Faith Or Presumption???  A Word from THE WORD!!! #446

Faith can be a called a crutch, or it can be a sure and certain thing, when it’s placed in Jesus Christ and Him alone.  My faith is confidently placed in the surety of what Jesus did at Calvary! It’s the Gospel at its core; the blood of Jesus that “cleanseth us from all sin…”. Paul said it most concisely in 1 Corinthians 15, and his evidence is clearly stated in the phrase, “according to the scripture”; meaning that everything about Jesus isn’t just a whim, but it is cemented in scripture from Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 3:15 where God promised the “seed” that would crush the serpent’s head but would only have HIS heel bruised, and His victory revealed from the resurrection through the Revelation—which is all about JESUS.  Genesis is the very first promise of the Messiah who would redeem us from our sin; which is what our faith must be rooted and grounded in.

Presumption, on the other hand, is our telling God what our plan is, making our own way, rather than believing what Jesus said!

“Jesus saith unto him, I am

the way,

the truth, and

the life:

no man cometh unto the Father,

but by me.”  John 14:6

And as we are clearly told in the book of Acts.

“This is the stone

which was set at nought of you builders,

which is become the head of the corner.

12 Neither is there salvation in any other:

for there is none other name

under heaven

given among men,

whereby we must be saved.”   Acts 4:11-12

No other way!  It’s not just saying His name!  It’s not just doing good works!  It’s not about what “I” can do, what I can say, or any religious activity or set of rules or confidence in anything men may tell us to do.  Nor is it simply “saying” the name of Jesus like a magic talisman!  IT IS in the person of the sinless, holy Son of God, Jesus, who was born of a virgin, who lived a sinless life in this human flesh, and who willingly, lovingly gave Himself up as the only perfect sacrifice for sin.  So I must see myself as a sinner and come before a holy God in humble recognition of my sin, repenting of going my own way, and asking for God’s forgiveness that is only available through Jesus’ blood.

“Giving thanks unto the Father,

which hath made us meet to be partakers

of the inheritance of the saints in light:

13 Who hath delivered us

from the power of darkness,

and hath translated us

into the kingdom of his dear Son:

14 In whom we have redemption

through his blood,

even the forgiveness of sins:”                  Colossians 1:12-14

It’s all about Jesus, my friends, not me!  I can’t be good enough to gain heaven apart from repentance of my sin and confidence and faith in the substitutionary, atoning sacrifice of Jesus at Calvary!  (No earthly priesthood could fully atone for sin—for there was never a perfect sacrifice, or one who could live forever or give eternal life—until Jesus Christ The Lord came to be the ultimate sacrifice for all who will come to Him believing in HIS substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for my sin and yours—which Jesus became on the cross, because He loves us!)

“And they truly were many priests,

because they were not suffered to continue

by reason of death:

24 But this man,

because he continueth ever,

hath an unchangeable priesthood.

25 Wherefore he is able also

to save them to the uttermost

that come unto God by him,

seeing he ever liveth

to make intercession for them.”                   Hebrews 7:23-25

He was, is and always will be God, yet He set aside His glory (not forsaking it, but taking on human flesh, He laid aside His glory to go to Calvary for all who will believe!) to walk this earth in, with and for the sake of mankind!  I can’t pay for my own sin apart from hell, but Jesus has paid the price to all who will come to Him, for He is the God-Man Savior!

“Let your conversation

be without covetousness;

and be content

with such things as ye have:

for he hath said,

I will never leave thee,

nor forsake thee.

6 So that we may boldly say,

The Lord is my helper,

and I will not fear

what man shall do unto me.

7 Remember them which have the rule over you,

who have spoken unto you the word of God:

whose faith follow,

considering the end of their conversation.

8 Jesus Christ

the same yesterday,

and to day,

and for ever.”  Hebrews 13:5-8

Who are you following, the feel-good gospel, or the Gospel of the cross of Jesus Christ our Lord?  Have you received the truth as your own, and bowed before King Jesus in repentance and faith?  Or are you going your own way?  Jesus is calling, will you open the door?  Two proclamations of Jesus—the cost and the invitation.

“Then said Jesus unto his disciples,

If any man will come after me,

let him deny himself,

and take up his cross,

and follow me.

