, no cure for this disease of SIN!  But “the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all”. Thank you, Jesus, for dying for me.

But I want us to think about something else; as it’s Saturday and the disciples and followers of Jesus are full of grief; this One whom they believed was the Messiah, The Deliverer, The Chosen One, is now dead!  Hope was seemingly gone.  Have you ever gone through that “Time Between”?  The time between hopeless fear, and the joy of The Lord?  The time between loss and renewal?  The time between life-absorbing grief and renewed hope and peace and restoration from the hand of The Lord?  Most of us have suffered that grief of sudden, unexpected loss, and without Jesus, I can assure you, I couldn’t have gotten through mine!  But by the grace of God, and the saving power of The Blood of “The Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world” my heart was sustained in many times of sorrow and loss, but especially the murder and loss of my precious daughter.  BUT GOD!  Oh, my friends, the “BUT GOD”s of my life are innumerable, yet I have found Him faithful.

Think of the followers of Jesus, full of grief, sorrow, and unexpected horror; what could save them now.  They are hiding from the leaders who killed Jesus—fearing they might be next.  Even though Jesus had tried to prepare them, how could our feeble human minds comprehend His resurrection.  How about you?  When was the last time you went to a funeral, or sat by a loved one who died in your presence, that you expected them to arise from the grave?  Not me!  The disciples couldn’t comprehend what The Master wanted them to see—HE would arise.  Let’s see how scripture describes it from two who were walking to Emmaus just after the news came of the resurrection.  And while I know this is a lengthy passage, I think if more worthy of your time than my feeble words.  These were living the “time in between”!  How about you?  Have you met The Master?  He’s alive and well and loves you too!  I pray that you will ponder this passage and if you know Jesus, rejoice in it.  If you don’t know Jesus, I pray that you will call upon Him today—He is still in the life-changing business.  He saved me and has done wondrous things to make me who I am today, and He will do the same for you.

“And, behold, two of them went that same day

to a village called Emmaus,

which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.

14 And they talked together

of all these things which had happened.

15 And it came to pass, that,

while they communed together and reasoned,

Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

16 But their eyes were holden

 that they should not know him.

17 And he said unto them,

What manner of communications

are these that ye have one to another,

as ye walk,

and are sad?

18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas,

answering said unto him,

Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem,

and hast not known the things

which are come to pass there in these days?

19 And he said unto them,

What things?

And they said unto him,

Concerning Jesus of Nazareth,

which was a prophet

mighty in deed and word before God

and all the people:

20 And how the chief priests

and our rulers

delivered him to be condemned to death,

and have crucified him.

21 But we trusted that it had been he

which should have redeemed Israel:

and beside all this,

to day is the third day

since these things were done.

22 Yea, and certain women also of our company

made us astonished,

which were early at the sepulchre;

23 And when they found not his body,

they came, saying,

that they had also seen a vision

of angels,

which said that he was alive.

24 And certain of them which were with us

went to the sepulchre,

and found it even so as the women had said:

but him they saw not.

25 Then he said unto them,

O fools, and slow of heart to believe

all that the prophets have spoken:

26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things,

and to enter into his glory?

27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets,

he expounded unto them in all the scriptures

the things concerning himself.

28 And they drew nigh unto the village,

whither they went:

and he made as though he would have gone further.

29 But they constrained him,

saying, Abide with us:

for it is toward evening,

and the day is far spent.

And he went in to tarry with them.

30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them,

he took bread,

and blessed it,

and brake,

and gave to them.

31 And their eyes were opened,

and they knew him;

and he vanished out of their sight.

32 And they said one to another,

Did not our heart burn within us,

while he talked with us by the way,

and while he opened to us the scriptures?

33 And they rose up the same hour,

and returned to Jerusalem,

and found the eleven gathered together,

and them that were with them,

34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed,

and hath appeared to Simon.”  Luke 24:13-34

I can’t imagine the change of the environment when they saw and knew that Jesus was/is alive!  My friend, no matter your sorrow, grief, or feelings of hopelessness, I assure you that Jesus is LORD of all, and He can bring new life, hope, joy and restoration to your heart, mind, and soul.  He’s done it for me, and He will meet you where you are.  But by His saving blood HE won’t leave you there, He’ll lead you into His truth, love, and grace; just look up and believe in The One who died for YOU!

May you have a blessed and joy-filled time rejoicing in the victory that Jesus won at Calvary.  Rejoice in the Lord by joining His people in church tomorrow (and yes, the church is imperfect and full of hypocrites, but I’d rather go to church, in obedience to my Savior, with a few hypocrites than spend eternity in hell with them!)!

A Blessed Resurrection Day to you all.  HE IS ALIVE!!!  And HE IS COMING AGAIN!!!

Amen and Amen

God’s Abiding Comfort???  A Word from THE WORD!!! #180

I am writing this morning to remind us that all the comfort of our Lord Jesus and our Heavenly Father is always there, even when we are hurting so badly that we don’t recognize it.  I have heard His voice so often in my pain, sorrow, and confusion reminding me that HE is still God and HE has me in His hand.  He is there for you as well, and no matter the pain, Jesus knows.  We have so many of our loved ones who are going through trials, grief, and sorrow, and I felt that the comfort of God’s Word would be a much needed “balm of Gilead”!