25 For whosoever will save his life

shall lose it:

and whosoever will lose his life for my sake

shall find it.

26 For what is a man profited,

if he shall gain the whole world,

and lose his own soul?

or what shall a man give in exchange

for his soul?” Matthew 16:24-26

“Behold,

I stand at the door,

and knock:

if any man hear my voice,

and open the door,

I will come in to him,

and will sup with him,

and he with me.”  Revelation 3:20

Amen and Amen!!!

It’s your choice, but choose wisely, there is a test!

Counterfeit Or Genuine???  A Word from THE WORD!!! #430

There is so much going on around us that claims to be of God, yet how can we know what is genuine—whether in our own lives or the lives of those we encounter (particularly on the media—of any kind).  So how are we to know what’s counterfeit and what’s not?  Simply put, there is only one way and that’s to dig into The Word of God!  First and foremost because it’s what God calls us to do, secondly it is the only way to discern truth from error, and there is a lot of error going around dressed up as ‘truth’!

One of the questions that I want us to consider today, is “If you belong to Jesus, why is your lifestyle denying Him, by denying what His Word says?”  If we have genuinely been born again to new life in Jesus, why are we so often, in essence, slandering The One that we call LORD?

“Study

to shew thyself approved unto God,

a workman

that needeth not to be ashamed,

rightly dividing the word of truth.

16 But shun profane and vain babblings:

for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

17 And their word will eat as doth a canker:

of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;

18 Who concerning the truth have erred,

saying that the resurrection is past

already;

and overthrow the faith of some.

19 Nevertheless the foundation of God

standeth sure,

having this seal,

The Lord knoweth them that are his.

And, Let every one

 that nameth the name of Christ

depart from iniquity.”  2 Timohty 2:15-19

We are called to study—to dig in to God’s Word with diligence—that we might “shew thyself”—to display, live honorably and openly to the world as a true follower of Jesus—not bringing shame upon our Lord.  Are we able to “shew thyself approved unto God”?  Or are we not truly His, but faking it, living a lie, trying to go along to get along!  I pray not!  Whose approval are you seeking?  Does your speech betray Jesus?  Do your morals betray what His Word teaches?  Are your choices based on the worldly rather than the “way, the truth and the life” of Jesus! (See John 14:6).  Who are you following? People say pretty things, they sound good to the ear, but we are to try “the spirits” and not just go along to get along.  Paul warns us of those pretty sounding words.

“Preach the word;

be instant in season,

out of season;

reprove,

rebuke,

exhort

with all longsuffering and doctrine.

3 For the time will come

when they will not endure sound doctrine;

but after their own lusts

shall they heap to themselves teachers,

having itching ears;

4 And they shall turn away their ears

from the truth,

and shall be turned unto fables.”  2 Timohty 4:2-4

I truly believe that what Paul warns us of is surely upon us.  Check out this list.

“This know also,

that in the last days perilous times

shall come.

2 For men shall be

lovers of their own selves,

covetous,

boasters,

proud,

blasphemers,

disobedient to parents,

unthankful,

unholy,

3 Without natural affection,

trucebreakers,

false accusers,

incontinent,

fierce,

despisers of those that are good,

4 Traitors,

heady,

highminded,

lovers of pleasures

more than lovers of God;

5 Having a form of godliness,

but denying the power thereof:

from such turn away.”  2 Timothy 3:1-5

In Blanche’s paraphrase, men will adorn themselves with religion without any relationship to Jesus!  They’ll use His name and claim His power but is will simply be a “form” not reality—biblical reality!  As we noted above in 2 Timohty 2:19, God knows His own, and while you can fool some of the people all of the time, and you can fool all of the people some of the time—you can’t fool GOD.  Jesus had something pretty severe to say to this, let’s look.

“Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

21 Not every one that saith unto me,

Lord, Lord,

shall enter into the kingdom of heaven;

but he that doeth

the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me in that day,

Lord, Lord,

have we not prophesied in thy name?

and in thy name have cast out devils?

and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23 And then will I profess unto them,

I never knew you:

depart from me,

ye that work iniquity.”  Matthew 7:20-23

God knows!  And the day will reveal it—sometimes before then, the truth will be revealed!  God’s timing is always perfect!  And in a closing passage, one that is not very popular today, but it’s God’s Word and we need to know that truth is still truth whether people receive and believe it or not!  But let me preface this passage by saying that the key is Paul’s declaration of his confidence in the Corinthian believers, who “were” once participating in these behaviors, but he makes it clear that when Jesus saves us, there is a change!

“Know ye not

that the unrighteous

shall not inherit the kingdom of God?

Be not deceived:

neither fornicators, nor idolaters,

nor adulterers, nor effeminate,

nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

10 Nor thieves, nor covetous,

nor drunkards, nor revilers,

nor extortioners,

shall inherit the kingdom of God.

11 And such were some of you:

but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified,

but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus,

and by the Spirit of our God.”  1 Corinthians 6:9-11

Some of the greatest words in all of scripture, “such were some of you: but…”!!!!  Amen and thank you Jesus—such was I–but I have been saved, born again by the Spirit of God; I’ve been washed, sanctified, and justified by the work of Jesus!  His substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for my sin!!!

How about you?  I pray that you will come to Jesus if you haven’t, and if you have been born again by the power of the blood, that you will make this a year of new beginnings in your devotion to our Lord and Savior—Master of all creation, including me!  Praise His holy name and thank you Jesus for saving me.  Look to the cross my friend, HE went there for you too!!!

“For God so loved the world,

that he gave his only begotten Son,

that whosoever believeth in him

should not perish,

but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not his Son

into the world to condemn the world;

but that the world through him

might be saved.

18 He that believeth on him

is not condemned:

but he that believeth not

is condemned already,

because he hath not believed

in the name of the only begotten

Son of God.”  John 3:16-18

Christmas Fortnight Day 7  A Word from THE WORD! #419

As we continue looking at Jesus and His birth, let’s think about the ‘manger’.  A cattle trough, a feeding container for cattle, horses and other livestock.  What is the import of the “manger”?

Luke speaks of the manger 3 times. Why 3 times? Let’s look.

“And she brought forth her firstborn son,

and wrapped him in swaddling clothes,

and laid him in a manger;

because there was no room

for them

in the inn.”  Luke 2:7

Luke goes on with even more insight for us, as he recounts the testimony of the shepherds.

 “And this shall be a sign unto you;

Ye shall find the babe

wrapped in swaddling clothes,

lying in a manger.”  Luke 2:12

“And they came with haste,

and found Mary, and Joseph,

and the babe

lying in a manger.” Luke 2:16

First, we see that Mary, “laid him in a manger”.  This precious young mother, chosen by God, had nowhere to lay her newborn baby but in a trough.  Her humility and faithfulness are overwhelming to me.  Nothing is recorded of Mary complaining, whining or being dissatisfied with her lot.

Philippians 2 says that Jesus also chose to humble himself, how about you and me?

“And being found in fashion as a man,

he humbled himself, and

became obedient unto death,

even the death of the cross.”  Philippians 2:8

This King of kings accepted a manger for HIS bed.  What about us—what are we unwilling to accept from God’s hand?

Then we see the angels, giving the shepherds instructions to look for a babe ‘lying in a manger’.  Christ’s first ‘cradle’ wasn’t a surprise to God.  He KNOWS where You are as well.

Lastly, we see that the shepherds found Him in that very ‘manger’.  They didn’t scoff at this strange tale, nor hesitate to obey.  How about you and me?  Do we respond to God in similar manner? Or do we hesitate at what may seem to us the “strange ways” of God?

Remember His ways aren’t our ways, nor are our ways His.  Thoughts to ponder in this Christmas season.  Think about ‘CHRIST’mas, and let’s make sure our focus is on Jesus The Christ, not just the trappings of this ‘holiday’ –let’s keep it a Holy Day!!!

The Quiet In The Noise??? A Word from THE WORD!!! #408

Just a few things today about beating the nosiness around us.  There is so much on every hand harping, crying out, shouting the good—the bad—and especially the ugly!  But we have an option, and I encourage you to call on Him today, His name is Jesus. And as we prepare to celebrate His birth, may we draw nearer to Him, as He takes hold on our hand and we can cling to Him with all our heart.  I simply want to share a few passages to encourage your heart today.  Blessings of peace and quiet on you and yours—

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace,

whose mind is stayed on thee:

because he trusteth in thee.