“For the word of God

is quick,

and powerful,

and sharper than any twoedged sword,

piercing even to the dividing asunder

of soul and spirit,

and of the joints and marrow,

and is a discerner

of the thoughts

and intents

of the heart.

13 Neither is there any creature

that is not manifest in his sight:

but all things

are naked

and opened

unto the eyes of him

with whom we have to do.

14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest,

that is passed into the heavens,

Jesus the Son of God,

let us hold fast our profession.

15 For we have not an high priest

which cannot be touched with the feeling

of our infirmities;

but was in all points

tempted like as we are,

yet without sin.

16 Let us therefore come boldly

unto the throne of grace,

that we may obtain mercy,

and find grace to help

in time of need.”  Hebrews 4:12-16

No matter your need this “throne of grace” is always there for you and me; we have a God who loves us and never sleeps, but is ever there for us, night or day—through the good or bad, the simple or the difficult, the ups and the downs, HE knows our every need and is ever waiting for us to stop trying to “fix it” myself and run to, rest in, and rely upon Jesus and His cross.

The Psalmist said it better than I can:

“My help cometh from the LORD,

which made heaven and earth.

3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved:

he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel

shall neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The LORD is thy keeper:

the LORD is thy shade

upon thy right hand.”  Psalm 121:2-5

And one of my favorite passages from the Apostle Paul, which I run to myself, and share with you often, so let’s just rehearse what we know to be true—today, and every day!

“Grace be to you

and peace from God our Father,

and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 Blessed be God,

even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

the Father of mercies,

and the God of all comfort;

4 Who comforteth us

in all our tribulation,

that we may be able to comfort them

which are in any trouble,

by the comfort

wherewith we ourselves are comforted

of God.

5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us,

so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.

6 And whether we be afflicted,

it is for your consolation and salvation,

which is effectual

in the enduring of the same sufferings

which we also suffer:

or whether we be comforted,

 it is for your consolation and salvation.

7 And our hope of you is stedfast,

 knowing, that as ye are partakers

of the sufferings,

so shall ye be also

of the consolation.”  2 Corinthians 1:2-7

And in closing a word from our Lord Jesus, a word for which I am eternally grateful.

“These things have I spoken unto you,

being yet present with you.

26 But the Comforter,

which is the Holy Ghost,

whom the Father will send in my name,

he shall teach you all things,

and bring all things to your remembrance,

whatsoever I have said unto you.

27 Peace I leave with you,

my peace I give unto you:

not as the world giveth,

give I unto you.

Let not your heart be troubled,

neither let it be afraid.”  John 14:25-27

I pray the prayer of Paul for each of you, may you know God’s presence in new and amazing ways.

“And the very God of peace

sanctify you wholly;

and I pray God

your whole spirit

Are You Sleepy??? A Word from THE WORD!!! #140

Having trouble sleeping?  Lots of us have trouble on occasion getting to sleep or staying asleep; there are some who have continuous trouble with sleep, so I would like to give each of us a reminder of God’s faithfulness to provide for us—even in the realm of physical need—particularly sleep.  It would be of great benefit to memorize some of these passages (or all of them!) to rehearse each night as you head to bed.  Just sayin’!  We’ll start with one of my favorites, may it become one of yours.

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace,

whose mind is stayed on thee:

because he trusteth in thee.

4 Trust ye in the LORD

for ever:

for in the LORD JEHOVAH

is everlasting strength:” Isaiah 26:3-4

Then there is one from the Psalms that I used to teach (verse 8) to the little girl I used to keep, and I still quote it frequently.

“There be many that say,

Who will shew us any good?

LORD, lift thou up the light

of thy countenance upon us.

7 Thou hast put gladness in my heart,

more than in the time

that their corn and their wine increased.

8 I will both lay me down

in peace,

and sleep:

for thou, LORD, only

makest me dwell in safety.”  Psalm 4:6-8

Jesus’ words are a great reminder when the enemy tries to distract us from The One whom we love and follow!  As some of you know, I lost my only daughter to murder almost 4 years ago, and when people asked me then how I was handling this tragedy, my answer then was the same as it is now—for I serve a faithful God—I replied in confidence and truth, “God’s still God!  God’s still good!  And I still trust HIM!”

“Peace

I leave with you,

my peace

I give unto you:

not as the world giveth,

give I unto you.

Let not your heart be troubled,

neither let it be afraid.”  John 14:27

And a passage from the Psalms which I not only quote to myself but share probably more frequently than any other passage, for it meets so many needs, on so many levels– for it is sure, true and God will walk with you through it!!!

“Trust in the LORD,

and do good;

so shalt thou dwell in the land,

and verily thou shalt be fed.

4 Delight thyself also in the LORD;

and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

5 Commit thy way unto the LORD;

trust also in him;

and he shall bring it to pass.

6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness

as the light,

and thy judgment

as the noonday.

7 Rest in the LORD,

and wait patiently for him:

fret not thyself

because of him who prospereth in his way,

because of the man who bringeth wicked devices

to pass.

8 Cease from anger,

and forsake wrath:

fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.”  Psalm 37:3-8

I pray that the peace of The Lord will pervade your life as you seek HIM.  Get in HIS Word!  Walk with HIM in the way, and you will find HIM sufficient to every need that comes your way.

Amen and Amen!!!