4 Trust ye in the LORD for ever:

for in the LORD JEHOVAH

is everlasting strength:” Isaiah 26: 3-4

And in Jesus own words to us!

“Let not your heart be troubled:

ye believe in God, believe also in me.

2 In my Father’s house are many mansions:

if it were not so, I would have told you.

I go to prepare a place for you.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you,

I will come again,

and receive you unto myself;

that where I am,

there ye may be also.

4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

5 Thomas saith unto him,

Lord, we know not whither thou goest;

and how can we know the way?

6 Jesus saith unto him,

I am

the way,

the truth, and

the life:

no man cometh unto the Father,

but by me.”  John 14:1-6

Amidst all the clutter and clamor going on around us, in our homes, on the job, on the street, on social media of every sort—seemingly everywhere—we have a God, a Savior and Lord who can and will give us peace in the midst of any storm, any clatter, any fear, any trial or difficulty that seems to overwhelm us, Jesus is near at hand if we will but reach out in faith and obedience!  Won’t you reach out and take His hand and let Him lead you into that “perfect peace”?  He is faithful—He is the way to the Father—the way to heaven and eternal life!

Oh, what joy, peace and “quiet” we often miss simply because we fail to realize and trust to the care of our Lord and Savior, Jesus!  A passage that is very special to us, may you find the stillness of Jesus who has you in His hand if you have been born again (and if you haven’t been, you can be by calling on Jesus in repentance of your sin and faith in His substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for your sin and mine! See John 3)!

“Be still, and know that I am God:

I will be exalted among the heathen,

I will be exalted in the earth.

11 The LORD of hosts is with us;

the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Selah.”  Psalm 46:10-11

 We can keep on going in His “perfect peace”!  Don’t let the clamor stop your peace.  Jesus arose victorious, and we can live in the victory!

“But thanks be to God,

which giveth us the victory

through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58 Therefore, my beloved brethren,

be ye stedfast,

unmoveable,

always abounding in the work of the Lord,

forasmuch as ye know

that your labour is not in vain

in the Lord.”  1 Corinthians 15:57-58

Rejoice–The Lord Blesses??? A Word from THE WORD!!! #405

Just a brief word this morning to encourage our hearts.  While the world goes crazy around us, remember that our God still reigns, and when we are born again by the blood of The Lamb, we will reign with Him!  We win!  Yet we don’t have to wait until eternity, we can praise and rejoice in His blessings every day—today—and today—and today—and all of our todays here on this earth!

“Bless the LORD,

O my soul:

and all that is within me,

bless his holy name.

2 Bless the LORD,

O my soul,

and forget not all his benefits:

3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities;

who healeth all thy diseases;

4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction;

who crowneth thee with

lovingkindness and tender mercies;

5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things;

so that thy youth is renewed

like the eagle’s…

… 10 He hath not dealt with us

after our sins;

nor rewarded us

according to our iniquities.

11 For as the heaven is high above the earth,

so great is his mercy

toward them that fear him.

12 As far as the east is from the west,

so far hath he removed our transgressions

from us.

13 Like as a father pitieth his children,

so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.

14 For he knoweth our frame;

he remembereth that we are dust.”  Portions of Psalm 103:1-14

May we spend time today rehearsing the goodness of our God!  We are so blessed, and I encourage you to list the blessings of God to you even today!  The list is endless, but we so often let the trials of this life distract us from the goodness of our God!  First and foremost for all who will come to Him is Jesus Christ our Lord!  I am so grateful that He saved me from my sin and made me a new creation in Himself!  I praise Him for the joys of loving and serving Him.  I invite you to come to Him in repentance of your sin and trust in His substitutionary, atoning sacrifice for your sin and mine at Calvary!  But praise God from whom all blessings flow, Jesus didn’t stay in that tomb, but it is empty!  If you hear the tug of Jesus at your heart’s door, I pray that you’ll bow before Him and call on Him and He will answer.  I’m praying for you!

“Behold,
